Free Internet for PN 820?

I've browsed through this site regarding PN820 info, but couldn't find any info about this. I'd really like a smartphone to stay more organized. I also need to check email several times throughout the day, but I don't have the money for a data plan. I have a LG VX8100 right now and pay $5/month for Mobile Web. Is there any cheap alternative to the $25 data plans for checking email (ie hacks or whatever)? Do I need to buy a regular mobile web capable phone for cheap internet? Thanks in advance!

thanks, boyo. the website (FAQ section) seems to say that that service won't work on PDAs though (PN 820 is a PDA I think)..

You're a little SOL man. Verizon's data plans are a rip off. You can get unlimited data use for 44.95 a month or the 10 (or was it 20mb) package for 25.99$.

I'm not sure the pantech can do this, but QNC i believe still works. I'm not exactly sure how it works, but if you do a bit of a search you can get the AT commands that will properly complete the connection. QNC will use your airtime minutes and not bill you for KB.

thanks! is this what you're talking about? It says that "
This will allow you to connect to the Net without a ISP.
You will be using Verizon's."

so this will only charge minutes, but not data for the pn 820 smartphone?

OK, so after receiving a $227 data usage bill for this phone from Verizon for just using ActiveSync with my laptop, I tried to use the above link to set up the phone. It seems that you cannot create a custom connection after going into Settings --> Connections. It lists 8 types of connections, gives you a Menu button that when pressed goes into Advanced and that's it!

Has anyone had any luck with using this phone with minutes instead of data usage?

It's really wrong how Verizon labels "internet usage" on Smartphones. It seems that any transfer into or out of the phone costs money. How is that internet usage when I'm connected to my laptop and NOT using internet explorer or accessing the web? It's not using their wireless network to transfer data or even accessing it. I'm just using it like a pocket PC. If I can't get this phone to work like I think it should, I'll return it and buy a PocketPC!

Next contract rollover I'm switching out of Verizon!

Yeah I use Quick2Net on my Samsung i730. However, I don't think it works on smartphones. Sorry.

You can try but I've tried before using an 820 and Q in the Verizon store and it didn't work.

Found out that it was NOT activesync that caused my problem. Apparently I used AvantGo and it uses data transfer! So any time you get those double arrows you're in data transfer mode and Verizon bills you. I didn't think that AvantGo would do this, but apparently it does!!!! Dummy me. I should have noticed the arrows on the top of the screen!! Well, AvantGo is now uninstalled.

Verizon did refund the $227 if I paid the 44.95 for the month. Not a bad deal, but I wish I knew I was doing this so I could have used all the features on the phone this month!

This is the second time I've done something like this with a new phone. I guess I just never learn my lesson!

Not on an 820 but on a SCH-i600.

From what I gather, the only data options on a PDA phone are pay-as-you-go (expensive if you use much at all) and $45 "unlimited". Mobile Web is not longer an option even on feature phones I don't think; the cheapest you will get is the $15 VCast/mobile TV or whatever.

I got the data plan, partially rationalizing it by loading some apps on the phone that use the Internet (e.g., Google Maps). What rather torqued me though is that they want an additional $10-$15 a month to tether with a laptop, something I will use maybe 3 or 4 times a year but have really come to appreciate having when I do need it. With my old LG I was able to do that for minutes and $5 a month Mobile Web. I finally did find a way to do it with my PN-820, but it is still costing me the $45 a month. No minutes though.

I never used QNC or any of the 3rd-party-ISP methods, so I can't comment on those.

How did you get the phone to tether without paying the extra money? I have one being shipped to me now and used to use my E815 and hacked it so it would allow BT Express network.

At first I used some software called USB Modem to do it. Then I found out that since it is still a Qualcomm chipset, you can use QPST to change the DUN number -- instructions for doing this are in the LG forums (look for VX8100 DUN or something similar) or maybe Motorola too.

There's also some software called PDANet that does it over your ActiveSync connection, but I run a variety of OSes on my machine and wanted it to look like a plain serial modem.
