I just got a PPC 6700 today, and I have some questions.

I'm kind of new at this Pocket PC stuff, but I like what I have encountered so far. My computer savvy is a little rusty anymore, but I should be able to follow any instructions you can offer.

I want to use the Gmail for Mobile application that's out, and I'm having a hell of a time finding a Java runtime for Windows Mobile. The best thing I have found was from here . I haven't tried it out yet, but I'm hopeful that things will work out with it.

My first question is: How do I get rid of the pre-installed software (Audible, GetGood, etc)? I tried the "Remove programs" thing in WM, but it's not on the list.

Second: Is there a way to disable the "Sprint Vision" connection? I am happy using the WiFi built into the device, and I don't want to get charged out the wazoo for using sprint vision without paying the $15 a month for it.

Third: How can I make it so when I close a program it lets go of the memory it is using? I would rather not have to do this manually all the time.

Fourth: Can I download ringtones on my PC and upload them with ActiveSync? What file to I put them in to make them accessible?

Thanks a lot guys!

Ok, so I have the Gmail app working... sort of. I can get it to operate, and it works quite nicely, but only in the runtime emulator... I can't figure out how to make it operate in the regular environment.

I would really appreciate some help with this.

Just delete your Sprint network settings.

Install a task manager with true "X" close capability. I recommend vBar: http://www.vieka.com/vbar.htm

Windows Mobile can use MP3s, WMAs and WAVs and ringtones. Just download the file (or rip it off a CD), transfer it to your My Documents folder on your device using ActiveSync and select it in the settings options. (Let us know if you need more detailed help).

Hope this helps, and congrats on the new phone!

How did you get the GMAIL to work on your ppc? I couldnt get mine's working.. im on the Wing.

You should try ppcgeeks.com. They have a pretty strong forum dedicated specifically to the 6700's including custom ROM's which may or may not fix some of the stuff that you come across.

What do you mean regular environment? You mean in your unit? Or the PC emulator?

If you are referring to your unit, that is as good as it gets. J2ME does not run native on PPC. Same with all other Smartphones. The only reason you don't see this in say a Symbian device is because Java is incorporated in the OS so it gives the impression of running Native. On WM it is not.

As far as getting Gmail to work, that Java program I linked contains an emulator, basically a program that says "See, I can run Java, really". In the emulator, I can get the gmail app to work, but it's about 5 extra steps that I would rather not bother with.

I ended up just setting up the built-in Outlook client to check my Gmail. Not as nice, but it's better than pulling teeth.

Go to Settings --> System -->Task Manager --> Button --> End programs by tapping "X".

This way when you tap "X" it actually closes the program instead of running it in the background.

I don't have an icon for "Task Manager" on the system tab.

I ended up getting Total Commander to get rid of the programs I didn't want. The registry entries are probably still there but the software is gone, and that's really what I was after.

I am trying out the Magic Button application for the X-to-close functionality. It seems ok, but I really wish Windows had options for this out of the box.

I'm looking for a video game emulator, too. I'm going to be travelling a lot and the main reason I got a new phone is to be connected and to have something to do while travelling.

SmartGear looks like a decent product, but the website doesn't really say what consoles it covers... Anyone have any information on this??

Thanks guys!

You don't need the java app (it sucks anyway) you can set up Pocket Outlook, or any other email program, to work with gmail.

WM6 does have close functionality.

You may want to shorten your songs too (the mda faq over in the windows mobile subforum in the t-mo forum has good instructions). And there are a bunch of places you can store your ringtones, some of them even let you use the songs for notifications (sms received, mms received, email, voice mail, etc.).

This phone uses WM5.0. Is there a way to upgrade it to WM6?

HOW???? Please share! I've been going insane because i cant get it to work with out look in the sense that as soon as i my gmail receives an email, i get it on my ppc too. however i have been able to do it the "other e-mail" method.. but that doesnt automatically update my inbox.. i have to tell it to receive everytime i want to check it and it becomes a pain.

i have the tmobile wing but i assume that doesnt make a difference since its the same os right?

PLEASE SHARE!

I don't know if an update is available for that phone, you should check with the carrier (for an official update) and if they don't have one you could check over at xda and see if any have been released by individuals.

You want push email. I don't believe you can get that with gmail, the best you can do is have it check for new email at a very short interval. But I could be wrong, I never looked into push mail because it requires the $30 total internet plan. I also have no use for instant email, I don't get anything that can't wait a couple of hours for me to check it.

You could have gotten the PPC-6800 for the same price and it has WM6.

Something tells me it would be pretty hard to get a 6800 for $200. If I was a new customer, I could get one for $250, or if I wanted to renew my contract for two years, I could get it for maybe $400.

From what I've been told, Push Mail doesn't work on this phone at all. One of my friends really wanted that feature, and he ended up going with a Crackberry. I just want access to it while I'm out and about, I don't need immediate notification so I'm happy with what I have right now.

If it has a data option, check out Mail2web.com

I use it, with the $2 a month service and have close as you can get to push mail without downloading, installing and running telus's business inbox.

The $2 allows me alias mailbox and mail agregration fromother mail accounts.

Works pretty sweet, check your options to remove spam an away you go.

Peace
