HTC S730 Information or release date?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: sdbe

I hear a lot about the Kaiser, also one of my options, but I don't see anything about the S730. PDAdb.net says it is to be released in September 2007 (http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=728) and elite-electronix says August 2007, but I can't find anything to confirm it.

Does anyone have any more recent information?

Thanks

Words can't describe how badly I want this phone. I found one online store with an August 17th in stock date.

I'm seeing some conflicting info for the S730. PDAdb has a different photo (and I hope to you-know-who that it doesn't wind up with that white case as shown on Negri...

I called Addicted to Phones and he called his people (I got my S710 from them). They don't have anything more firm than August/September. I hope to have one in-hand before mid-Sept, as I'm going to NJ for a wedding and would like to have the GPS capability as well as the HSPDA.

I should add that considering my Dopod C730 works in the HSPDA mode here in Orlando, there should be no problems with the S730.

yeah negri says
"This product will be in stock on Friday 17 August, 2007."

I'm deliberating between getting the HTC s630 now, as it just came out though the dopod c730 version was out for some time already, the htc version is a little more compatible for us market and will require less customization/tweaks.

so im between getting s630 now or waiting for the s730.

i love the slide out keyboards of other htc ppc phones but wonder for a smartphone if the exposed keyboard is better for one hadned use and since i'm used to those from a moto Q and blackjack

the s730 could be best of both worlds though being a smartphone and having slide out keyboard but then i will just wish it has a touch screen.

i like having both a slim smartphone and a ppc but while this may make me not need the ppc with touch screen and slide out keyboard as the s730 has one of the 2, i cant see needing both s630 and s730 so i relaly have to decide.

can't we get a comparo of the 2 anywehre?

Posted by: Quatre

s730 and s630 have same screen size and res. so no difference there.

while s630 are:
(width x height x depth):
2.5 x 4.4 x 0.5

s730 dimensions are
(width x height x depth):
2 x 3.9 x 0.7 inches

crazy so the 730 is pretty thin and only .2 thicker then the s630 and is actually less wide (though non surprise there as the excalibur/cavalier has to accomodate the full qwerty on its front and are slight wider then the blackjack of sam form factor)

but surprisingly the s630 is taller (height) then the s730? i would think the s730 would be taller then the s630 being that it has to accomodate the # pad on the front and the slide out keyboard lenthwise adding to the height.

looking at dimensions i'd have to go with the s730 myself. ugh but i dont think i can deal with the blackjack till then.

This product will be in stock on Wednesday 15 August, 2007.

2 days earlier and cheaper then negrielectronics.com

since i had to give up my white cdma krzr for now so as to use the LG vx9400 tv phone that I got for free to review the tv service for a paid market research study, I now have 2 black phones as the ones I use at same time in the blackjack and lg vx9400 so I really want the white HTC S730 Wings.... among other reasons so i can go back to my black and white combo.

wish it hadn't got delayed till August.

so sick of my blackjack and how it misses typed keys that I may just get the htc s630 cavalier for now and get the s730 later when it comes out.

i like the white much better then that ugly dark color shown on pdadb.net. Everywhere else shows the white color so that is probably what it will be from htc.

the dark might be the dopod or other manufac. version.

Posted by: sdbe

There seems to be some confusion as to the specs for the S730. pdadb says that it will use the 384 mhz Qualcomm cpu and they show the dark phone in the picture. The other sites mentioned both show a white phone and state that it will use the 400 mhz Samsung. My guess is that it will be the Qualcomm (and I am hoping for the dark color personally) but isn't that still involved in the lawsuite with Broadcom?

Stylish PC says that it will support HSUPA while pdadb doesn't.

I guess we will have to just wait and see.

Love these size-easy's

If you don't like Negrielectronics the just ignore him. Thee are tons of places to purchase phones if you don't want to go though him.

Just to name a few....

Smart Mobile Gadgets
Mad Monkey Boy
E Gadget Depot
CTI NYC / CTI Miami
Superior Gadgets

I bought my Trinity through E Gadget Depot and my Touch through CTI NYC, both gave me excellent service.

This back and forth BS just craps the thread.....

Posted by: Quatre

also don't forget stylishpc.com, welectronics.com, and phonesource-usa.com that all have the s630 in stock (the latter being the lowest priced) and are therefore likely to have the s730 upon release if you want to contact them to notify you when they have them in.

Thin? You gotta be kidding me! When you have the actual device in the hand you'll be amazed how freakin thick it is.

It uses the same cpu like the Kaiser, the Qualcomm 7200.

The White doesn't look so hot... I'm wondering if it's White for the Wings and Black for the Volans models....

Posted by: Negrielectronics

Look at the difference in thickness. It doesnt seem like a lot, but 7mm is enough when you are dealing with 12-19, its over 58% thicker than the s620. It will be a bout the same thickness as the s710, which makes up for its thickness in overall height.

http://www.sizeasy.com/page/size_co...620-vs-HTC-s730

Posted by: rkdiddy

I don't think I would put a whole lot of stock in a company showing a release date in a day or so that is still showing a picture of the white s730 without a D-Pad.

Just my $.02.

Posted by: Quatre

i like the white but noone knows what it will be until its released. I like the theory of the 2 diff names and 2 diff colors. I've contacted some companies set to sell it and they just put an estimated release date but said they still have to hear from htc on it, so yeah its prob not coming out tomorrow.

also, what dpad is supposed to be on the s730? do you have a pic of the non white s730 with a dpad?

Hmm...estimated dates...so why they post the dates when they don't even know the dates? That's not a very responsible business act.

http://www.pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=728

There, the pic of the non white s730 with a dpad. The actual unit doesn't look all that good to me though.

Posted by: Quatre

thanks, yeah i dont like the looks of it either but the dpad and extra buttons on the front would be handy. i'm just disappointed that this device is fairly thick when compared to say a moto Q or samsung blackjack and even teh htc s630 which i think is as thin as the Q and bj as well.

i guess its tough to make it have a slide out keyboard and be thin.

It's a simple formula...

Screen size is X by Y

Keyboard is X by Y

Standard thickness of each is Z

You either have a phone that is Y by 2X by Z -- OR -- X by Y by 2Z

Personally, I much prefer the shape of the S710/S730 (as well as 2125 and SMT5600) over that of the C730/S630/Treo 750/et. al. I don't use the keyboard that often, and I much prefer the option to use the dial pad and xT9 - and especially for dialing. Most mobile sites also have a provision for dial pad navigation, where I can make a single entry with a number and go to a specific link rather than use the D pad to navigate to the link, then select it. Some of these are accessible with the QWERTY style pads (most work on my C730), but the num pad portion of the keyboard isn't easy to find by feel with all those other keys around. They attempted to help this on the BlackJack, but it just doesn't work for me, and dialing is somewhat of a nuisance. At least the 5 on the num pad on the C730 is mapped to the F key where the home key bumps are for the alpha pad. Some num pads aren't mapped that way.

To give a little perspective on the size issue, when comparing my 2125 with my S710, the 2125 seems larger. The two are the same thickness, other than a small portion of the S710 where it gets marginally thicker, and almost the same width (the S710 is easier to hold, being marginally wider), but the 2125 is an appreciable amount taller than the S710.

.

Posted by: rkdiddy

For some reason I couldn't open Holishi's link...so I'm not sure if this is the same pic. I'm guessing the actual phone will look more like the below (with a d-pad). When the CDMA version was officially announced the prelim pictures didn't have a d-pad either. Now it does.

It wasn't directed at your company.

It was a blanket statement that emcompasses any company that is giving false information to make a quick sale or a pre-order. As you know being in the business the release dates are a moving target.

Trust me, I would love to get this device, so I'm hoping someone proves me wrong and the phone is released in the next few days. Just seems a little early since we haven't even seen any test units surfacing.

Here is a picture of the vox variant coming to Verizon - notice the d-pad. This photo looks very similar to the black one I just posted.

Posted by: Quatre

ugh, vzw better not get this before we can even import one on gsm.

Posted by: MalPraktiz

what idiot at Verizon photoshopped WM 5 Pocket PC into the device? It's even on the screen shot of the slide shown at BGR

Posted by: rkdiddy

^ Yeah I thought the same thing. Pretty cheesy.

It is looking like Verizon will get it in October.

Verizon for as much as I dislike them, is releasing a killer line-up in the next 60 days.

Smt5600 (pic above), i760 and q9m.

Hopefully HTC will pull through on some new devices, my blackjack is almost a year old!

Posted by: Quatre

when is s730 coming out for us. what happen to wed aug 15, .
.my bj is almost a year old also, heh.
i may just have to get a s630 for now then. at least its thinner then s730.

Posted by: EricMcIntire

Friday... October 12th as of right now.
http://www.negrielectronics.com/pro...products_id=106

Posted by: MalPraktiz

you can't trust anything most sites say about release dates, dates are moving targets and sites like that one just repeat whatever rumors they hear or read

Posted by: So-What

why even bother with dates, I hate when they list false dates, I rather not even have a date.

Posted by: Holishi

listing dates is fine, as long as it's confirmed and certain. Estimated dates are absolutely pointless.

We have had a problem with NOT listing dates on our site. As people purchase the item and think they are in stock. The S730 date is an estimate, yes. We are changing the wording of the site to state that. This is the best information we have to date, directly from our contact at HTC.

Again i apologize if you feel mis-lead, but understand that is not our purpose. We like to keep people as informed as possible.

I heard that Vz will be going with WM5 on it, and will be very restricted in features.

Posted by: Quatre

any update on the gsm/hsdpa/umts HTC s730 release date? Is this thread going to be about the verizon version too? I say it shouldn't be too much other then to mention the progress or release for that cdma/evdo version of the device.

Posted by: Beretta1526

There are supposedly a couple new phones being debuted at a show next Saturday, although debuts at shows don't necessarily mean availability will soon follow. At my last check, week of 9/10 is likely.

Posted by: Quatre

Sept. 10th for the s730? crap maybe i should cancel my s630 order and just wait till then. I'm just worried about it being thicker then the s630 and there not being a holster.

Posted by: Quatre

actually i found out thats the date for the tytn 2 and there is nothing solid for the s730 so i dont think 9/10 is happening for th s730

Posted by: Quatre

any news on the release date?

one merchant i know says Oct. 12. another says "soon" which could mean anything.

sucks waiting. verizon keeps getting new phones including smart phones and ppc and att has nothing since the blackjack

my blackjack is worn and the keyboard has always sucked.

wnated to get an s630 but they were stuck in customs for most merchants and even the merchant in canada doesn't have any. figured i'd just wait for the s730 now but who knows how long it will be delayed.

i dont know why its so annoyingly hard to get a decent smartphone with wifi and 3g quad band for ATT in the US.

Posted by: ARHYTHMATIK

Seriously huh-- why can't someone make a dang smartphone with wifi, 3G, and a scroll wheel? Is it really that hard to do? Hopefully the S730 will come in and save the day for us.

You should buy one of the Dopod C730's that are confirmed to not have the text input issue. The one I have has been top notch.

Middle/End of November release for the s730.

The TYTN 2 has all that, plus GPS. But you want something smaller?

Posted by: Quatre

yes we want something smaller and slimmer. i have a tytn, its great and all but i never took it anywhere with me really cus its too big.

when is the tytn2/kaiser due out anyway, now that the s730 is delayed to the middle/end of Nov. some might not wait for the s730 i the tytn2 comes out sooner and has everything the s730 has and more despite being a little bulkier.

TYTN 2 has been out for about a month now. The AT&T Tilt we will have by the end of next week. (better price)

Posted by: Beretta1526

I've heard from my phone supplier that the S730 is expected in-hand mid-November.

Posted by: Quatre

sucks s730 is delayed. i dont know what to get. if ATT has the tytn2 in the form of the Tilt, i could just get that from them then cheaper prob even if i'm not due for an upgrade.

as usual it seems verizon gets more phones faster then att and to the point where even the import comes out after vzw gets their cdma version of it.

i think verizon is getting a cdma vesion of the s730 if they dont already have it and it will prob be out before we can even import a gsm one plus for att in teh us, we dont have much of a choice anymore with imports being it has to be quad band so that limits the options.

I saw about some Nokia iphone looking phone and its going to have video content available directly through nokia so no going through your provider or antying like that.

id like to find out more about that but itsprob a long way off as everything.

i need a new smart or ppc phone asap and cant seem to find one that is worth getting. waiting for the s730 sucks.

s630 isn't worth it now for multiple reasons. its tough too cus i want something slim like the moto Q or the blackjack but that limits you to smartphones cus no ppc yet really is thin.

not sure what to get or whats worth waiting for and dont have time to look into it so much. s730 seemed good combinging the slide out type keyboard of the tytn type devices (though its prob not as large as that) with a good phoen form factor for phone use and then wide screen with keyboard for email and web browsing.

only thing i was concerned is its not going to be as thin as the s630 but the form factor of it is worth it.

been waiting months so not sure i can wait till then and woldn't be surprised if their is more delays. ugh

Posted by: Beretta1526

My local AT&T got 5 tilts in yesterday. I didn't check with them to find out if they sold out, but I was getting the impression that four were sold even before they were there.

That being said, I'm still quite happy with my Dopod C730. I still (knock wood) don't have any text input issues. I'm sorta wondering if the HTC S730 will be something to "wait and see" about anyway. What if it also has the text input issues? I'm hoping not, obviously, because the S710 is by far and above the best form factor for a handheld yet. The addition of the faster processor and 3G will be a welcomed addition.

My biggest concern with the S730 is battery life. My S710 is pretty doggone good. It appears that the S730 is using the same battery. Oddly enough, HTC's published spec's show 210 min of talk time on UTMS as opposed to 175 with the S710. Knowing how much time I spend using data, I have a feeling that my S730 would be getting a daily recharge or a spare battery.

I've been toying with the idea of selling my C730 since I don't use it too often (only due to form factor). I just don't want to sell a device that works very well, only to be buying one later that doesn't work well. What a conundrum...

Well, hopefully they did a bit of redesigning in terms of power management to make that 35 minutes of talk time different. The S730 looks pretty spiffy and definitely has my interest. Only thing I'm worried about is the price tag.

Oh yeah, that too <sick feeling coming over me>

Posted by: Quatre

the price couldn't be that high for the s730 especially not once its out anymore. nothing about it should make it anymore expensive then the s630 and it should sell for less then the att tilt/ tytn2

other then the fact that the att version is cheaper cus its not an import and thats where the s630 and waiting for the s730 aren't seeming worth it anymore when the tilt is basically a more full featured and better phone being a full ppc phone then the other 2 whic are smart phones and can be had for less.

Posted by: Quatre

its finally available but i'm prob not getting, least not for awhile as i have an htc kaiser and s630 cavalier.
