Curve and 3G / EDGE on AT&T

First post here, and yes i did search.

I am VERY interested in getting a curve. I want a blackberry or smartphone perferrably with a qwerty keyboard, push email capability, and a camera.

I am concerned about the cons

PC Mag

and

CNET

no 3g support? how much will this hinder web browsing? I do not know very much about 3g vs EDGE, but i believe 3g is superior. By what margin?

Are there any other BB I should consider first? I would really like the camera though for those random moments you just don't have a separate camera with you.

Great phone. EDGE is fine. You won't regret.

It's pretty moot on current BB's despite all the gripes about the lack of 3G. The rendering of pages on the BB is the real bottleneck if you read any threads comparing the performance of EDGE BB's versus EVDO BB's. Tethering, of course, is a different story.

To pick your model, pick your carrier based on coverage first. Determine if you have a preference for SureType or not. After that, it's mostly your preference for features specific to the model you're looking at. The core fucntionality of BB's is pretty much the same.

3G is significantly faster. But 3G sucks batteries dry. If you can find any 3G pda or smartphone that doesn't require constant battery charging, go for it. It is a major trade-off.

I've had a curve about three weeks, love it. EDGE is slower than HSDPA, clearly - I use a Moto Razr V3xx for when I want to tether my laptop. But for the type of browsing that you do on the small screen (checking news, flight times, etc) EDGE is fine.

The other advantage is that the unlimted data plans seem cheaper for blackberry than for say the Treo. I care a lot about international, and there are no unlimited data plans for devices other than blackberry.

And 3G does burn up the battery. Battery life for data on my Razr is noticeably less than when just talking. I had a Treo 750 for three days, battery life was horrific.
