Anyone else hate the voicemail that come with Carriers?

Can't stand Verizon's interminably long voicemail system that keeps asking you to press keys. aaarghhhhhh.

anyone else?

haha agree. but i'v had cingular too and it's still pretty dumb. for some reason they stopped having the voicemail keep track of day/time... pissed me off

yeah. looking into some of the free services that replace your cell phone. i read a great review about one, youmail on gizmodo. worth a try.

Voicemail update:
Impressions on Youmail voicemail.

So i signed up for the free youmail service over the week-end to test it against the no-frills system that comes standard with my carrier (cingular). here are my first impressions:
Youmail was very easy to set up. enter my cell number, enter the code they texted me, entered a 9 digit-ish code to set up the call forwarding and i was off. i'll say it took 90 seconds or so. pretty good so far.

i logged in to my online account. user name was my cell number--no problemo.
And then---pure nirvana!

i had checked out some of the free voicemail gretings youmail had on their site and i started creating contacts and assigning pre-recorded gretings to different people.
my laptop has a mic (most do) so i recorded a bunch of greetings for my mom, my bro, nad a few buddies.

here's the cool thing. you can enter #'s directly into your phone and create greetings for callers from scratch OR if someone calls you and leaves you a voicemail the system prompts you to create a personal greeting by hitting 2 keys. nice!

ok, so they have this thing called Ditchmail. in a nutshell, you create a contact online and click a button and the next tiem that person calls they get a "stop calling" type of message and the phone hangs up on them. i picked this cool "this number is no longer in service". no muss, no more fuss. lol.
I also used ditchmail to create an announce-only greeting for someone that i knew was going to call early sunday morning. that way, he only got that message and no one else.
btw: you can set up a ditch on the phone after you listen to some annoying person leaving you one more stupid message.

so, first impressions:

like:
love youmail. easy to set up. seamlessly works with my phone.

dislike:
none so far.

i'll write up a follow-up later on in the week.

btw: i checked out gotvoice, callwave and grandcentral. the only one that looked remotely interest. was GC but i didn't like the fact that i had to give you a new number.

i checked up on youmail, looks cool but is it free or "free"? cus i've got screwed by "free" ringtones before and i don't want that to happen again...

Youmail is totally free. i think they're making their money on banner ads, just like yahoo does on their free email.
They also have tons of cool voicemail greetings you can use as your own. they have serious professional voicemail recordings and fun greetings.
I'm liking their service more and more. I used it this weekend by forwarding directions to a party to a bunch of people. Instead of calling 10 friends to give them directions i just shared the voicemail via email.
check out this bart simpson one:

I'm likin this youmail business, the ditchmail feature is hilarious. I think I'll rock the bart simpson greeting in honor of this friday.

I wish T Mo would tell me what number left me the msg

Posted by: Quickdrawin

Even though I've only had it a week or so I'm gonna say try out youmail, it's definitely solid and easy to set up and it will tell you wut number and who (if u have the number stored) called and left a message

I have Verizon and I can't seem to set youmail up. I follow the instructions. Verizon says the number can't be completed as dialed. I complete instructions anyway, but it doesn't work. Any suggestions?

quick question if I use this will I still have a voicemail icon on my phone or how will I be notified of new voicemails?

Posted by: bigb252

I don't think you will get the voicemail icon on your phone (I'm not sure) but you can choose to have them notify you by text message or e-mail. You can check accidentally deleted voicemails online too, a very neat feature.

I have my emails hooked up to my text messages also, so I actually get to notifications

Posted by: Quickdrawin

you don't get the little voicemail icon but u can have it send u texts which for me anyways work better. I really hate that little icon thing anyways, it never really works the way u want it to. Youmail is sic tho...

I now have it working and love it. Thanks, for the find it's great.
