Or you could have gone Toshiba. To be honest maybe it's because I learned to text in Japan first that I never understood why people can't live without T9 or similar text input system.

Ya... once you use T9 you generally don't look back. It makes typing HEAPS faster. The only thing most people hate about it is when it doesn't understand the word you're typing and you have to register it in the custom dictionary. Some people can't be bothered doing this

they have their own "T9" for japanese though - just use that! why else use the japanese fw?

Japanese NEEDS a predictive text system to convert from Hiragana to Kanji. Without one you can't type Japanese properly. The ones that come with phones nowadays are pretty good at figuring out the words you're typing just from a few letters, and many remember the words you pick so as to suggest them later. Japanese input programs are far more advanced than T9. Far more advanced...

iTap was always my preferred text input. About the only thing motorola ever got right as far as interface goes. it really reminded me of my japanese sanyo's input method from days gone by. it's so good, even now, that i still second glance motos even though i learned to drop them like a bad habit 2 phones ago. nokia and moto.... geez talk about losing your way....

Yeah. The worldwide phone market is a sorry sight these days. There's nothing I would buy right now or recommend to anyone. I don't like any of the current lineup at all.
