Looking for a good Music Phone

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: aznjunkie

Hi all. I currently have the Moto Rokr E1 and it's time to get a new phone. I want a phone that has a good muisc player. I want the new phone to have music quality comparable to the Rokr E1. Camera on the phone would be nice as well.

I'm debating over three phones and I don't know which one to choose.
1) Nokia 5700 XM, 2) Moto Rokr E6, and last 3) Sony Ericsson K800.

Let me know what you guys think. If there's something better please inform me. I would like to keep the price under $375. Thanks in advance.

Your not looking at any of the walkman series from Sony? W810i?

Posted by: npaladin2000

W810i, Motorola RAZR2 V9, Nokia N75 all come immediately to mind, and they're all within your price range.

Posted by: aznjunkie

I got my brother the SE W810 so I don't want the same phone. I want something different. I perfer candy bar instead of clam shell. My work phone is clam shell and I don't like to have to flip it open to talk.

Posted by: npaladin2000

the W810i is the only real bar music phone around unless you want to get an unlocked Nokia N-Series slider or bar (which aren't strictly music phones but they'll do the job). For the mast part Americans love flip phones.

Posted by: aznjunkie

Yeah... I'm not like most Americans. I want to be different. I know several people who have the w810 already. So.....what about the SE 800i. Even though it's a cybershot it also has a music player. Is the sound comparable to the w810i?

If your primary focus is music then definitely go with a walkman phone over the k800. Based on what you've told us I'd say the W880 would be the best walkman phone for you. It stands out, it's a bar, has a camera, has a good music player. But Also take a look at the W950 (especially since it's getting so cheap ). Both are only triband so take that into consideration.

I've been using the ROKR E6 for a couple months now. It uses real player so the sound is reasonable quality. And it's great having dedicated music keys. However, it's a bit slow switching between songs. Overall, it's a decent phone and it's worth the price.

how about the u600?
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-SGH-U...d/dp/B000PEJ9Q2
its only $14 above your budget, so i don't know if you can stretch it that far.

the music player is better in quality than all the SE walkmans, and it has a 3.2MP camera that can be compared to the SE k800i, with AF, macro mode, exposure metering etc.

Is motorola RIZR Z3 a good music phone?

I don't think I'm on 850mhz where I live but having quad band may be better since I'll never know if I ever need it. The SE W880 does look sexy. I'll will put that on my list instead of the K800. I read that the W950 has some issues. So I pass on that phone.

As for your Rokr E6, I read about some of the issues with that phone such as decent call quality. Do you have issues with call quality?

The Samsung U600 does look very sexy. Does anyone know how good their headset (that's included with the phone) are? Another phone to add to my list.

the supplied headset isn't that good. but you can get a 3.5 jack for about 3 or 4 quid.

Ok thanks for letting me know. Do you own this phone? If so what's your take on the Touch-sensitive keys?

i've owned it for the last 2 weeks or so . the touch sensitive keys were what i was dreading before i got the phone because of all the reviews complaining about them. however, although i didn't really like them in the first day, it didn't take me long to get used to them. they really aren't that bad at all, and in some ways they are actually quite nice to use. its just a case of getting used to them and adjusting to them, that's all.
if i were honest with myself, i would still prefer normal buttons. but even so, don't let yourself get put off the phone just because of the touch sensitive buttons because its almost a non-issue.

btw the keypad isn't touch sensitive. only the left/right soft keys and the end call and receive call buttons are touch sensitive.

aznjunkie, are you dead set against the W810i for some reason? It is a really good music phone.

Don't get me wrong, the SE W810i is a good phone. As I stated my brother and two of my friends also have the same phone. I don't want to be another person in my group with the same phone. It's bad enough they get confuse trying to figure out which phone belongs to who when the phone are placed together. That’s why I want a phone that my friends don’t have.

Posted by: jontymisra

He said his brother has it. I'd look into the W880 as well, it looks incredibly nice for a walkman phone.

Do they have the black one? Get the white.....it is pretty hot.

Yeah they all have the black. The white is nice, but I still want something different.

GeminiIII - I would like to ask another question about the U600. Does the phone have a "flight mode" like the SE? Thanks.

yes, but it's called "Offline mode" on the u600. it's exactly the same, just different name.
if need be, feel free to ask any questions about the u600 and i'll do my best to answer them

GeminiIII – I’m leaning toward the U600. I would like to ask your opinion on some questions that I have.

1) How’s the quality of the phone? Does it feel cheap, sturdy, it will break if you sneeze at it, etc?
2) How’s the sliding mechanism? Does it feel smooth, stiff, cheap, etc??
3) Do you have issues with the touch sensitive keys dialing people without your notice?
4) How’s the battery life?

Sorry about asking so many questions, but I just want to make a good decision on buying my next phone. And for those who have the U600 please feel free to add your opinion on the phone.

Sorry about asking so many questions, but I just want to make a good decision on buying my next phone. And for those who have the U600 please feel free to add your opinion on the phone.

1) it's excellent quality.....for a slider. all sliders give me that impression that they can break easily. obviously, that's not a criticism of the u600, but a criticism of all sliders. but yeah, for a slider it does feel surprisingly solid even given its lack of thickness. i personally think that samsung are amongst the best, if not, thee best, for overall build quality, with moto and then nokia not far behind.

2) it feels smooth. it's not stiff, but it doesn't slide out accidentally either. its just right IMO. its got a nice feel to it. some people have said that there is a wobble of some sorts, but i haven't got that. not sure what else to add.

3) before i got the phone i heard of people saying that they called people by mistake, and it gave me cause to worry. now that i've owned it for a few weeks, i'm not too sure how on earth they managed to do that. when you press the call button it brings up the list of recently dialled or texted contacts. the only way you could call someone by mistake is by accidentally pressing the call button, then accidentally pressing it again a few seconds later. hmmm i don't buy that at all. it just isn't practically possible unless some people have the reaction speed of a sloth with co-ordination problems.

4) not too hot with the supplied battery. its not bad, but it's not exactly good either. with a few phone calls, some pics taken by the camera, and about 20 sms, you'll have to charge it about once every 4 days. you can buy a 1000 mAH battery for it for about 4 quid which should give it around 5-6 hours call time.

GeminiIII - Thank you very much for your inputs. I do have one more question. How is the music player? Are there gaps in between songs? Is there any lag when switching between songs? Once again thank you.

im surprise no1 mentioned the sony ericsson w610.. its a great phone and meeets your needs, just got it like 4 days ago.

qualitywise, it better than all the walkman phones from sony ericsson, but not as good as the nokia n91. i don't know how it compares with various motos such as the E2 and E6. from what i can gather, its about the same quality as the motorolas.

the gaps seem to be about 3 seconds. there's some lag in between changing songs - it's not instant

because the walkmans have long since been surpassed and are old hat now. they're lagging in the music department relative to the competition.

i can attest to geminis comment on the sound quality. i was listening on my frends u600 some days ago, and i was so damm surprised and jealous of the phone. it was like an ipod experience...

Posted by: aznjunkie

Once again GeminiIII thank you.

sk1p2myl0u - How does your friend like their U600?

Posted by: aznjunkie

Thank you sk1p2myl0u and GeminiIII. I think I will get the U600...now I need to decide on which color to get.

Posted by: Nas6034

why not the Nokia Express series they seem good and are sliders..

Posted by: aznjunkie

I did consider the Nokia 5700. If I'm not mistaken the Nokia 5300 is the only express with the slider. I would rather have a newer model phone which is why I consider the 5700. I wasn't looking for just a slider phone, I wanted a good music phone. No one really gave me any feedback on the 5700 and I was reading mixed review on the 5700 as well. I was debating to get either the 5700 or the U600.

Posted by: crac16

I have a nokia 5700 and it is just short of a n95 when it comes to capabilities. Good mobile for media. The sound quality is clear though the bass is not as powerful as one would want it to be (wonder if nokia could get that fixed with an update? ) but highs reproduced quite well. Video looks excellent on the screen( have a couple music videos on mine). Anything else you would want in terms of functionality in apps, its a s60 so just dld something new for it. Overall it doesn't disappoint...
