Iphone and ATT premier discount question

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: au6768

i was wondering if there was ever a definitive answer as to whether or not premier discounts were being taken off of accounts that have Iphones on them...my situation that i was wondering about deals with a family talk plan...i have the family talk with 1400 minutes a month and after my discount it comes to $68.00 and then 10 bucks for each additional line...if i add an iphone to a line that is not the primary account would i just have to pay $20 more a month for the data and would i still retain my discount? or do you lose the discount regardless of what line the iphone is on??? thanks for the help in advance

Posted by: chtrho51

do a search. This has been discussed before with some pretty good answers.

I cant remember if it was a yes or no off the top of my head.

Posted by: au6768

i did go through and do a search but the issue seemed like it was kind of left up in the air...i was just wondering if anyone has anything concrete as I am looking to get a new phone asap...thanks

Posted by: damnyooneek2

yea i dont know. i got my discount last month though hopefully they dont catch on

Posted by: seaofcrap

Well it appears they took mine off. I think I still qualify for the equipment discount, though. Just no discount for the monthly plan.

Posted by: Maverick05

everything stays the same with premier (since premier offers many more benefits than just line discount) but your line discount disappears and the data/message packages for the iphone are as is with no discount.

Posted by: DGMVW

That's stupid. That was kind of the whole reason I switched to Cingular...for the corporate discount. I would love an iPhone, but I like my money more. I was thinking of buying the next gen iPhone, but if I don't get to keep my discount then I'm not buying one.

Posted by: thenamcam

lost my discount. i was told by att that as soon as an iphone goes on your account, all discounts are gone.

Posted by: ktsanf

I've been trying to get an answer on this also. I was given two different answers at the local AT&T store by two different people. I called AT&T a couple times and was finally told yesterday that Apple set the rules on the discounts (not sure how true this is) and that as soon as I add an iPhone the discount would be taken off of our account. I'm hoping this is changed soon.

Posted by: aneftp

NO DISCOUNTS on ANY FAN accounts if there is an iPhone on any of the lines.

It does not matter which line you put it on if you have a family plan (IE primary, secondary etc), if anyone of them has an iPhone, than no discount.

This sucks for people with discounts. Mine was 24%. I seriously debated returning the iPhone was this sole reason. Basically I would be losing at least 17-18 dollars in discounts each month. My OLAM showed that I did not get a discount with my iphone.

Some people report still getting a discount on their first bills (after their iphone purchase), I don't know how long before ATT's computer system catches up with these people.

I did the next best thing, I called them up, had them cancel my iPhone data plan, re-added my Moto V3xx along with the media max 200 plan. I did this yesterday and used a little bit of EDGE with the Iphone. My plan ended the 24th so I will see in a couple of days whether they are charging me extra data prices for my one data (more like 20 minutes of data usage with the iPhone's) and I'll decide if I can get away with it.

My OLAM showed after switching back to the V3xx that I get a 24% discount back.

If I get caught, I'll just pony up and re-lose my discount. Basically I'm losing 200 dollars each year in lost of my corp. discount. It's not much money (at least for me) in the overall scheme of things in life, but ATT/Apple want to nickle and dime good paying customers.

Posted by: Angelo921

I believe you can get a discount if you have 3 services combined on one bill from SBC. For example I have ATT/Cingular, SBC for home phone and SBC DSL. I have not called yet to bundle but will post back once I do what the discount is. From what I was told it is as much as 10% off total.

Posted by: au6768

i just got off of the phone with att and they told me that i would only lose the discounts that were on the iphone line....he told me to just put the iphone on a line that is not the primary line in the family plan and therefore the primary line would still retain the voice plan discounts...so you would get the primary line which would still have the discount and then with the iphone line you would just add the 20 bucks a month for the data...the scenario would look like this

Line 1-primary:motorola razr (1400 minutes=$68.00 after discount, originally $80)
Line 2: iphone ($9.99 added line and then $20.00 for data..no discounts)
Line 3: Razr (9.99 for the added line and this line could also still have discounts)

total with discount = $107.98 (without the discount the total would be (119.98)

I am really hoping that this is true because if so i am going to get the iphone...let me know if you all are hearing something different..thanks

EDIT: just spoke with someone else at ATT and she told me that regardless of what account the iphone is on you lose ALL of the discounts....needless to say I am not very happy...

Posted by: ktsanf

I was told different yesterday. They told me that as soon as I add the iPhone, whether it is the primary line or not, the discount would go away. Maybe they'll get it figured out some day....

Posted by: BethanyBoo

I had retained my discount for a while, but I just checked and now mine's gone too.

Posted by: furqan8421

I've heard conflicting stories as well. Was told that the iphone primary would mean everyone loses a discount, was also told that if the iphone was on a secondary line the discount would apply to other phones in the family plan, and have also been told that if the iphone is on any line all discounts are removed

Currently I just called until I got someone who said that the discount will apply if the iphone isnt primary, and looking online it shows a discount for the other lines so I'm hoping this sticks

Posted by: pacohaas

this thread has some info and a screenshot of a bill with discounts on primary, no discounts on the iPhone line: http://howardforums.com/showpost.ph...19&postcount=53

Posted by: ianturner

so if the iphone is on my line, and its the primary, can i just call customer care and change my fiance's line to the primary line? becuase i dont want her to have my iphone!

Posted by: BIGMERF

your discount is removed nomatter where the phone is....some people still saw it becouse there billing was in transistion...by sept evrybodies discount will be gone..it will show but there will be no deductions

Posted by: ianturner

that sucks....i really liked my military discount

Posted by: BIGMERF

i have a 23 percent fedex discount, its on of the reasons i havent gotten it yet

Posted by: ianturner

yeah mine was 19%

Posted by: pacohaas

by september, every iPhone subscriber will have a 50% discount on all voice and data plans. There, don't I sound smart when I boldly make statements and don't back them up? Bigmerf, if someone at AT&T told you that, call them and talk to someone else, they will give you a different story. There doesn't seem to be a "company line" on this issue, that's why there is such confusion, and to make a blanket statement like yours without any sort of proof is just ignorant.

Posted by: BIGMERF

i spoke to a total of like 6 or 7 att reps (2 of them being managers) and atleast 5 of them told me no discounts! the 6th guy told me i coudnt have it on my lines i had to open a seperate line..he was obviously clueless. i wasnt making it up, it is what they told me. i really hope i am wrong..dont say it was a blind statment, becouse it wasnt, and by the way there were a few others that said the same..

Posted by: pacohaas

and several others here as well as other AT&T managers who have said the opposite.

It was a blind statement, you came in and said, "your discount is removed nomatter where the phone is....some people still saw it becouse there billing was in transistion...by sept evrybodies discount will be gone..it will show but there will be no deductions"

Without mentioning that you had "heard it from a few reps and read other people's statements on this forum", and neglected to state that there are also opposing stories from AT&T reps/managers as well as people who have posted their bills showing their discounts have been applied. There is at least one person who has even been able to apply an education discount to a family plan that exclusively has 2 iPhone lines and NO regular lines. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying AppT&Tle doesn't even know, and to add to the confusion, AT&T managers on both sides of the argument insist that they know what they are talking about while Apple employees remain oblivious. I think we will just have to wait a few months for more reports from the early adopters to see what's happening on their bills.

Posted by: BIGMERF

OK PERFECTIONIST.. anyway i pray im wrong..i know i dont want to lose my discount

Posted by: pacohaas

yeah, me too. It's too bad there isn't a company line on this. It should be clearly stated in the terms and conditions and we should be able to look it up on their website, but we can't. I guess discounts is a gray area for AT&T and I'm sure they don't mind if people lose their discounts. Unfortunately apple's website still says you can "*just add one of these data plans to your existing voice plan." if you are a current customer, and doesn't mention anything about it &$#*ing up your current family plan. It's hard to find any details about family plans at all, especially discounted ones.

To me it would make the most sense if the $20(or whatever tier you choose) was not discounted, but the $9.99(non-primary) or $x9.99(primary) voice plan should continue to be discounted according to the Military/education/corporate terms with which you got the line discount in the first place. I mean, when your company negotiated the deal with AT&T/cingular, it was for all plans, not all plans except if you have a certain phone. I find it appalling that buying a $600 phone would cause you to lose your military/education discounts. The whole reason they are there is to give these people a well-deserved break for their under compensated work. If they got it as a gift and then were forced to drop their discount not only from their line, but from all lines on their family plan, that's pretty sad. I wish AT&T and Apple were listening to us. I would think they would want to maintain their positions as companies that care about education, etc.

Posted by: BIGMERF

i went to the att store to try out the phone(edge sucks) and get total pricing for the phone and accessories so i can have evrything ready...i asked the employee who works there if i apply the phone to my 4 line plan, would i lose the discount. he said aslong as its not on the main line..i will be ok...dont know if its true but its what he told me..bet if i went in there tommorrow and asked somebody else they'd say different...lol

I called last week and spoke to CS, she said "no discount", but then I told her someone else told me that I can call when my iphone is activated and get it added back on. She checked with someone and said "since I was an existing customer I can get the discount back"?? I didn't have the Sponsor # so she updated her notes. I went to the corporate store soon after with my military ID and they added it, they said.

I looked and I am showing as having a corporate account again but I guess I'll have to wait and see if I get a discount?

thats great new! do you see the actual percentage taken off? some people have reported that it said on the upper right hand coner that the discount was there but that they didnt have any actual deductions...do you see deductions on your bill?

Posted by: truciet

i got roughly $14 off from the primary line. It shows as national discount. the deductions is in the same place as always, under credit/charges/adjustments

Posted by: BIGMERF

bump, bump! anybody get there full cycleed bill and see a discount..please report

Posted by: jhson114

anyone know if you lose your premier discount even if you bypass att activation? so instead of activating your iphone through itune, you use many known bypass activation methods available online, take sim card out from your old phone, insert it in the iphone and just use it. this is what i am doing right now and i am curious whether i am going to lose my discount or not.

Posted by: MI_canuck

my voice plan discount was only 7% - so i'm not complaining - small price to pay to own the iphone imo...

as for anyone expecting to retain their voice plan discount - i don't see how - there was an agreement you had to click yes to upon activation that basically said you are no longer entitled to the premier/company discounts...

peace

Posted by: BIGMERF

I still see it online... Hope of stays. I know when I went to buy the case and car charger they have met discount.

but if you bypassed activation, you dont agree to anything, so discount should techincally continue.. right?

Posted by: amkls704

You will still receive your discount....on any phone that is NOT an iPhone, lol...if you have your primary line set up with a different phone, you get the discount on that line, and so on...but nothing on iPhone, right now anyways...one CSR said that after the hype dies down and in a while, it will probably be offered again, but she said not to stick her to it, because she really wasn't positive.

Posted by: truciet

my next bill will be around teh 27th. this will be my second cycle/bill. discount still shows so i'll post once i get it

Posted by: pacohaas

thanks for the updates, keep em coming.

Posted by: pacohaas

uh oh "AT&T Employee: AT&T Lied, Employee Discounts Don't Apply To iPhone Calling Plans"

Posted by: rgiorgio

strange, i had my discount for the first month than i lost it. Now the thing that gets me made is that no where on the ATT site says no premier discounts or what not. shouldnt that be said somewhere ? i mean even the customer care reps tell me it will be applied again next billing cycle. SO come on ATT , im going to record them tell me this and than fight to keep it. This is a benefit from my company to get discounts on cell phone service so im going to fight it.

it does say that you are forfeiting any corporate discount when you activate your phone with itunes... a form pops that you must agree to in order to continue with the activation (assuming you are the one that activated your phone)

Posted by: rgiorgio

No they did it for me at the apple store.

then it was their obligation to tell you

i activated at home through itunes, saw the message, was aware of losing the discount (in my case only 7% plan discount... pretty good equipment discount but does no good with iphone).... and gladly agreed to it in order to activate my iphone.

Hopefully we can put this to bed: there is no premier discount. I've included a link to a Q&A from AT&T; it's the fourth question down from the top.

http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/iphone-faqs.jsp

This is pretty much why I haven't switched to the iPhone. Well, that and also because the BB Curve has been one of the most rock solid phones I've ever used. Hopefully AT&T will make premier discounts available in the future for potential iPhone users, but taking discounts away from existing business customers that want to use the iPhone.....to me, that makes absolutely no sense from a business perspective. Whatever.

Posted by: aznjunkie

I had to contact AT&T regarding my discount. I activated my iPhone on the last day of my billing cycle. I just received the last month bill and I didn’t receive a discount on my primary line yet the other line got the discount. I called AT&T and asked why I didn’t receive the discount and I didn’t tell the rep that I purchase the iPhone. He checked in to my account and said their system took out my discount and it showed that there was a change in my account.

Then he told me that if I were to lose my discount because I cancel my service or whatever. It would take 2 billing cycles before the system completely removed the discount since this help avoid any billing issues. So their system voided my discount as soon as I activated the iPhone. He was kind enough to give me my discount instead of giving me a run around.

I think those who are still getting discounts will end up losing their discount after 2 billing cycles. I hope I’m wrong though. Sad part is that I ended up return my iPhone due to issues with the phone. I really do miss the iPhone….I may cave in and get it again.

Posted by: BIGMERF

i just got my bill my discount is still there, then again i did get my phone 2 weeks ago.. but it is not on my main line my main line has a sliver on it. ill have to wait till it cycles through to see exactly what happens..have the people who applied the phone to a secondary line still lose there dicount on there main line?

I agree it's horrible that they(Apple & AT&T) would take away this discount. Military personnell use this discount, as do teachers. The thing the FAQ fail to mention(which I've been told by half the AT&T reps I've talked to) is whether the discount is removed from just the iPhone line or all other lines on an existing family plan. I get varying responses about that one depending on the phase of the moon. If they would add that to their FAQ (and it was the answer I wanted), I'd go out and buy the $600 phone today, pay the extra $20/month, and extra 25% of my discounted familytalk line($9.99). But as it stands, everything is up in the air, there are reps who are adament about both sides of the argument, as well as people who's bills seem to reflect the same division of corporate policy. I need to be guaranteed that the rest of my family won't get screwed if/when I add an iPhone to my line, or else it's no iPhone for me.

Posted by: pacohaas

any updates from the 2nd month of bills? I'm ready to buy my iPhone now if discounts stay for the rest of my family.

Posted by: jkozlow3

I'm sure this has been brought up, but what in the WORLD does owning a particular model of phone have to do with your service discount? Has AT&T lost their mind? This is NOT RIGHT.

Posted by: pacohaas

yeah, hopefully apple will wake up and see what's going on and put a stop to the madness. At the very least, the education and military discounts should continue to apply to the $9.99 part of family lines, if not the $20 iPhone data plan, and by all means they should strengthen the knowledge of employees and let everyone know it is possible(and should be policy) to let the remaining lines on a family plan keep their discounts. As you said, one device on a family plan should not be doing this much mayhem. That's why i haven't bought one yet. I'd get it on my way home today if I knew the rest of my family wouldn't suffer for my choice of phone.

Posted by: pacohaas

I took the plunge last month and things look good so far, see this post for screenshots of my first bill. iPhone is one of 3 secondary lines, all 4 lines used to get the discount, now all but the iPhone line gets it: http://howardforums.com/showthread....363#post9987363
