Sharp 703SHf Roaming indicator

hey guys, I recently bought a Used Sharp 703Shf from ebay. I think it's the japanese firmware version, but if you want me to find out, please tell me how. Anyways, near my signal bar there is a little 'G' that indicates im using GSM technology because Canada being cheap doesn't support 3G that I know of. The problem is, it shows a 'G' and a suitcase. The suitcase according to the legend in the manual represents the phone as roaming out of it's network. I'm having trouble with this because I'm roaming when i'm inside my range. Anyone have prblems like this? I did already do a master Setting reset, scared to do a full master reset though.

If it works - don't reset it! Just patiently wait for someone to give a tip.

Yes, a suitcase appearing means you're roaming off your home network. There are many people from Canada here so they should be able to help you out better than me, but I'll ask, who's your carrier, and did you see a roaming connector in your previous phone with the same SIM card?

My carrier is Fido but I use the Rogers Wireless signal for some reason, I think Fido and Rogers is joint somehow, but this is most case for Fido people. My old phone, the sony ericsson t237 I think was a fido locked phone and did not show roaming. I did have a Motorola SLVR with the same problem too I think, but I can't exactly recall. It had the green triangle up at the top. Cheerio

Yeah I remember reading that Rogers and Fido merged but wasn't 100% sure so didn't mention it. But if your older phones were also showing roaming indicators (green triangle on Moto phones means roaming) then this isn't unusual. I think if you got a new SIM card it wouldn't show roaming anymore, but I don't know for sure. In any case you can probably ignore the briefcase

ahh ok, but it's like bugging me because I could save a little bit of battery power if the LCD wasn't projecting that little anooyance lol. Well thanks a bunch for your help. Just to conclude...I shouldn't be charged any roaming charges when i'm in my district right?

Dont worry I am on Fido too using 903. I have the same brief case thingy. So no problem!

technically fido and rogers are the same company, and they share the same network, your old phone shows fido only cause it's locked by fido. (i thought the G beside the signal bar means 3G, that's only cause you have the service on "Auto")

BTW, canada does have 3G now, it's from rogers called Rogers Vision.

G = GSM, 3G = W-CDMA. Just to clarify.

Yes Rogers has 3G now, but it's on the 1900 band like the US, meaning Sharp phones can't connect to it.

wait so, my 703SHf doesn't have the 1900 Band?! My seller who sold the phone to me said check with fido to see if they support 1900 because that could also be the reason. How come it wouldn't pick up? My sharp is 3G though...

Posted by: DigitalHz

you can only use 3G if you are a rogers Vision user.

Posted by: AL9999

It supports GSM 1900, but not 3G 1900. That's how it works.

to clarify...

cingular and rogers' 3G is actually considered 3.5G HSDPA that Japan is just rolling out now too.

the roaming indicator is always on when you use a sim card other that softbank/vodafone's... just like when a motorola is unlocked by anything other than subsidy code there is a TRIANGLE at the top of the screen. its because the firmware was written for one provider but the sim its reading from is from another.

rogers and fido are the same company because rogers bought fido...

telus and bell use the same network/towers, but they are not the same company..

the G at the top of a sharp phone means you are connected to a GSM network. when you are in a 3G area (like when i roamed in Japan on my Fido sim with my 903sh), it showed a 3G logo instead of the G logo.

haha, that's what i said isnt it, :P, rogers and fido are the same company but they still operate separately tho, only if they can combine together then i could call anyone unlimited, lol

and for the 3.5G, it says on the softbank site as 3G Highspeed,

Posted by: AL9999

"3G Highspeed" is a brand name only. Softbank is running HSDPA just like every other 3G carrier worldwide who are upgrading their speeds. However Softbank is running 3G on the 2100 band like in Europe, whereas Canada operators are following the US and running 3G on the 1900 band only.

I love how no-one can come together on this. It's like PAL and NTSC... except worse!

Posted by: aw614

I agree that is worse, at least some dvd players can play both pal and ntsc with no problems

LOL, umm you guys can stop fighting over 3G and HSPDA er w/e you guys are talking about. I got the answer I was looking for. I don't think there is any need of bickering at each other about who knows more or not, or if someone fighting needs to be schooled. So, let's just keep it simple in regards to the Thread k? lol, cheers!
