I currently have Cingular/AT&T with a big slow chunky Sony Ericsson Z500a, and my contract is almost up. My service (or my phone, or both) also suck in Atlanta, and I'm thinking of moving to T-Mobile.

I've done some research (including lurking around on these forums) on phones with good reception, good battery life and a decent camera (I occasionally see something I want to take a picture of when I don't have my REAL camera on me, and the Z500a is... dismal), and I've come up with the Samsung T629 and the Motorola KRZR K1.

As far as I can tell, the KRZR has better battery life, but the T629 might be faster and have better reception, and it's not a flashy RAZR-type phone.
I've tried both of them at a T-Mobile store and I've verified their keypads at least aren't as bad as the recessed keys on the Z500a; I slightly prefer the KRZR's keypad even though the menu keys are a little small. On the other hand the T629 wins on overall aesthetics and is slightly cheaper.

I don't really care about text messaging, music, internet, or games.

Could anyone give me an idea how the two compare, especially in terms of battery life, ease of use, reception, and durability?

T-Mobile is going to release lots of phones in August/September so wait for those (T729, T639 - first 3G phone, BB 8320, Rarz^2 V8, and etc).

Yeah, I'm curious to see what the T-729 is, especially since what little specs I've seen are the same as the T-629... I have until the middle of August, perhaps a little longer if AT&T will let me drag on for another month.

At the same time I realize there will ALWAYS be better phones coming out, so it'll have to be something pretty amazing and relatively cheap to make me stick with this $40 plan I'm not using all of.

i personally don't like the KRZR. it was on my list at one time, but there seems to be lots of bad reviews of it. of course, i'm always mindful that some reviews may be biased for or against, and lots of user reviews include reviews by people just wanting to slate a phone or a brand. taking them into consideration, i decided to pass on the KRZR. i think the consensus was that it has some issues (at least at the present time).
especially for what you want, i would pass on the KRZR. the phone is meant to have some build issues, is meant to be a bit slow (not everyone has found this to be the case), and the battery life isn't anything to write home about.

what other phones are available to you? for example, are you buying your phones sim free with a limited budget, or are you choosing from a list of phones that the network offers?

I'm basically looking at locked phones with contract because they're cheaper, so I'm limiting myself to the choices T-Mobile gives me.

Of those, the KRZR seems to have the highest battery life... hence why I'm asking, since according to SPECIFICATIONS my current phone has better battery life than either the T629 or the KRZR. And since both are 'fashion' phones (which seems to be the way to get a decent camera), a lot of people are reviewing them with different expectations than I have.

I've read lots (lots) of reviews and I can only conclude that people who review their purchases usually do it when they have a gripe, or when it's the Best Thing Ever. After reading a bunch of those I concluded I'd be better off with a tin can and some string... but anyway.

I'm looking at the T-Mobile $30/300min plan (Sprint SERO sounds better, but I've seen a disproportionate number of horror stories about Sprint; the phones aren't as good; and a friend of mine with Sprint isn't happy with his reception around here)... If I went prepaid, I'd have to purchase the phone at or near retail prices anyway, so it would be less of a problem to expand my selections...

Anything you recommend?

I'm sorry to dredge up this old thread of mine, but I'm not sure what GeminiIII means about the KRZR's battery life "not being worth writing home about"... From my comparisons it seemed to have among the best - six hours talk time and all. Do you mean I could do better, or are their listings wrong?

And as for slow... do you mean slow as in 'could be faster', or 'takes a full second to respond to keypresses and doesn't buffer'?

well, from what i've heard it seems to fall short of that. because it was once on my list, i did some reading up and that was one of the the things that seemed to crop up a lot. maybe it's to be taken with a pinch of salt, i don't know. the phone didn't seem as positive as what i would liked it to have been, but that doesn't mean to say that your experience of the phone will be in any way bad.
almost all manufacturers estimates for talk time are overstated anyway.
