What sip voip providers are available in Canada?
I'd prefer to be billed only for actual time used, but a cheap package would
work too.

currently I know of voicemeup, vonage and shaw cable.

try acanac or les.net

Happy with Callcentric's Pay-Per-Min option.

try www.magicjack.com. Its $20 a year unlimited, USA and Canada, thats pretty darn cheap if you ask me. I have two units and they sound like a landline phone. They give you call waiting, caller ID, voicemail, 3-way calling, and call forwarding....for $20/yr how can you go wrong

Is this SIP-based?

I've been using VBuzzer (www.vbuzzer.com) for several months now which is dirt cheap.

I've also got a secondary Callcentric account which has also been solid.

If you really are in the mood for some reading see these:

http://www.voipproviderslist.com/co...oviders-canada/

http://www.myvoipprovider.com/

http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/...ad.php?t=454642

Personally I would suggest:

-VoXalot (Free Account)
-PBXes (Free Account)
-One of the Betamax services (I have been using InternetCalls)
-At least one other VoIP provider with reasonable international rates (Been using VBuzzer and VoiceStick, both on Pay As You Go)

With those 4 things in place you can make most calls free or cheap from VoIP line, or a regular phone for that matter

Any updates on these?

Have been using vbuzzer since 2006. At first their quality was kind of unstable, but now it's pretty good. For $50 a year you get a Canadian or US number and unlimited local calling.

Using Cybersurf for a few years

Posted by: snugglebunny

As someone said; www.Acanac.com is $9.95 per month, taxes included (they have both US and Canadian area codes), unlimited incoming and outgoing.

I have it terminated on a Linksys ATA a home and use a soft phone on my laptop when I'm travelling - works great over a 3G connection. It is a good thing my office pays for my US-based ATT 3G data plan.

Note that there is a 50 number per month called number limit for personal accounts - hasn't bothered me yet because I run a hardline for most of my calling, but I have a friend who had to call their support to have the limit lifted - it manifests itself as a recorded message before each outgoing call.

If you subscribe (voice or internet access - their internet is a steal the first year at $19/month tax included - $25 for 20 meg symmetrical, fully unlimited and no blocked ports except port 25), please let me know your details by PM because they spiff referrals.

Good luck

(now, all I need to do is get this working on my N95-4!!)

I'll test mine out, let you know if it works. I had it working, and disabled it. I'll get back to you...

I had created a Toronto number and was setting it to forward to my Montreal number. This way, people in Toronto can contact me for free. It worked at the beginning but then my sister informed me that it was no longer working (happened about 1-2 months ago).

I still have my Toronto number but don't use their softphone software so I'll see if it starts working again.

I tested for the day yesterday, it's working 100% I know when the company first started up there was some issues with the site that didn't allow all the features to work. Their technical support called me back and helped me get things going and I used it for a month or so. So yes, mine does work. You should give it another shot. It's free and I love the company! I noticed that they are owned by Fibernetics which is a CLEC in Canada. They have a pretty wild IP PBX offering for businesses I am thinking about testing out. Has anyone else tried it? Apparently after you buy the unit for $1295 one time fee, and take their business internet, you erase your business local line cost. You read it right. $0 monthly local lines. I have 5 business lines and pay almost $50 each so I could save $250 a month if this works. Free sounds too good to be true though. But, I think I'm going to check it out. It's worth saving the money if it works. Their network quality is good with the freephoneline softphone I use... and I didn't buy their internet. The customer service rep told me that that they are fiber linked into Bell Canada and by having their internet connection they get a real clean connection end to end which makes voice quality excellent. Anyways, I should have some feedback about this product in a few months once I get a shot at testing it out and seeing if it's 'for real'. If anyone has any feedback let me know. Or, maybe I should start a new thread on Business IP PBX?

Thanks. I just tested it and it is working for me as well. When I call my Toronto number, the number that it is forwarded to (i.e. my Montreal number) rings.

it took a little while to get the quirks out but now my Linksys router handles it well, and I use the softphone when I travel. I didn't even know my wife's E61 had a voip client built in. I tried it a few times now while I was on vacation and ACANAC works great on the e61.

I though ACANAC was a great deal 120$ taxes in but now I see vbuzzer is much cheaper hmmm...

Any update of the cost/benefit comparison between ACANAC and vbuzzer ?

The Acanac website is simpler to understand and give me a better "feeling" of quality and support.....but that's just "feeling"...can anyone provide some user experience ? Thanks

Posted by: nambi

Funny how you should comment on their website, as I was browsing through bulk templates online for sale and I noticed the one Acanac uses was up there. But in general their website gave me the information I needed, it didn't provide any functionality though.

I have used acanac for almost 2 years now, and I can say I am happy with it, if I compare it to local LAN lines no it's not as good, definitely has it's problems but for the majority of the time the calls are good and for the price it's great.

voip.ms and freephoneline.ca are what I use.

Posted by: mmmiles

I don't quite understand how these services work. I am looking for an incoming # to forward to my cell, for business use.

I'm not quite sure I get where VOIP really comes in here. The incoming call is voip to your home network, then turns gets punted to the voice network from there?
