I'm bored so I'll rant about the Calculator now

Amateur stuff to say the least. No delete. No Clear Entry. No square root.

An enhanced calculator to replace the stock one should be the first "real" app. someone creates. It should be easy enough once the ability to create apps. comes along. Once again, it's disappointing that Apple couldn't do it right to begin with. It makes one wonder how many programmers they actually have. A single newbie intern in a week should have been able to create something better than this.

I guess all the programmers that it took to make the thing work at all wasn't enough for you. The calculator's a real profit generator for Apple so they should spend heavily to make sure it works to your spec.

I think it was a design choice. The calculator on the iPhone looks just like the Calculator widget on OS X. Does the 'C' key on the bottom row not clear the entry?

They could have at least added the CE button. I hate doing the calculations all over again by hitting C. But live currency translation, a tax button, and an easy tip calculator would have really been enough.

I love how people defend mediocrity.

Whose spec. was it that didn't want the ability to correct errors without having to start completely over? Certainly not anyone that would actually use the thing.

The calculator doesn't generate profit for Apple therefore it's ok that it's a piece of crap. I just checked three cheap phones that I have laying around and all three have the ability to at least backspace for correcting errors.

I guess given all the other problems, bugs, limitations of the iPhone it doesn't surprise me at all that Apple couldn't even have done a decent calculator though. I hope they're hiring more software engineers. They apparently need to. Even as pathetically simple as this calculator is it still has bugs:

Even the Windows calculator has a backspace, CE, etc.

Welcome to an Apple product. They do things their way.

I bookmarked this on my phone:

This is a good one too. Full screen, should be easy to type on.

I somehow get the feeling the calc app wasn't a priority. The dashboard widget is an interesting parallel. It is meant to pop into view to do a quick thing and then forget about. If you want a more advanced one there are tons of choices. My brother is writing a sci calc app for the iPhone btw which looks decent, and it works off-line too

You know, you can use your computer's keyboard to operate the dashboard calculator, i.e. backspace = ce. Is that approach possible on the iPhone?

And no percent key. Even a free Shrek calculator in a box of cereal has a percent key.

I'd like to see someone come up with an iphone version of the HP12C RPN Financial calculator.

Amateur stuff, huh? Actually, what an amateur would do is cram a bunch of features into an interface to satisfy a small subset of users while ignoring the simplicity that the vast majority of users want.
