question about returning the iphone

I was just wondering, for all of the people that I read about saying they are on their 4th...5th...6th phone etc, did yall purchase from an AT&T store?or from an apple store? If yall DID purchase from at&t and have had a problem with your phone how did yall go about getting a new phone without having to pay the restocking fee each time?

Posted by: SkiP02

I bought we at an Apple store. I'm on my 5th one and I have not had to pay the restocking fee because they will only charge you if you are returning the phone not replacing it for another. There is no way that I know of to avoid paying for the restocking fee. But if your phone has a legit problem they will replace it for free.

how can there possibly be a restocking fee if you return a defective product? I paid for mine with a cc specifically for bollocks like that, if I did return mine for a defect and got charged a fee I would charge it back. Screw that.

I think they can waive the fee if they can reproduce the problem you are having. But nothing is final, i'm sure the manager can override the fee on the system.

I guarentee a lot of iPhone returns are Buyers Remourse as opposed to Defective. Even if the person returning it claims defective, its up to Apple Technicians to give the phones the Final Say when it comes time to Refurbing them and using them as OTC Exchanges issued when they request an XBM.

well AT&T has been a big head ache, I've gotten a new phone without having to pay the restocking fee 2 times before this. The final word I got from at&t yesterday was to come in when the store manager is there and he should be able to help me out. I hope and pray that is the case because if not.. My only other option is to send it in to apple so they can work on it and send it back to me, but I'll never recieve a new phone. I'll keep yall posted on what happens monday. I just feel that because I bought it from AT&T I'm getting pentalized because even its defective i still have to pay the restocking fee, or I can send it in to be worked on ..... Just doesnt make sense to me!

At&ts policy: no matter if the phone is defective or not.... If the box is open there is a 10 percent restocking fee!

So because u purchased with a credit card there is a way to get the restocking fee back? I paid for mine with AMEX.

AMEX is the best in consumer protection (they always side with the consumer, at least initially) that is why many merchants dont like amex, and some even charge extra for using amex, esp outside the US or for large purchases (the amex commission is higher)...

Anyways, try taking it to an apple store if you have one near you, make an appointment with one of the retards, ops, geniouses, and ask him to take a look, normally they just give you a new one, they dont even want to see boxes or anything... (and since its out less than a year prolly wont even need a receipt)

Thing is, no apple store near me. I live in louisiana, so there isnt one even remotely close. Hopefully at&ts manager will be able to help me out tomorrow. If not i dont know what my other options would be

The standard manufacturers warranty, which is inuse world wide asks you to have your phone send in to a tech, have him repair it and return it back to you at a reasonable time, also a loaner may be offered, if available and at the certain conditions by the operator. Now, if everyone did just that, then the ammount of Buyer's remourse returns would be a lot lower, there would be MORE stock on hand for the iPhone, so more people will have a chance to buy it instead of having it sold out, as well as the actual TRUE quantity of sold units will be available and not pushed up by NFF, product dissatisfaction.

I woudln't fool with ATT. Just t ake it to the apple store. They are used to these kinds of things happening with the ipods, so they don't give you a hard time. Are there not any apple stores in the great state of Louisiana?

One other thing a lot of people don't know about AMEX. When you purchase any electronic device, AMEX adds 1 year to the manufacturers warranty. They also protect the purchase up to $1,000. If you lose it, break it, etc, they will refund the amount up to $1,000 up to 90 days from the purchase date.

I buy all my electronics on my AMEX card just for that piece of mind. I have never had to use it, but it's nice to know it's there.

I think I may try to risk the restocking fee in order to try the phone for 15 days. Hopefully with some complaining, the Apple store would be willing to waive the restocking fee.

There's no way I'd switch over from Verizon to find out the reception is not up to par. I've tried the phone in a store but couldn't hear anything with all the people crowded inside. Maybe the phone volume really isn't loud enough?

yup that is why I asked if there was an apple store near you. sorry if there isn't you will just have to deal with ATT, try and mail it in to apple,or make a drive. Sucks that they would put 4 stores in Dallas and not one in the whole state of Louisiana.I read the thread.

Same here.

But FWIW, they wouldn't help me with the restock fee.

So Apple wouldn't budge on the restocking fee?

Posted by: aristoBrat

I didn't make an issue about it because I thought AMEX would help me out with it, but yeah, they charged me a restock fee.

I returned it because I wasn't thrilled with its reception. Turns out you're not supposed to get charged a restock fee because of that. At least not at an Apple store at the time I returned it (about a week after launch). Not sure if that's still their policy.

I ended up buying it back a few days later (don't ask), and they sold it back to me at the normal price minus the restock fee.

Did the reception issues improve after you got a different iPhone?

Posted by: aristoBrat

No.

I'm used to my Verizon working working everywhere in my house. My iPhone only works in certain areas. I'll deal.

Hopefully when AT&T gets rid of their old TDMA network here they'll be able to bump up some more GSM.

I live in Louisiana too and that's one of the few things that has me iffy about getting an iPhone (plus I won't have the money until the first week of September). I'd hate to have to drive out to Dallas just to make a return.
