I can't really answer your question because I live in Canada and theres no AT&T up here, but ur age kind of got me thinking, for those who want to avoid the 2year contract could you not just lie about your age on the credit check or perhaps register the Iphone in one of your kids/little cousins/niece/nephew's name who are too young to sign a contract
I know up here you don't have to be 18 to sign up for a prepaid account..perhaps another loop hole?

I mean it really doesn't matter whos name a prepaid account is under does it?

I like it except for that dam message we get everytime we use data or send a text or make a call. It can get old, Im just waiting on a full unlock.

I believe here in the US as well you have to be 18 to enter into any kind of legal contract - which is what you would be entering into with AT&T. Even with the pre-paid service, I think you still have to be 18 (I think it says you must be 18 when you activate through iTunes). You will be required to enter your social security number when you activate it; AT&T will run a credit check and determine whether or not you get pre- or post-paid. The only way I am aware of to get a pre-paid iPhone is to fail the credit check and require a deposit.

All iPhone plans, whether pre-paid or contract plans, include unlimited data and email and visual voicemail. Contract plans include 200 SMS messages (the iPhone does not do MMS like picture or video), pre-paid plans do not have any text allowance they simply are deducted from your total balance. Also, the cheapest prepaid plans do not include unlimited mobile-to-mobile. My plan is $69.98 for 400 minutes, unlimited night/weekend, and unlimited data/visual voicemail (which is awesome). I also pay an additional $19.99 for unlimited text. I'm planning on dropping the deposit and moving to a contract, which will either be the 450/5000 minute $59.99 plan and the $19.99 unlimited text or the next one up, 900/unlimited night and weekend and (I think) $10.00 for 1500 text messages.

I suppose your only option is to get it under one of your parents names, but if they've got good credit I don't know of a way to get a pre-paid plan.

Note that if you do keep your RAZR, you'll need to get a new phone number for your iPhone. Finally, the balance alert messages are really annoying, even when they're working properly.

sorry I forgot to leave out that I'm getting a iphone under my dads name and he has terrible credit so he'll fail it for sure so then I'll go prepaid.. and my razor is tmobile and I get 3000 minutes for 59.99 so yeah
the message comes everytime after a text and data? that's sucks but oh well but one thing do all the feautures such as youtube edge still work?

thanx again

Yes youtube and the visual voicemail both work fine. Text messaging is not included in the prepaid plan, you have to add it for $5.00 a month for 200 texts.

How about this:

1) Don't take the advice telling you to lie about stuff. It's seductive, and tough to draw a line about when to lie and when to tell the truth. If someone says to you "everyone does it", I'd say to you "distinguish yourself by not doing it."

2) I had a prepaid plan for a while, since I'm a Canadian and therefore don't have a SSN. There is currently an unresolved nuisance issue with prepaid, whereby the phone displays a pop-up message telling you "the last call cost you $0.00 and you have $x.xx left". This message comes up every 10 minutes or so, and each one has to be manually "cleared". So, if you leave your phone on overnight, you have 50 of them to click through. The message seems to occur whenever EDGE connection is set up/torn down (ie: every time mail is checked). Last time I checked, which was a couple weeks ago, timeline to resolve this was unknown. I ended up moving to post-paid, but would have stayed with prepaid if it wasn't for this issue.

3) I don't know anything about your financial situation, but if $600 is a lot to you, how about putting it toward something a little more useful rather than a cell phone?

You already have a phone. You are 16. Your father has terrible credit. Why the heck would you want an iphone that you can barely afford???

Hmmm it was to my understanding that the GoPhone prepaid does not allow roaming in Canada... Are you using your phone in Canada with prepaid?

Also, how did you sign up w/o a SS#? Did you just put all 9's?

first of all I'm 16 wtf does that matter second how are you going to say I can barely afford an iphone , you don't know me I have way moer phones then an average 16 year old and just cause my dad has bad credit dosnt mean anything..
so I can afford an iphone I just want prepaid so I could keep my tmobile plan and buy a razor instead of my sidekick 3
I was just wondering about the prepaid and how it is..

I switched from prepaid to postpaid while still in the US (actually within 48 hours of activation since the nuisance of the alerts was so bad). Switching to postpaid required a trip to the AT&T store, but was no trouble.

When I activated, I put in my Canadian social insurance number, which is conceptually equivalent to an American social security number. I wasn't sure whether it would or would not work - it's used for credit checks in Canada and there at least used to be an AT&T Canada. It wasn't accepted, and the activation went into "prepaid" mode, after which there was no problem completing the activation.
