While at my friend's tonight she lives in the middle of NOWHERE but has a wireless network.

I noticed tht my iPhone would find her network, attach to it just find, but when i tried to go online it said "COULD NOT ACTIVATE EDGE"
i was under the impression that iPhone would switch between the two networks w/o a problem and choose the fastest...obviously if i had zero service where I was, why wouldn't it connect to the WiFi? does it need to be in a service area?
kinda confused.

If you know that you are in a no-service area.......try putting it in Airplane Mode....see if that works

as soon as it goes into airplane mode it turns off wifi. When I turn wifi on it takes it out of airplane mode thus meaning it's once again seeing no network.

I used the wifi connection in the airport in Bangkok, Thailand. It worked great!

Oh yea, I forgot that you can't have airplane/wifi combo

like you said, the phone will automatically switch between edge and wifi. but will use wifi over edge if you are able to join a network. it sounds like your phone and/or wireless router were not properly setup to work together, which could be a number of things but most likely ip/dhcp settings on the phone or security on the router (type of encryption, mac address filtering, etc.)

I have personally seen my phone connect to a wifi network (showed the airport signal instead of the E), but try to use edge instead because I had the wrong type of WEP setting. this also gave me the error "could not connect to edge" because at the time same time I had no reception in that building.

Go in and reset your network settings in the phone under settings, general, reset, and reset network settings.
