Wing is so slow why? Help!

so my tmobile wing is like a week old, i just put some simple java games on there last night and it's sooooooooooo slow. this is the slowest phone i've owned. i loaded the same games i loaded on my previous phones (cause i like them) and it takes an incredibly long time to long. on my previous phones (w850, v635, v3) the game takes about 1-2 seconds to load. on my wing, it takes at least 30 seconds. i'm looking at my system info (with no apps running in the background) and currently am using 71% program memory and 81% storage memory. is this normal? already tried freeing up ram with sktools and a reboot, but still slow. also, SNES also runs so incredbily slow...is it just me? please help!

WM is incredibly slow anyway, isn't it? it's not a very efficient OS.

is it slow when using native apps? someone once said that java never runs well on WM.

Doesn't sound right. It could be something else you installed. WM has always been decently fast for me depending what I'm loading.

WM is about as fast as any of the smartphone OSes now. Speeds still vary between devices. It's like your computer, if you got a lot of programs not working well together it's obviously going to be slow.

yes but like i mentioned i have nothing running in the background...there another way to check processes running and mem they are taking up?

Out of the box, the Wing was rather slow.

But even though the CPU only has a speed of 201 Mhz, after some tweaking, like leaving only iLock, poutlook, Slide, and WiFiInit in the startup folder, cleaning up the Today screen, following Paul's advisory to edit the size of the pagepool to 6 MB, uninstalling the included, removable garbage, the Wing performs satisfactory on all accounts.
Now if somebody could come up with a ROM that omits the included Acrobat Reader for instance, and inserts TomTom instead, that would be nice

Today screen:

Free memory after soft reset:

That's not a lot of free. Even on older WM devices I tend to have over 20MB for Program memory. It shouldn't cause it to be too slow however. Did anyone cook a ROM for it yet besides the T-Mobile one?

Does SKTools give you the list of active processes? You could try overclocking also. How are other apps loading though? If everything is really slow then it's a system problem and I would advise a hard reset. If it's only the Java being slow then it might be isolated such that the Java manager isn't well configured.

Eh, that's not bad at all. Here's the screen from my Axim x30, with exactly the same programs installed as on the Wing:

it's not. WM devices are almost always equipped with more powerful hardware to offset WM. compare devices that are of almost identical specification(RAM, processor, etc), and only differing in the OS(ie one device is Wm and other other is symbian, linux, or whatever). you will see what i mean

me wonders if there are some hidden background processes that aren't showing up. java uses memory management to kill all the objects created, but i would have thought a reboot would have cleared that. unless the Wing remembers the last state and attempts to restore it.

no sktools does not give you a list of all processes...only the programs running

what do you mean by "uninstalling the included, removable garbage" ? already got rid of the t-zones...what else?

Posted by: babooza69

just deleted couple files in startup folder, did a disk cleanup, freed some ram, and softreset. no big difference. went from 71% and 81% to 61% and 80%. i have no idea what's taking up so much memory any ideas?

Everything that was in there

Posted by: babooza69

is there a way to see ALL processes running and what is taking up what?

Posted by: tonkabui

yeah, get memmaid. you can kill the processes that you want. you can change the startup programs and startup processes as well. your memory usage seems a little high. do you have a memory card where you are storing all your extra programs?

Posted by: babooza69

no i don't use an extra mem card should i?

Posted by: babooza69

just changed the page pooling to 4mb...doesn't help still slow i don't want to overclock but it's sloooooooooow

Posted by: JwY

Well, is it only Java that's slow or everything?

Posted by: babooza69

pretty much anything gaming related (java and SNES) is really slow. other programs aren't really slow because well...they don't really do anything (there is nothing really to load or lag in comparison with games)

Delete all emails in your inboxes on the phone. Then go to the Windows folder and find the Messaging folder and delete all the attachments. Then go to your email and go to the settings and select, "save attachments to storage card" in your email settings. Then sync to get your emails back. Soft reset and see what your memory looks like.

That freed up a lot of space on my Wifes MDA. Also, on my phone I noticed that the attachments weren't being deleated when I deleated the email. I had stuff in there for years.

Or if your brave you can flash it with a the HTC Herald ROM over at XDA-Developers.com on on the wiki boards. T-Mobile puts a lot of junk on their ROMS.

google omapclockplus to overclock it. makes a big difference in just processing power, but not free space and the likes
