n93 stuck on start up screen

I recently obtained a used n93 from the folks at forum.nokia (nokia's web site for developers) for an article writing project.

I am having a problem where, even though the phone starts up fine it never gets past the Nokia start up screen. If I press any button on the phone it plays a beep but does nothing else. I cannot go to any menu or phone feature. I only see the start up screen.

The screen saver feature seems to work. After a period of time the screen goes dim and displays the time and other information. However, I am unable to get the phone to do anything else. It seems like the phone is locked somehow.

I thought I would ask here first before going back to the folks at forum.nokia, in case there is an easy fix. Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks for your response.

Can you explain this or perhaps provide a link to documentation on this? I am not sure what you mean by "fw" and "nsu".

fw = firmware

nsu = nokia software update i think?

ok, I am unable to run the nokia software update tool, because the computer does not recognize the Nokia device over USB. (I've tried two different USB cables, both of which work on another Nokia device.)

Is there some way to reset the device from the device itself (like a hard reset on a Palm computer), or is it only possible to use the PC desktop software through USB to update the device?

Thanks for any help.

well it seems that the problem was something to do with the back panel that lifts off to hold batter and SIM. If I removed the back panel then the phone starts fine. Maybe the panel is affecting the battery or SIM carriage alignment.

Thanks for the help though.
