iPhone headphones: how does the mic work?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I guess this could apply to all headset/mic combos but ....

How is the iPhone headset picking up the microphone information and sending it to the iPhone?

How is the audio information technically transmitted to the iPhone? Does that mean that iPhone has some sort of chip to process information in the reverse? Does that mean the headphone port could hypothetically be used as a microphone port also like the iPods?

Thanks for any help

Walking on a windy day, things are painful, but in a normal, controlled setting they're good and on par with any headset/mic combo

i also found out by mistake that you can use the standard ipod headphones for your iphone and it works decent if you are in a quite room. i didnt realize i had used the wrong headphones last wek when talking with someone until way into the conversation.

The plug for the included headphones has 4 contacts, rather than the usual 3 for stereo headphones. I assume the fourth contact is for the mic.

I could never get into the supplied Apple headphones, so I ended up purchasing the VModa Duo and they are so far a perfect addition to my iPhone.
