The Master of Multitasking: My P1i Review

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: shaolinmonk

The Master of Multitasking is here and it’s brought along the wifi and Cam too! My P1i Review.

My last UIQ review left off with “Where’s the wifi and cam?” That lovely device was the m600i. It’s almost been a year later and SE has rolled out the P1i. Has SE finally offered a solution that will bring back some respect to their smartphone lineup after the P990 fiasco? Read on to find out…

I’m my review I’ll draw comparisons against its predecessor the m600i and also match it up against some of the s60 devices. I’ve played with some windows and linux smartphones but they really don’t interest me so they’ll be excluded probably.

Build quality/design
The m600i was very plasticky but fairly solid… SE has upgraded the p1i with blends of rubber (back plate), glossy plastic (seems to be a trend right now) and aluminum metals. Quite frankly, I love the feel of it. Kinda feels like that HTC S620 (or is it the 630?).

So far I’ve experienced no creaks, wobbles or loose battery covers. This device finally feels like a premium product. For most people though I think it’ll look like a glorified calculator. The use of black, silver and red makes it quite attractive in a sophisticated way though imo.

SE has also improved the jog dial…. it’s still 3-way but the hump that protects the wheel has been removed and that makes the scroll much more pleasant now. It glides along smoother and doesn’t feel stiff like the m600i before. The p990i uses a nice big wheel but SE had decided to not incorporate that into the p1i probably due trying to minimize the size. It’s nice to see SE listening or at least realizing faults and addressing them.

The memory card slot is located on the side and is hot-swap. The P1i uses the traditional SE dual-front look as it features a 3.2 cam with AF and dual led lights. No nasty k800/790 hunchback here folks the camera sits nice and flush but sadly there is no lens protector. The glass protecting the lens looks easy to clean though and seems like it’s made with a scratching resistant material.

The keypad keeps the m600’s unique design and I find it quite easy to use. There’s a bit of a learning curve I’d say (or comfort zone). I remember hating it when I first used the m600i.. But now texting with it is a breeze. I can use one hand or two but it’s a little hard when driving lol.

SE has also added a service light at the bottom of the phone… an odd place to put it but it’s still useful… you get various updates from the light…I.e.: it flashes and keeps flashing if you have unread messages.

Voice quality and reception

Taken from m600i review
“Well SE decided to leave out the 850 and edge so it obviously will not appeal to the North America 850 freaks. It’s triband with 3g. So far I’d have to say the RF is solid on this phone. The bars fluctuate like crazy (typical SE style) but it seems to have solid RF on the 1900 channel. I’ve noticed that triband with 3g generally have pretty strong antennas. (The v3x, the k608i, w900i and sharp 903sh all rock solid in RF. I don’t go through any intense testing but so far where I’ve been it’s been fine.

Voice quality is excellent, has a better balance in tones compared to my w810i. Earpiece is fairly loud. Paired perfectly with my jx-10 and seems to give the general performance as most of my SE phones.”

Yep everything is pretty much the same in the audio/rf department if anything it’s gotten better (could be the network though)… but I’ll stick with it being pretty much the same….

It’s interesting that there has only been one SE smartphone with 850.. the p910a. Guess they’re not sold on North Americans forking over the cash. I honestly think it’ll bite them in the butt cause we’ve seen success in the nokia n95 and iphone… but then again I’m not crunching their P/L and we can’t base popularity strictly based on bitter Hofoers that need 850. LOL, SUCKA!

UI/screen/performance

There were a lot of complaints about the screen on the m600i, w950 and p990i. Mainly about it’s visibility in the sun. I can say this has been improved significantly. It’s not the best screen in the sun but it is very, very legible similar to k790/k800 but not quite as good as the n95 for example. The screen remains 262K, it’s quite vibrant and everything looks great on it. People have been harping on SE for not moving up to 1.6 MM colours… but I don’t see it as being an issue I prefer respectable battery life (cough, cough cheap shot at n95 I know, I know) I personally would rather have a higher resolution before more colors…. The n80 screen was fabulous minus it lacking brightness.

On a bright sunny day

Another chomp from the m600i review to get people up to speed
“I don’t know what it is about SE but the way these use icons and stuff really appeal to me. Even though they’re not using the best screens compared to others they certainly pack a nice wow factor.

Right way the shortcut bar on the bottom sticks out. It’s a SE version of apple’s dock I guess. Nice bubbly icons. They are preset but you can change to based on your preferences and customize to your liking to the apps of your choice.”

SE has modified their today screen. It’s like a blend of the p990i and m600i now. They’ve added 10 additional shortcuts and it’s quite a treat to use. The icons are a good size and easy to activate by simply using your fingers. The nice thing about SE touchscreens is you can drag your finger across to select things. Whereas on windows (I think they changed this with the touch) you can’t drag, you have to lift and touch, lift and touch to move around.

Main screen – you can switch the views from list to icon.. and everything moves pretty fast.

The biggest issue I think Power users today experience on their smartphones is the lack of operating memory; Ram. Ram has always been a problem for virtually every device I’ve played with until now. There’s nothing more annoying then having apps randomly close or constantly getting “memory full please close apps” prompts… I’ve seen this on s60, uiq and windows phones so I’m not picking on anyone in particular.

Multitasking – Look at all the apps running, no issues at all between switching and when you close them all it frees up a whooping ~20megs… lol that’s more operating memory available on a freshly booted n95. (in fairness nokia’s n76 is loaded with tons of ram… sadly the phone sucks.. but I think all the manufacturers are moving in this direction.)
I’ve got word, excel, powerpoint, webbrowser, agile messenger, a game (brother in arms great graphics), music player, tomtom and the list goes on and on.. and I’ve got about 30megs of free memory left lol.

Special thanks to Swissmanger pro… probably the best taskmanger I’ve ever used on any phone.

multitasking video –here’s a quick vid of the device at work switching through some of the apps. As you can see when everything is started switching is fast and seamless. Truly amazing and makes the smartphone experience wonderful and you can see why I’ve dubbed it the Master of Multitasking
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DU_8QB51FTY

People have also knocked this phone for it’s weaker processor (old) If you were to go head to head on starting apps with say a n95 you’ll notice that the p1i is slightly slower…. But honestly for me I rather wait a little longer to get all my apps running and have them never crash then to have it boot up faster only to be limited by the number of apps I use or to have them close due to memory errors. Obviously the best solution is to have both, but I’d choose more ram over processing speed for now.

Multimedia

Taken from my old m600i review
“The music player seems to be a toned down version of what we’ll be seeing in the w950i
The sound quality is on par with the current SE phones and supports a2dp.
The music list has to be refreshed now to find tracks but you can also apply a filter to sort out ringtones.”

Music – nothing has changed here.. still doesn’t read embedded album art from the mp3. But album art is supported you have to drop an jpeg file in the folder where the songs are. This of course means you would need to have all your music setup like this:
Artist>Album>Songs and jpeg for album art to work.

The filter is a brilliant idea.. I hate hearing ringtones in my music player. I personally think they should revamp this a bit and use the space better. Bigger buttons for stop, play etc.. and also some hotkeys on the keypad would be great.

Video, picture gallery etc..
The video player is pretty good, I was able to get it to play the usually HQ mp4’s I’ve used on the n95 etc.

The gallery is simple but works.. you can do slideshow with music and different transition effects. Not as fancy as the n series gallery… which I’ve actually gotten to like a lot. What I’d like to see is more display options.. View as list, thumbnails, details etc…(you can do it on the k790a SE!!!) For some reason the gallery only let’s the DCIM folder view as a thumbnail grid, any pictures outside of that folder set up as a thumbnail detail list.. which is quite frankly, annoying. I haven’t found a replacement gallery app… but if one comes out I’ll be the first to try it.

Camera- The m600i without a camera really sucked for me. I’m glad se has put a nice 3.2 cam into this device. The camera is decent I’ve had no challenges with it. It’s not as good as the k790a and it’s missing a real flash.. but nevertheless I’m quite happy

Pics – are all shot in automode, some are using macro and some are using flash.. EDIT.. about 10 secs to start up first.. after that 5 secs to startup from taskmanager... capture and display is about 4-5 secs to my 2 gig card at full res.. this is the only part where the phone can lag at times IMO.

Video recording has been bumped up a bit as well. It’s not the best but it’s a lot better then what SE was giving us before. The P1i records 15 frames, QVGA in 3gpp format. Nothing great when you compare it to the n93 or n95.. but hey at least I can make out people’s faces now.

I’ll try to attach a sample later.

Connectivity
What’s this? We’ve got wifi too now… SE is trying to spoiler us lol. Other smartphone users having been enjoying wifi for a while now so it’s nice to SE not entirely missing the boat. Yes there was the P990i… but meh that was the p990i. It’s B only but I’m not complaining.

Web – Opera 8.65 works pretty well, has a lot of settings (landscrape. Fit to screen etc) No flash support but soon I hope! The browser still isn’t as good as the s60 mainly cause it doesn’t seem to be as fast. Navigation on a normal view can be a little difficult to get use to.. I wish they could use the keypad as a dpad for navigation that would make this much better IMO.

I’ve also started experimenting with the new opera mini and think it’s great also.

Mail- Love the send screen… everything is there and you don’t have to drill into more and press send. Switching mailbox isn’t as good as s60 tab system though. Wish they’d incorporate that. Looks like UIQ hardscreen has that type of system (SEE RIZR Z8)

There is support for Blackberry connect and active exchange. I’ve used neither and don’t plan to start. But I do have my gmail setup. There’s an option to ALWAYS PUSH. But it doesn’t seem to work. I’m new to this email setup stuff. But you can set it to auto-retrive every minute. Which is essentially the same but may hit the battery harder as it’s always refreshing where as push is only using battery when you get mail. (I think that’s how it works)

isync- se has finally added apple isync support and it works great..

Agile – A great msn app… just thought I’d share. Fring is really good too..and does VOIP.

Bugs and Annoyances
I’ve had the phone for about a week now and honestly don’t have any major complaints. I’ve had 1 crash… the Bluetooth isync rebooted the phone… otherwise it’s been rock solid. The UI hasn’t changed much from before but it is slightly more polished. I think the UI still suffers from odd inconsistencies in the core apps and does have it’s quirks…
For example: You can use the delete key in the gallery but not in the file manager.
Also I’m still having network issues with SMS timestamps. The p1i like the m600i reports SMS inbox messages in GMT+/- time. So if it’s 9 now. My sms will tell me it’s 5 GMT time. Outgoing SMS, email, mms (in/out)and phone calls all report the right time though…

SE can you please also add Toronto to the location list… You idiots!

I forgot to mention battery life. Well it’s great.. It’s 1120 mah and I’m going about 1 ½ days, but on a heavy day it’ll always last till the night.

Just a quick comparison against a lovely n93i “superbrick” I happen to have lying around. And it really is a brick it died in the NSS updater lol.

Overall
Haven’t been this happy with a device for a while. It’s currently SE’s best attempt at offering a complete Smartphone solution. With the added ram it truly makes it one of the best out there imo cause everything now works as it should.

For some, they’ll feel shunned by SE again with no edge, 850mhz and HSPDA. It’s a loss for both really.. SE doesn’t get to make the sale and the Enduser misses out on a wonderful experience. Well that's it... FYI-grammer or spelling I'm not responsible for... i haven't even read it over yet lol enjoy!

My final words....
Its what computers have become - the new Sony Ericsson P1i

excellent review!!!!!!!!

by any chance can you post a pic of this next to one of your k790's? i'd like to see the thickness comparison so i get a better idea of the size.

thanks!!!

Excellent!

Opera mini browsing is so cool it's like iphone browsing with your finger

Posted by: Qwest905

i just move my thumb and i scroll the page

HOLLA on opera!!!

Posted by: Paul in SoCal

One of the only gripes I have with the M600i is the lack of message notification, which I see the P1 has. Kind of an odd location for it next to the port charger. Great write up, Shaolinmonk.

this sounds silly, but can I request a video of going from the home screen to creating and sending a text message?

and do you guys mean you can literally scroll down in the browser using your thumb anywhere on the screen?

Thanks for the in depth review

very good review, i might pick one up once it hits $480 or $500 it might replace my k790a but then if i need the edge for my laptop i'll switch sim. also has ne one tether the phone with a laptop and be able to go online?

Posted by: jlyq

Is there a Chinese language pack for this phone?

Posted by: maximus_arg

Nice review man, I have a question though, how fast is connection on wifi? Does it connect to every hotspot? (my n95 and e61 had problems connecting sometimes). I know it's 802.11b only, but is it as fast as a nokia s60 with wifi?

Cheers

could you not do the finger scrolling on the m600? I figured you would be able to as they are the same OS / phone (with P1 having more ram)

You can/do "finger scrolling" of some sorts on the P990. It's not so much the "flick" up/down, but for instance in contacts, you can finger scroll through the actual names without having to use the jog/hard keys/scroll bar.

just wanted to know from the guys/gals that bough the p1i did it come with a 512mb m2 card? cuz on the SE site it said it comes with it in the retail package. And plemix/x1387 sells their without the m2 card for a lower price. Idk if the m2 card that came with the phone has preloaded softwares on it.

Personally I was so excited to get this phone, but after a few days use I went back to my N95. SE has improved on a lot of the complaints like RAM and being able to see screen in the sunlight. The phone is very well designed and looks great! However, after using the N95 the phone feels slow. The camera pics are disappointing and so is the music playback.....It left me a little sad that SE has lost its touch with smartphones. The P900/910 were the best and most innovative of its time nothing could beat it, but Nokia's multimedia capabilities have finally caught up and IMO surpassed SE's. When I got the M600i I wanted a camera to make it a perfect phone and thought the keyboard design was brilliant. Than I got the P990i and thought it was too bulky. Now the P1 comes out and it has everything you could want except other's have already been there done that, so it feels a little old now. I will keep my P1 and wait for the 1st firmware upgrade to see if they improve the camera and the sound. I just hope the next P1 will come with a cybershot 5mpx and a 400mhz processor.

do you use a2dp? i prefer music quality on the p1i over the n95 by far wired or a2dp...

Posted by: Paul in SoCal

Download LCG Juekbox and I guarantee you won't miss any music player. It plays Ogg files which sound light years better than Mp3's (there's a ton of freeware software than can convert MP3 or CD's to Ogg). It has ZERO hiss, better eq, album art can be downloaded from the phone, songs stored on the M2's play right away with zero lag. Yes it's pricey at $24.95 but I am really REALLY impressed with it as my signature states.

Posted by: tkao2025

Yes I use both the wired headset and HBH-DS970 and for me the N95 sounds better. I can play with the Equalizers and it's so much louder than the P1i. The sound on the P1i sounds a little muffled to me. The Walkman phones sound better than the N95, but not the P1i IMO. Again it seems like the p1i was made so that it can do everything, but not everything the best. The music via A2DP just blew me away the first time I heard it on the N95.

How do you find the pic quality? I find on the P1i the pics come out overexposed and has too much noise. Wish they had put a cybershot in it.

I've never liked the megabass too much (too muffled as you say)...I'm not happy with the n95 music player at all. I mainly use a2dp nowadays and walk to work (about 25-30 mins of music.) The n95 (I've tried all the firmwares) had constant issues with a2dp. If i received a text the music would stop playing, the music player would constantly breakup cause of interference between my body. back pocket or bag means static on the n95, not as much break up with the p1i. from my experiences thus far.

My music is generally all acc/mp4 about 192.

The n95 is louder but that's about it....

in terms of camera it's not as good as my old k790 but it does the job. Yes there seems to be some over exposure...but doesn't bother me that much..
the n95 has the steriod oversaturation look which annoys me more...

i think of the p1i cam as a w810 cam which is probably why i'm satisfied...

I find that in the night (bars/clubs) the camera is better then the n95. (faster but more of less the same grainess)

the camera UI on the p1i is a lot better to use though, it remembers your settings and doesn't reset, faster to switch modes and adjust to conditions as well too.

Yes some good points. I agree that the A2DP breaks up when I recieve email and messages, but I'm wondering if that's because I use a SE Headset with my N95. Was thinking about getting a BH-500 to try out.

In terms of camera, yes the Nokia has the over saturation, but I find the pictures are clearer than on the P1i and I feel IMO it takes better shots. No doubt the K790 takes best pics right now until the K850i comes out. I also agree with you that the P1i seems to take less time to get into camera mode.

In general, I prefer the sound and pics out of my N95 over the P1i. Again I'm hoping future firmware will fix a lot of the problems or problems that I think exist.

ya it really is a tough call....If i had a choice i'd stick the n95 camera in the p1i. But that's not an option here so for me even though the n95 camera hardware is better i appriecate the SE solution more.

I expect the firmware to improve the camera but I don't expect it to ever be as good as the k790 or n95...

As for a2dp.... not sure about the reason i just hate the "bug" and don't want a wait around to find out or invest in another pair of a2dp headphones.

the biggest thing for me in the p1i is the ram.. i rather have older hardware than newer hardware that gives me a negative user experience...

and that, ladies and gentlemen, is how you have a civilized debate over two competing products on Howard Forum. Can we just copy that and put it as a sticky in the Apple Forum?

ok, so i just got mine.

for some reason it is nowhere near as fast as shoalin's. do i have to do anything to speed it up?

initial start up of an app is slow.. after eveything is loaded it's fast..because you're using the ram to swap between apps

Good review. I may have to try this after I skipped the P990 for obvious reasons.

if only the iphone could install tomtom .. like.. the p1i...

sorry .. i just hate that type of comment

Posted by: methodz

^^man, you sound like an iphone hater.

first of all, its not like i don't own the P1 and am in here bashing it. i actually own the product and listing some things i wish it had that i was previously used to like some of the people above. sorry if it doesn't fit your criteria for a suitable comment, but its not like you had to retaliate.

anyways, diggin the phone so far, but my reception in the house is not at full strength unlike the k810 when i had one. it erratically swings from 2 bars to 5 bars (full) but likes to hang around 3 bars. its wierd it is never steady. kind of a bummer as i was on a call and had to ask the caller to repeat themselves a few times.

thanks for the video shaolinmonk! i need to trick the gf into getting me one. i wish it had uma for tmo then my life would be complete - for now.

was wondering what the p1 was running on, data plan wise. last time i've used a smartphone was a p900. hoping to get back into the genre. im on tmo now and was planning on seeing if the p1 can run aim thru the sms plan.

saw that, but actually when i was on there a few days ago for some reason the prices were crossed out, greyed out and unclickable. besides was wondering if he got it from somewhere else.

thanks though.

tomtom uiq is available from the tomtom site...that's all i can say boys...

Posted by: hondaguy

gotta say that i am pleasantly surprised by the reception i am getting with this phone. rogers must really be improving their network as a phone without the 850 would never work at my house before, but does now. i have spent the last few days drving between pickering to mississauga and in and around toronto and the reception has been fine. i am sure that once i get into a building i will have problems, but so far so good.

i also really like opera mini beta on this device. when using a gprs connection for accessing google or hofo site the device is pretty quick. i was pleasantly surprised.

Posted by: methodz

great little app. but when not using wifi i cannot seem to get it to work under gprs. when it asks what "internet access point" what do you have selected. i believe i have it under "use active connection" and it wont connect.

my gprs and tzones works when this happens so i have a connection to the web, but agile will not recognize that.

Nice review. Thanks.

No Edge or 850mhz is sad though lol.

These should be banned in Canada as far as I'm concerned lol.

Makes the network look bad -_-;;

850 lol still don't need it. Go charge your n95 and let me know when you get exchange or bbc to work with it
the only thing that should be banned is that crippled n95 lol

Exchange works with it..

BBC, no, but you don't even use it so it's a moot point.

In terms of stability & reliability, you win this round.

In terms of coverage & connectivity, the P1i is weak.

Reminds me of a 7610a in fact lol

Posted by: razamataz

gave up my e61i for this and i havent looked back yet.. the size and camera alone make this thing a winner. add to that touch screen and a butt load of rom/ram and this thing rocks!

it's not about what i use... it's about the feature set that's available for usage...cause of it was then the n95 is completely moot cause i would be constantly trying to restart apps that shut down due to lack of ram.

you loved your 7610b... lol so i guess you're heartbroken you can't love a p1ib as well... it's ok..... there there... nokia will take care of you..."memory full please close programs"

lol don't mind us guys jp and i like to ***** at each other..

Is the P1 worth being used as a video/divx/mp4 video player? Will it handle most resolutions and bitrates?

no issues for me so far.. but.. i like to re-encode everything to mp4....

Hey Shaolinmonk I agree with you that the N95 needs more RAM, but I'm putting up the P1i for sale anyways after a couple of weeks. I find that what bothers me more is the slowness of opening up applications. The N95 also has a better camera IMO and with Exchange working, I find I have no need for the P1i now. What's great about the P1i is the keyboard....but too bad it's kind of slow.....Hope the next P-series will have a faster processor chip set.

Posted by: shaolinmonk

you find it slow even when swapping through via ram? ic an say tomtom starts up faster then the satnav on the n95 i had...the only thing i find slow on the p1i is the mailbox app.. cause it constantly does "refreshes"

lol i haven't restarted my p1i all week.. so every app i every use is already running... i guess this is why i never have slowdown issues nothing is every shutdown...

"and this thread has hit ... a new low"...

With the prices dropping the way they are, where do you think the bottom will be? If (somehow) it gets to $450 I will be out of excueses not to buy (although I am liking the P990 and the p1i doesn't improve on the UI gripes I have).

the p990i UI is different from the p1i is similar to the m600i..

anyway my 4 gig just came today.. time to load her up!

Posted by: manchuia

the UI gripes (I assume) are UIQ gripes. The bottom "toolbar" icons are fairly small making it annoying to press them with the thumb (like the voicemail icon, taskmanager, etc.)

aw... my friend i never use those icons... voicemail.. just press and hold one.. taskmanger has been replaced by swisspro which is a shortcut item.. i think of the toolbar as more of a status bar... those icons are on the top in m600 and p1i layouts...

Posted by: manchuia

well i have much to learn about the OS still. I think I might pick up a p1i though if the prices keep coming towards me in the lower income bracket.

Were you charged tax/customs?

Also did it come with any memory card?

The biggest gripe is that the UP arrow (P990i) or DOWN Arrow (M600/W950/P1i) button doesn't open that corresponding menu in the taskbar. The one that allows you to create New X, Start Connections, Change Volume, etc.

And yes I know you can get to connections via "MORE" as the right soft key.

-------------------

Some of the other niggles that I dislike on the P990 and I wonder if it has been fixed on the P1i.

Does the scrollwheel scroll through everything ? (i.e. will it scroll through the YES/NO buttons?)

Is there more consistency between the action that "scroll in" represents and "screen tap" and the "ok" button ?

How about hitting "S" or "A" for "save" or "accept" (just like you can with Y and N for "yes" and "no") ?

yep a lot of those little inconsistencies still exist some have been re-mapped and some are still the same... it is these oddities that can drive people crazy but i've pretty much gotten use to use scroll+touch for everything now...

i to wish you could scroll through all at times.. i think they should design it so you can do everything via scroll or everything via keypad like palm os...but seems they weren't thinking that way..they like the mix n match technique...

Hey Shaolinmonk, great review!!
Btw, have you(or anyone) been able to solve the problem with the sms timestamps?
and when you got a voicemail notification, did it show some boxes character?
thanks!!

Posted by: shaolinmonk

i think the timestamp issue is a compatability thing with rogers...

when i was roaming in the US a few weeks ago... the sms timestamps were right....

ya i get the voicemail text message thing..

Posted by: mookkoo

Really?!
I'm going to buffalo tomorrow, so i can probably try it out there,

Posted by: shwicf

Hi everyone,

just wanna make sure, i can't find any other way to select the left and right soft key? (other than using touch screen)? the jog dial only select the 'middle' one....

how far off are your timestamps?

mine were several hours off as well. i had to go to "time" and change the primary clock to my region. if i hadn't done that, it kept defaulting to "London, Grenwich" time even though when i set the phone up i set it up for Los Angeles. when i set the primary time to LA, all the timestamps corrected.

dunno if that was clear or not? it is kind of a wierd clock setup.

Shaolinmonk...where did you get your hand strap? How come mine doesnt come with it? . Does that come standard in every package? Anyone has the same strap?

i don't think the phone comes with a strap but its suppose to come with the pouch instead

Posted by: manchuia

I don't know if it came with a strap, but that looks like the same strap that comes with a p990i, so you can probably just use that.

Wow I just played with a P1i. I was surprised to find one in my local Sonystyle store here in Boston. Although... I don't think they even knew what it was. All the tag said was "SMART PHONE - $599 REDUCED FROM $699."

Anyway, I played with it for a good 20 minutes, trying out everything I wanted to. I couldn't get the store's wireless to connect so I couldn't try browsing but if it's anything like Opera on my N95 it should be fine.

The camera was much snappier than my N95, and viewing the picture that was just shot was so much easier and quicker on the P1i. I tried typing using the keyboard (my first time with this configuration) and I was kind of slow at the start but eventually I got pretty speedy. I think after a few days I'd be pretty fast with it. A lot of the menus and apps were initially slow to start up after the phone turned on (it was left off in the store for some reason) but after stuff was loaded in the RAM it was very quick. I did manage to crash it twice though... I think it was because of the messed up wireless and me trying to browse with it. I also crashed it looking at the connections settings (again I think it was the weird wireless in the store).

Anyway, the phone is very nice... I almost wanted to buy it right there in the store but then I remembered I could get it for much cheaper online. If only it had 850mhz and EDGE. WHY SE, WHY MUST YOU DO THIS TO NA CUSTOMERS??

Anyway here's a pic I took for fun: http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/...insonystore.jpg

Posted by: shwicf

do you notice that the camera settings doesn't save when application quits?? a firmware issue?

All my friends are showing off their animated wallpaper in front of me but my p1i can't do it

And finally, as a ex-treo user, i was hoping to get threaded sms style on p1, my msg folder is a big mess now compare to my 750

Which version of Tomtom did you use? (6.01 and 6.02)

Also did you install it directly onto the memory card and then insert the card into the phone. Or did you install it with the memory card in the phone via the included docking station?

Also without sounding silly how did you install it?

I am very greatful for you help and genuinely need it

while i cant speak for performance in your area, i can tell you that i use push email and it works great. i dont usually get large attachments, but for basic email it works very fast. the built in browser can handle the full version of this site (not the wap version) surprisingly well. i also downloaded the opera mini beta and it works great using only gprs and really well using wifi.

go to control panel
connections
mobile networks
in the search tab press the more button (bottom right corner) then choose gsm/3g networks
select gsm only
done
and you are done

Try downloading a trial of LCG Jukebox and see if the volume is better. I've been trying to find out if that'll help as well (since I don't have a P1i yet you can test for me! )

Anyway, you can dl the trial here: http://www.lonelycatgames.com/?app=lcgjukebox

u will not like the way how music player is setup. creating a playlist is hard. u have to select the tracks one by one, its unlike in the k790 like let say i have a folder in the m2 card called english music and i create a playlist called english and want that folder in the playlist, it won't let me do it.

I have it set to GSM only and I use T-mobile in Boston (I'm guessing you do as well from your info) and my GPRS works fine. When you tap the reception bars does it say "GPRS: Attached"?

Heard that the W960 is not being able to use the file names for MP3's, it only uses ID3 tags, that means a lot of work for me to do on my MP3 collection to make it useable on a W960

does the P1i support file names for MP3's ???

i swear the mobile store has like 4 stores in pmall. how much did u get it for?
i asked one of the stores at pmall 2 days ago they told me 510 without gps and 520 with gps? i dunno what dat means, but ya. 10$ extra for a gps receiver than ill definetely get that.

and ive heard from many people pacific mall phones are soo cheap because its refurbished..anyone can confirm that?

p1i does NOT have a GPS reciever built in. Now if they are giving you a personal GPS receiver for $10 .. awesome. Otherwise they probably / might mean that they will install GPS software on the p1i so it can use an optional GPS reciever

I cant belive that this fantastic phone does not have Call recording feature

Is there any chance to enable call recording.

Posted by: drgopoos

Dont expect call recording from a UIQ platform phone from SE. They have locked it really tight...
THis feature has been requested from the p800 days...

So which one is a better phone ? p1i or N95-3??? for music, email, phone calls, internet browsing

Although the specs state the phone can handle H.264, the phone has trouble with all of the videos I've encoded in the iPod spec. What gives? Anyone know the ideal bitrate for the phone?

What i'm missing most right now since upgrading from the w900 is the remote control. But all in all, it's a great phone.

Posted by: hunter1234

anyone having wifi problems with the p1i? it connects then it disconnects after a few seconds.

Posted by: drgopoos

Hunter, i think its a firmware issue. Try to reinstall the firmware and it might work properly...

Posted by: rafman1992

Anyone know some good modds(either to physically change the phone, or mess wit the firmware)? Ive had the phone for a while and have gotten comfortable with it enough to try modding it.

Posted by: drgopoos

rafman, this is symbian... it may to easy to crack into apple world but not symbian and even worse the UIQ.....
THe only reason why uiq platform has been so sluggish

Posted by: rafman1992

I gess we'll have to wait
