Text Messaging Memory...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I love everything about my iPhone except acouple of little things. 1 is the seemingly small Text message memory. I text a lot and seem to get the "Text Memory is full please delete" message in around 5-7 days. I don't mind deleting to free up space but it seems to fill up quickly.
Does anyone know how much memory is given to storing Text Messaging?
Do you think a firmware upgrade could expand it?
Will Apple expand it?

that sux dude...

haven't heard anything yet about firmware updates

you must really text alot, i have a ton of messages in there and never got that warning. its definitely possible to expand it via a software update, its a matter of just allocating more memory to the texting function. whether they will do that i dont know.

i got that too and for some reason i dont know my text message count.

but i loved that my 8525 never gave me that message...i had like over 3000 total messages and it never said full... but it did make my 8525 run a little slower.

Could they expand it? Yes. Will they? No. I also miss the ability to save more than 5 text messages, my BlackBerry kept like 6 months worth of texts with no problem.

Why do they even bother with having separate memory for text messages? My current phone has 17MB of memory but it can only hold 200 total text messages.

i never got that message and the most i had was about 4 convos open with about 5-15 messages in each.

but speaking of texts is there anyway to keep it from just popping up on the screen? that feature could really get me into some trouble or cause misunderstandings

There's a setting under phone I believe that will stop texts from appearing on the screen.

I had just over 4000 last month, and a lot of them are still on my iPhone, I have yet to see anything about memory being full.

I didn't say all of them were still on there, I have deleted some of them, but the largest of threaded text sections are still there. Since there is no way to count them, I can't be sure exactly how many are on there.

does anyone know how often the time stamp updates? I cant see a pattern.. or does anyone know what triggers the time stamp if its not a pattern

I love time stamping for every message. I would like that to be an option.

I started to text a lot more on my iPhone and will be dropping my unl texting sprint line and just use my iPhone.

I have never had that issue, but then again, I don't text that much anymore.

I love texting on the Iphone as well. The way the messages are layed out like conversations help me ALOT from forgetting what me and the other person were talking about, especially when its been 15+ minutes for a response. I would like to figure out the time stamp method, how it works.

I've gotten the SMS mailbox full message twice since getting my phone and I text a lot. It happens when I hit the SMS button on the home screen, a pop up box comes up saying that the SMS mailbox is almost full, and I should delete some messages. I dont know how much room is left when you get the "almost full" message because I deleted some as soon as that message comes up.

Two of my conversations were very long, taking a few minutes to scroll up to the top. I dont know how many messages...

What I'd really like is the option to delete all messages from all conversations say older than a month or something, rather than having to just clear an entire conversation even up to the latest message to free up room.

That would be awesome. I hate having to delete the whole convo. I would also like the ability to pic certain messages to delet, like my treo 750. Sometimes there are things I hate others seeing when I let them use my phone so I then have to clear the whole convo vs. just the part I don't want seen.

dam! I just got the "almost full" message! :X

I haven't gotten the message yet but i'm dreading it. I don't want to clear out entire conversations with a contact. There should be at least the option to delete each reply individually within a thread. And also the not so accurate time stamping is annoying me when i'm used to knowing before on previous phones the exact time for each incoming/outgoing SMS. Sometimes you just need to know how many minutes actually passed.

Well I typed it all up at http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html ~ Hope someone at Apple is reading it. Everyone should put in their SMS annoyances/enhancements too there, the more people the better.

I've run into the message a couple of times and hate the idea of having to delete the full conversation. I've got a few hundred text messages with different people and just want to delete some of the message, or maybe save them to a file on my computer. Otherwise, the storage is a lot better than the 50 text messages I could keep on my LG V.

Posted by: badtz

has this been changed in 1.0.2?

Posted by: noTe

Do they have a option where it just deletes the oldest message when it's full? I know my old Verizon V had that option which was nice.
