iPhone Yahoo! Mail Not True "Push"

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: davpel

I've become a bit obsessed with getting the mail client on the iPhone working in a more reliable manner and have now become convinced that the much-heralded Yahoo! "push" implementation which Jobs trumpted during his keynote is not actually a true "push" service at all (i.e. it doesn't use IMAP IDLE and apparently doesn't use P-IMAP as some have asserted here). Rather, I believe that the system which is actually in place is something similar to AUTD -- the quasi-push implementation utilized on pre-WM5 devices. My reasoning is based upon the following observation:

Whenever you perform a manual e-mail pull on the iPhone, it automatically pulls mail from ALL mail accounts which the user has created on the device. Currently, I have two accounts set up on my device: Yahoo! and Fastmail. I set the device to check for mail "manually" which is supposedly the correct setting for Yahoo! "push" and which, theoretically, should keep my Fastmail account dormant unless and until I do a manual sync of that account. However, what actually occurs when a new Yahoo! "push" message appears is that I also get any new messages which have been sent to my Fastmail account at the same time. Thus, it would appear that the receipt of a new message in the Yahoo! account triggers the phone (likely with a hidden SMS message) to perform a manual pull on the device, thereby pulling from all accounts.

This might explain why Yahoo! push is so damn buggy (I always hated AUTD and found it completely unreliable).

Any thoughts?

Edit:

Apparently, the fine folks over at Fastmail (say that ten times quickly) have come to the same conclusion. See http://www.fastmail.fm/docs/forum/index.html

This is very disheartening.

Whatever the reason, it flat out doesn't work. May as well consider it to be non-existent.

It certainly wasn't working this afternoon, so I finally just turned if off and have both of my POP3 e-mail accounts pulled manually from the server.

Oh well that's progress, two giant leaps forward, one step backward.

I'm having the same issue with Yahoo and Gmail. In addition, if I send an email from Gmail. I will receive the same email in my Gmail Inbox.

Did you turn off "Recent Mode?" That might help with Sent mail appearing in your inbox. Other than that, that's just a result of how POP works.

I tried turning off "recent mode" and it worked for a while. I didn't get a copy of my sent messages. But then after a week, I wasn't getting actual emails either. So I turned it back on.

Would this be a bad time to point out how well push email works on the BlackBerry?

Yes, I hate you.

Kidding!

Seriously though, I wonder why Apple went with Yahoo! for that instead of, say, building it into their .Mac service.

maybe because .mac requires a paid subscription ?

hence my suggestion in other threads that .mac should have been free with and iPhone plan! Write apple and plug the idea.

This may not work, but I've read that going into your yahoo account manually in your computer browser and deleting all the messages in the in-box, or moving them to another folder temporarily, will somehow get the email pushing again. I have no idea if this works because I don't use Yahoo mail.

Try this I deleated all over mail accounts except Yahoo, since doing this my push email has been working, for how long it will work I dont know, but I dont see this as a fix only a workaround...

Well, this is a problem with Gmail... it does the same thing on a POP email client (Thunderbird, Outlook Express)

I noticed yesterday that my Yahoo! account wouldn't send a picture. I have the Yahoo! account set as default, selected a picture and tried to send it to one of my other accounts that I have on the phone (I was away from home with no computer access), and it went through the gyrations, the little circle status thing did it's number for a few moments then... nothing. Nothing in the Sent folder... nothing came into my target account...

I switched my Gmail account to be the default mail account on the phone, and sent a picture... and it went through!

Anyway, I don't think that Yahoo! pushes email... the iPhone just kinda syncs with it when it checks for new messages. I like it because it doesn't put mail that I've sent into my inbox, and if I read a message on either the phone or webpage, it marks the other as read, as well. Those are adequate features for me!

push with yahoo mail on my iphone is working absolutely beautifully... i get my emails within 1-2 minutes of them being sent... no issues whatsoever...

(on the pc when accessing my yahoo mail i'm using the yahoo mail beta interface... not sure if that has an effect on how email is stored and processed on the server (and synced via imap to iphone) ... but who knows...)

peace

Most of the time I get mine within a few minutes also, but there are times where push is almost nonexistent.

I am curious, for the people who have it working - do you have more than 1 account setup?

i just sent my self a mail 10 min ago, i still haven't gotten it, maybe yahoo push doesn't work on t-mo.

Posted by: mrtrance

Ya I'm having similar problems with Tmo. I have sent email to my yahoo account from other accounts and I don't receive it on iphone. When I check my mail online it shows up there though. But it was working recently and pushing email. But now I have to go to mail and hit the update button before those emails show up. It seems to be hit or miss with the push thing. Is there a permanent fix so that push works all the time?? I only have one account setup on my iphone. Is it like checking every 30 or 1 hour? I was emails pushed within 1-2 minutes but nothing tonight. Any ideas guys???

Posted by: msk

i tried a few different things suggested on mac rumors, nothin worked:

yup - i have 2 yahoo accounts setup on my iphone... both work great... no issues (quick delivery - maybe once in a blue moon get a stray late email - but that's the extent.... works pretty flawlessly for me).

cheers

I'm using the 5minutes hack, use exchange server with imap, and its perfect except for the fact that unfortunately we dont have the calendar/ab sync.. (but thats not really mail related i s'ppose)...

Anyways, it works better than my E61 with activesync used to work... since the iphone is always going to fetch e-mail it doesnt just "lag" when there is some network problem like i was experiencing often on the e61... and i get an e-mail with an average of about 2.5mins delay, not more, so its just like push to me....

edit: before you all start hammering: i dont get a noticeable battery loss, and i dont go over my 1gb monthly allowed... in fact on the e61 there was no push over wifi, so im actually using LESS edge now! (and emails look like they should, not like on the e61/bb devices)

Posted by: Ipecac

So, other than the "bounty" post over at Hackintosh -- are there any other efforts to write a client that supports Imap?

For me, not having push (aka Chatteremail on the Treo) is a deal breaker...

Posted by: Roy

I dont really get the need for push e-mail like its a new fad or something... honestly, the 2.5minute average delay I have on any e-mail is more than liveable with to have the first decent email experience on a phone...

For once I have real e-mail, formatted as it should, on the cell phone... all other e-mail implementations, push or shmush were, to me, crap (in retrospect, that is...)

I'd never go back to a BB or Nokia or whatever *berry device out there until they can get at least this good in rendering e-mails as they should look, not all screwed up with no formatting, and stuff...

I'd gladly wait 10 minutes for e-mails correctly formatted rather than having push "raw text" to my phone...

I wish Apple would come out with the MS Exchange Direct Push integration, but until they do, I simply have my Exchange inbox forward all e-mail to my iPhone through a Yahoo e-mail account. I have three set up on my phone and one is nothing but e-mail forwarded from the office.

It's not great, because I cannot reply to clients without them seeing a Yahoo address as the sender, but I can at least monitor incoming e-mail for emergencies and calls that need to be returned.

Not a great solution, but all the other kick-*** features on the iPhone well outweigh the benefits of Exchange integration on my Blackberries and Dash.
