Nokia 6126 (E vs. G)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

If anyone knows the answer to this I would appreciate it.
I know that the 6126 is a Class 10 EDGE phone. The User manual states that it can display G for GPRS or E for EGPRS (EDGE over GPRS).

Why does it always just display G?? Does that mean its not operating on EDGE? Or is this just something that is screwy with the AT&T firmware ?

Baldi dont you have a razr v3xx? Just curious if you could compare the reception between the 6126 and the v3xx? Or if there is any differnce between the n75 and 6126 reception wise. I am really thinking about the 6126 to have as a backup with my w810 cause I am sick of dropped calls and garbling with 2 bars.

Seems to be pretty close. Really havent noticed that much of a difference in sound quality, clarity, etc.. The 6126 only uses a 4 bar system instead of the 5 that the V3xx uses so its hard to judge by that alone.

Sorry to hijack your thread. Well I know the v3xx gets praised as the best reception phone for ATT but I just dont want a Razr. I really like Nokias but the 6126 just seems to get so-so reviews on here and they seem hit or miss. That is why I wanted to know from you who have had both phones to compare. Well I might have to pull the trigger on the 6126 and give it a try.

I am a new ATT customer who just came from T-mobile (just a week ago!) and I have the same question...I got a 6126 and I am overall happy with it but I also only get the G and not the E...I also have an unlocked Sony Ericsson W810 and when I put on the new ATT sim card it displays the E for edge. Speed seem faster on the 810 too, but not by much. I am still deciding whether to keep the 6126 or not, so if anyone can answer this question, please do! Thanks!

im pretty sure it one of thoose phone that have g for gprs and edge. no seprate icon for edge data

You are correct, it will only show g even though it gets edge speed.

Try the samsung a717, it is much better than 6126 in every aspect, rf,battery, camera, speed, bigger screen, the only thing the 6126 has better is speaker volume, I have never heard a louder phone than the 6126,

Not all Nokias display the "E" when receiving EDGE. It is possible the 6126 is one of them.

I use an unlocked 6131 (very similar to the 6126) and it always shows the E when it's using EDGE.

Maybe it depends on the area you live in? I'm in San Jose, CA, EDGE seems to be on all the time.

I'd doubt the phone's internals would be that much different to a Cingular/AT&T branded 6126, so it's odd many folks are only seeing the G.

pje200: Nokia 6126/6131 has same size screen as the Samsung A717. I'd also bet the Samsung's 65k screen is not a match for the Nokia's "true-color" screen Still, I do wish this Nokia had 3G speed like the Samsung though!

I think it has to do with at&t's branding of the phone. For some reason all the at&t or cingular branded nokia's i've played with that have edge always display G for gprs or edge.

Also to baldilocks what happened to your V8 you didn't give it up already did you ?

I think its the AT&T branding since the OEM version shows the E symbol, as does the T-Mobile 6133:

This is a pic of the 6126 with the E symbol on the top, but with a T-Mobile SIM card in:

samsung a717 screen is 240x320.256k not 65k,and the a717 is actually alittle brighter, and bigger, a717 is 2.3 while the 6126 is 2.2.

Just got my 6126 yesterday and it has the G instead of E. My w810i always has E. I like the feel of the phone but I think my 810i gets slightly better reception in my office and can talk in a spot that the 6126 cant. Kinda dissapointed cause reception was the main reason I got the phone. Maybe one day I will find that ultimate reception phone.

I know what you mean. I got the 6131 after I was getting spotty reception with my SE. I thought Nokias were generally reception kings so I bought it. However, it got just about the same reception as my old SE. I was a little disappointed also. It doesn't get bad reception, just not as great as I thought it would be.

The old 6010 seems to get even better reception than the 6131/6126. Maybe you should check that out if you haven't already.

Yeah I tried a 6030 and it was about the same as both. I wonder if the 6010 is really any better than the 6030?

It might be. My SE z520 and Nokia 6131 break up during conversations in my room. One day, I used my dad's 6010 in my room though, and no break ups. Might wanna give it a try.

The 6010 is considered semi-legendary.

My unlocked 6131 displays E for Edge all the time whether tethering or surfing on the phone. And that is with only 1 or 2 bars of signal strength way out in the sticks.
