Originally posted by lgmayka I think it's obvious why people are disappointed, or even suspicious of Sprint's specs. phonescoop.com typically gleans a phone's specs from the authentic documents submitted to the FCC; and phonescoop.com says that the Sanyo 8100 has dual TFT displays and a 640x480 camera: http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?id=293 I suspect that Sprint's specs are simply incorrect; but if Sprint's specs are true, has the phone been deliberately "dumbed down" (to dual STNs and a 100Kpixel camera) *after* submission of documents to the FCC? I thought that would be illegal. |

Originally posted by Aurora My feelings on this phone, STN or TFT screen (doesn't matter) is that it's a great bargain. Just think: the 5150 was selling at it's starting price when it was phased out: I'd be willing to a Sanyo SPCS phone with or without camera any day! Why the big complaint/hassel? |

Originally posted by martianviking First, I completely agree that this phone is a great bargain. Any Sanyo clamshell with a color screen for $199 is a good deal (and for all those people who want a Vision-enabled 5150, it looks like you've got it). Plus a camera, regardless of how good it is? Yes, it's a great deal. Even without the camera altogether, it'd be a great deal. But, I have to disagree with you on the TFT/STN thing. After having owned color-screen phones with both STN and TFT screens, I can tell you that there is a huge difference in the experience. Staring at an STN screen after getting used to a TFT screen will really make you appreciate TFT. That is all. (And it's a moot point anyway since it would appear that it is TFT after all). This is the Sprint phone to buy for anyone out there who's shopping right now. |
I've never been able to tell a difference between STN and TFT because I haven't held up two different phones to compare them.

Originally posted by morris All; If you check Phonescoop, you'll notice that as of a few days ago they had updated their specs to match those on the unpublished Sprint page. More importantly, my corporate Sprint PCS rep shared an internal email with the new specs as well. Unfortunately, this seems to be one of those cases of something being too good to be true. While the phone is no smaller than the 5300, it is still marginally lighter. To me though, it is still unacceptably thick, so perhaps the A600 come early June??? |

. This same debate was around when the 5300 1st hit the scene.

Originally posted by jaggrey It's a speaker for the ringer. That's all. Here come the rumors again....before the 5300 dropped I heard everything from speakerphone to an exhaust fan! :laughs: |

Originally posted by sprintpcsuser Ok...here's my question. If that's a speaker for the ringer, then how come the ringer isn't too loud? According to somebodys review...They commented that the ringer was very soft. |

Originally posted by Jowe11 I'm not going to claim that I'm one of those lucky people that have been able to test or use the 8100 and BS the whole way, but if it's anything like the other two Sanyo phones that I have owned (4900, 5300), and I don't know why it wouldn't be, then I would love to have it. I was very pleased with the performance of the 5300, and the ringer volume was never too soft for me. |

Originally posted by Jowe11 Oh, Does anyone know if the 8100 will have a feature like the LG 5350 had, the "monitoring" feature? It was kind of like a speaker-phone. |

Originally posted by vissionare Its a little shorter. It is not thinner. At least the 5300 is in porportion. The 8100 would look like a sasuage. It should lose the sleek look because it shurk and its still as fat as the 5300. Think about it. As for the camera that cool any one is fine. We are talking about the size only. Like the pros said a long time ago. Its a step down from the 5300. Its not really a replacement. Like I said before I could have had the 8100 in the 5300 form a long time ago and I think I would be feeling much better than getting upset from waiting for nothing special but a discount. |

Originally posted by Kieran McShane I'm not so sure I would call the 8100 a "step down", although this is, admittedly, a purely subjective appraisal. I really like the 5300, but every time I open one, it feels poorly balanced and a bit top heavy to me. I tend to think the flash isn't really very functional as in darkness one needs to be within 2-3 feet for the flash to illuminate the subject well, and this is from a friend that owns and loves his trusty 5300. Personally, I don't need (or want) all the bells and whistles that the 5300 comes equipped with. The 8100 seems to have the features I want in a cell phone that is somewhat smaller (in "height") and at a terrific price. It may be a "step down for some"... but for others, it may well turn out to be a dependable workhorse cellphone with a slightly smaller form and more in tune with the purchasers needs. In short, for some, the 5300 might be a bit "extravagant" and a case of "overkill"... but like I said, it's all rather subjective I suppose. All this said, the 5300 is a terrific piece of technology appealing to a particular market, and the 8100 will, I expect, appeal to it's own particular market, close to, but a bit different from the 5300's purchasers. I'm just glad we have the choices we have. Of course, In June, the LG VX6000 comes out! Another damn nice phone! I've been pretty impressed with LG phones, and so have many others, as CNET has NEVER had a 93% favorable opinion of a cellphone before the LG VX4400 (which is a bit too spartan for my wants). |
