Nokia 6133 - Unbranding / Debranding / Flashing

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi all... I'm new to the forum, and I apologize in advance if you've heard all of this before... but I got a little frustrated after page 20 or so of the official Nokia 6133b thread... so I figured I'd just post my questions here and hope someone can give me a direct answer, rather than link to a thread with 385,679,429,483,589 posts.

So here's the deal. I want to flash my Nokia 6133 (T-Mobile) so I can remove the limitations that Tmo has put on the phone. I also want to do it myself rather than send it off somewhere. Here are my questions:

1. What is the difference between 6133 and 6133b?

2. What is NSS?

3. What happens if I change the product code to 0535156?

4. If I put 6131 firmware on my 6133, what will I gain/lose? (I don't want any big surprises... like losing 6133-sepcific features or something).

5a. iUnlock.com shows the current latest version for 6133b to be 6.10. Is that a firmware version?

5b. What does "RM-##" mean? Is it the model of the phone? The firmware?

6. And the million dollar question... What do I specifically need to do to debrand the 6133?

It seems like there isn't much info on the 6133 out there... I've done a lot of searching on-line, and in these forums; but I never found a thread with a simple, concise summary of what to do. Is there anyone out there who could, in one post, explain the process for unbranding/debranding a 6133?

I deliberately titled this thread with redundant words in case someone in my position conducts a similar search. Hopefully they'll find this thread and save some time from reading 200+ pages of posts on the other one.

Thanks everyone!

P.S. I saw the following quote from "dckl" on page 211 of the officdial 6126 / 6133b thread:

"Hi everyone! I've read through most of this thread, and I think I've figured out how to unbrand a T-Mo 6133. As far as I can tell (correct me if I'm wrong), I use NSS to change the product code to 0535156 (6131 UK Product Code), and use the NSU to flash the FW, which should then give me generic 6131 Nokia FW? Is that right? Please fill me in on anything I'm missing."

But, I still don't feel like I know enough about the process to go through with it. I just figured I'd reference one of the things I found in case it helps anyone else save some time in looking for it.

Ha! I found it! "Nemesis Service Suite". That it? lol

And it worked, someone did. I'd love to see more responses to this as I have the same questions.

Well, I ended up getting it to work!!! I got a USB cable for the phone, plugged it into my computer, and used NSS to do the following:

-Changed product code to 0535156.
-Checked application access... still failed.
-Performed full factory reset via NSS.
-Checked app access... still failed.
-Performed second full factory reset via NSS.
-Power cycled phone.
-App access still failed.
-Performed phone factory reset.
-App access still failed.
-Can't get NSU to recognize phone.
-Changed product code BACK to original code (0537266).
-NSU still wouldn't recognize it.
-Performed full factory reset via NSS.
-Performed factory reset via phone.
-App access still failed.
-Turned phone off.
-Left it off for a minute or two (never done that before).
-When I tried to power back on, with USB cable still plugged in, XP told me it found new hardware (something about "Nokia ROM parent" or something). Said the hardware installation failed; phone still wasn't on.
-Tried powering it on again... same thing happened.
-Tried a third time, but continued to hold power button down.
-Suddenly the screen came on with a Nokia logo instead of T-Mobile!!!
-Then the Nokia animation showed up!!!
-Now, I run Opera Mini, and it asked me if I wanted to allow it network access!!!

So... I tried my best to remember every step I took... but I may have forgotten one. I honestly don't know *what* I did to fix this. The product code is back to its original! I don't understand... lol. Oh well... it works!

Best of luck to you. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll certainly do my best to help. Bottom line is... I did *NOT* have to change the firmware in order for application access to work.

Well, after reading the 200 or so page thread elsewhere in this forum you mentioned, and reading on other sites I downloaded NSS, looked it over then did a software update with NSU to see how that worked. It said "no update available to version 05.60 would you like to reinstall it anyway?" or something similar, which I did. Naturally the phone stayed exactly the same.Today I used NSS to change the product code to the default Nokia USA one "0532575 RM-126 6126 AMER-N US DEFAULT BLACK" then went to NSU and checked for an update. Now, when I checked it earlier it said version 05.60 as I mentioned but today it says 05.61 available, and I just completed that. The phone took the update just fine and the T-Mobile crap is gone! I've set full mp3s as my ringtone so that is fixed. The only differences I've found thus far is that the IM programs are gone and I see PTT settings. I would like to get the IM availability back although I haven't been using them since getting the phone. The games all seem to be there and working although I don't use them and I guess I'll use it today to see what other stuff is there or not. Anything else I should check to see if it's fully functional?

After read different threads on several forums, I decided to try to flash my 6133 to 6131.
First I couldn't get NSS to connect to my phone, so i figured out that my system is running on vista so i ran NSS in compatibility mode of xp and as an administrator. Then NSS connected just fine so I changed the product code to 0535156 for the 6131 and tried to NSU but it said no update available. So I did a full reset to factory settings on the phone thru NSS and power cycled the phone manually, It booted with the nokia startup and then the tmobile startup, i was then able set mp3s as a ringtone, the IM application was still there(but under the messages menu option), but the music player was gone. I didn't try to use opera mini sorry. I didn't see an email app(if i was suppose to). I tried to update using NSU but there still wasn't one.

So i thought i might have done something wrong for some strange reason and decided to flash back to the original version. i did that by using nss and changing the product code back to 0532575. I did another full factory reset through NSS, power cycled. This time it seemed to goback but not all the way, so I used NSU and did a update this but all of tmobile's crap back on as if it was fresh from the tmobile store.
i might try flashing to 6126 0532575, if do i'll let you know how it goes. sorry for the long msg

I may be wrong but I think your only option to debrand a t-mo 6133 is to go with the 6126 default code 0532075. It worked for me anyway. I do need to note that now that it's done the software updater says it can't update it anymore.

Posted by: neimad14

oh i will try to do the 0532075 nokia 6126, but i wonder what gets added/deleted when i change to 0532075.

Ditto on finally finding a helpful thread thanks.

Can i get a confirmation that the 6126 code is the only one that works with the 6133. Any limitations from this?

Posted by: gordievsky

I believe i successfully changed the code to 0532075 with NSS. But when I went to NSU I got message saying "no software updates available for your phone." It said my phone was the nokia 6133b RM-126.

Tips?

Posted by: Hpjunior

for some reason it's not working for me, i used NSS to change the code to 0532575 the 6126 version and when i bring up NSU it say phone not supported. i'm really lost could i use the 6131 Firmware code? or that one's is different because whats confusing me from trying the 6131 version is the RM-115&RM-126 and i have Nokia 6133 V05.60 RM-126. Any help would be very thankful.

Posted by: Machaira

I debranded mine without NSU. I tried changing the product code to 0535156 and doing an update, but NSU wouldn't recognize it... so I changed the product code back to its original (0537266), did a couple factory resets and power cycles, and boom!... debranded.

i did the same thing except that the whole gallery thing is gone not just music. i really want it back is there any way i can get it back

Posted by: gaww

I hve uses NSS to change to several different codes, but NSU does not recognize any of them have doe the factory re-sets - both with NSS and with the phone. Only managed to loose the gallery icon (gallery is still there - Hpjunior - just fetch it from the go to options and add it to the go to list).

I am wondering if Nokia has changed the updater to not only look at the product code, or is there something else that also has to be done?

I have downloaded and re-installed the updater from both the US and European websites also.

Posted by: powe6563

I'm having the same problem as Gaww. My NSU doesnt recognize my phone after changing the product code. I even changed it back and still no go. But I did have some success. The NSS has an option to Factory reset and that seems to have halfway debranded it. I can use MP3 ringtones and i have different apps like Presenter and PTT that weren't there before. I also have the issue of the Gallery being missing. I have to get to it via the Goto menu. Now I'm just trying to figure ou how to get the 6.10 sw version on the phone. I believe that will fix the missing menu issues. Anyone know how to do that? I have a copy of the 6.10 vers on my pc but I cant get my phone to see it as an update. It just sees it as a file and wont run it because it's .exe.

Oh I almost forgot too. I talked to Nokia Tech support when NSU stopped rec my phone and they said that since it was covered under warranty that I could send t in and they would flash it to the 6.10 vers for me! I of course did not tell them that I had changed the product code but it's back now and if Icant figure this out on my own I'll send it in. I'm just worried they'll get it and put the T-Mo sw back on it, when they realize it's a tMo phone.

Posted by: gaww

I may just live with it as-is after also doing the factory reset. It now has the email settings that i was most interested in, but have not been able to find a good source for the settings.

One guide said to set the access point to voicestream2, but I have only been able to get connected to T-Mobile data through voicestream3. So my Sonny Erricson PC card works great, but cannot get the POP email set up with T-Mobile (US) on this phone.

PS - the phone works almost as good as a modem in data packet mode as the PC card above - but would still like to get the email to work. I can get emails through a T-zone bookmark, but would perfer the POP access.

HELP! I used NSS to change the code on my phone, and successfully debranded it after a few factory resets. HOWEVER, I now cannot access the internet using my PDA through bluetooth. The phone itself sends/receives MMS and opera browser has access to the internet, however when I try to connect using my dell axim, the phone tries to connect and then states "susbscribe to packet data first". I have uploaded the internet settings from nokia's website and T-Mobile has sent me the same setting "over-air" but it still does the SAME THING!! Any ideas? I changes the access point to internet3.voicestream.com like the last post said, but it still doesn't work. Any ideas or maybe a write up on entering settings manually would be appreciated!

Posted by: gaww

You did not say if you were able to connect to T-Mobile with your Dell before you did the debranding. If not, then it could be that you do not have the necessary T-Mobile service. I am not sure if the $5.99 basic internet would work - I have the total internet package, which is a totally different service then the basic teathered T-Zones service.

Question - which code did you use and for which country ? Dd you jusr debrand, or did you load it with 6131 firmware ?

Posted by: Hpjunior

it's been working good for me so far now that i Factory reset it, but i'm having diffucutlties setting up email and streaming on t-mobile. i subscribe to the 5.99 plan, on streaming, it just says subscribe to packet data first.

Posted by: sd2649

yes, I have the "total internet" package. I believe it's $30 now, but I got it back when it was $15. Anywhoo, I got it working again. It ended up that the bluetooth has it's own access point setting now (it didn't before the debranding). So, I went into the bluetooth settings and created a new access point and made it point to internet2.voicestream.com and voila!!!! Thanks for the help. It just took some thinking and figuring that my problem had to be with the bluetooth, being everything else worked so well. This phone is SOOO much more useful debranded!

Posted by: gaww

Glad you got it working. I was not able to totally de-brand mine - what code did you use in NSS?

Posted by: troberts4

THanks to everyone who has posted. You guys saved my life.

I am new here but used this thread to debrand my phone using NSS while I was in Africa for the past 3 months. I used Opera mini, gmail, and google maps with no problem with an East African service provider... It was hard finding computers and if you did find them, they were SLOW.

I am now back in the USA and use t mobile and subscribe to t zones. However, now my gmail and google maps work, but opera mini doesn't, and I really fell in love with that app. I have had the internet settings sent to my phone and all that stuff, but it just doesn't work. I just wait for a while for it to load and it tells me it has timed out... Any help would be appreciated.

Posted by: sd2649

gaww, all I did to flash my phone, was do factory resets using NSS. I did a couple and power cycled the phone a few times and it just worked. Easiest modification to a device that I've ever done!!

My phone is not recognized by NSU, but I don't think I ever care to update the rom, it's perfect in its present state!

Posted by: dc5ss

what debrand did for you beside internet usage?

Posted by: frankiedood

Got it! I just reset my phone to factory settings once with NSS, restarted it (it took a while and it was pretty scary, I thought I broke the phone) and it gave me access to the application settings! Awesome!

Posted by: jediistar

Have you guys seen any improvement in battery life since the debrand? I have a 6133 sitting around here somewhere and I'd get it unlocked if I thought the battery life might improve once its debranded? Anyone notice a big increase?

Posted by: phattbam

looking into getting one of these and debranding it for daily flip phone.

Well, to be honest, My battery life is prob the same as it was before, but I have to charge it way more often because Java Apps use the battery way more quickly. I'm on Opera Mini all the time and it just drains the battery. The 6133 is a great phone but it's one fallback is the battery life for sure.

I'll be happy to take your battery if you dont use the phone though!

Congrats!

I remember that 5 seconds of pure terror when I saw the white screen after the reset too.

Posted by: jrsmooth

Well I have two unlocked AT&T 6126, tried 0537266 and 0535156 as product code with NSS, also use NSS to factory reset the phones, but NSU (v1.40EN) keep saying Phone is not supported (appearantly it did detected the phone).

Can anyone please help?!

PS, not sure if this is what you meant by "half way debrand" because I see the Nokia handshake upon powering the phone on, but still see the junk AT&T customization.

Thanks!

Posted by: reddragon72

doesn't rebranding kill the t-mobile fav5 thing though???

Posted by: anto

hi all,

I have a t-mobile branded 6133 and i'm trying to unbrand/debrand this so that gmail and google maps would work.

I'm not sure if anyone answered exactly how this is done?
what is the best way for me to do this? what is 'NSS'?
could anyone give me some pointers? any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Posted by: powe6563

Ok I've recvd several PM's about how I used NSS to "Debrand" my Nokia 6133. I'm a little tired of retyping it so I figured I'd post it here and maybe it will eventually become a sticky or something. Any way here goes:

First NSS or Nemesis Service Suite is a free beta software for use with Nokia BB5 phones. A google search by name should get you to a free download site. NSS is intended for use with flashing and programming boxes that are sold seperately, however unlike Phoenix and many other flashing programs NSS supports the abillity to connect directly to your phone via the data cable and make changes without the box or any other pricey equipment. PLEASE NOTE: NSS will not fully debrand or flash your phone using only the data cable connection. It will not unlock your phone from the Service Provider either. It can however be used to unlock many of the features that are blocked by your SP's Software, such as third party MP3 ringtones, Java Apps, and connection settings that are blocked by T-Mobile when they put their software on the phone. That being said lets get started...

WARNING: I don't know how the NSS debranding will effect the Fav 5 feature as I never had it on my phone to begin with. However it did change the menu style and navigation some. You can still get everything but some menu options like the gallery and calendar have to be added to the GoTo menu and accessed that way because they are no longer on the main menu grid. Paying for a professional debranding may prevent the menu from being changed, but I have heard that it will kill your Fav 5 program as that is a Tmobile SW only.

First you of course need to DL the NSS program and install it. Once installed connect the phone and open NSS. There will be a button on NSS that says "read phone" or something along those lines. (I did this a while back so my memory is a little foggy as to what all the buttons say but it should be enough to get you through it.) Use NSS to read the phone. There will be 3 tabs at the top of NSS one is the tools tab and one is the phone tab. Look at each tab and find the one where there is a spot on the right to display the product code. If the code is not displayed there is another read button in that tab as well. Just read the phone again and the code should pop up in the box along with some other information about the phone. MAKE SURE YOU WRITE DOWN THE ORIGINAL CODE FOR YOUR PHONE SO YOU CAN CHANGE IT BACK WHEN YOU'RE DONE. Now, check the box that says "enable" and then change the product code to that of an unbranded 6131. You can google for the right product code and I believe there are some posted in this forum. After the Product code is changed, go to the tools tab and select the Master Reset or Full Reset option to the right and hit ok. The phone screen will go blank white and look scary for a minute. This is normal. When the reset is done you may need to disconnect and restart the phone. It should now be reset to the factory settings and theme. It will still have the T-Mobile or AT&T theme and logos but it will also have Nokia's logo at start up (Hand Shake) and MP3 ringtones along with some other features should now be unlocked. Reconnect the phone and follow the process from the beginning to change the Product code back to the original. Now your phone is what I call partially or half way debranded. Java APP settings are now able to be changed to allow access where they used to be grayed out, but you will still need to load some settings onto your phone to allow Java Apps to access the web. There is a post by Ravi about a file he created called NokiaProv that you will need to install and set as the default configuration for JAVA APP's in order to be able to use them. You can get the file and learn more about that process from here.

After you load the PROV file and set it as default you will need to adjust the settings for your MMS amd TXT messaging. If you need to you can have those settings sent to the phone by your SP. Once that's done just go into the message settings and select the correct settings for each.

I think that about covers it. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Like I said Its been a while so those instructions may be a little bland, but I'm happy to look at it again if needed. I hope this helps!

So I have been trying to unlock my phone forever. And repeatedly failed until this post came along. Thanks! Here are a few additions (which might be very obvious.):

1. Your phone does not need to be unlocked by tmobile (or any other service4 provider, I imagine) to to this unlock.

2. After you change the code to 0535156 and do a factory reset, your phone might not go blank. mine didnt. Still I turned it off and for a minute or so. Also nss acted funny and gave me an error the first time. I turned off my phone and tried again and it worked.

3. Dont forget to change your phone's number back.

Great guide I am having a blast using homeade custom .mp3 tones.

I'm so glad people are finding this useful! I remember it took me a long time to track down enough information to get the job done. Hopefully this thread'll help others who are also having a hard time.

Your welcome! And thank you for the additions. I looked for forever for a way to enable the mp3 ringtones and java apps myself. That's why I posted it here. I figure there's always some poor schmuck looking for this info.

Can someone please guide me in the right direction of a how to guide on how to unlock the nokia 6133? Thank you very much

Posted by: galicia100

Sorry I am newbie to this how do I change the code and do the things u mentioned thanks for replying

Posted by: galicia100

it will unlock it so I can use any sms card from whatever company correct?

Posted by: gaww

The debranding will not unlock it. Depending where you live (and the policies of the local T-Mobile carrier), you can simply ask them to unlock it. I have done so a number of times - including my 6133. They text message an unlock code.

Posted by: kelpo55

I want to unlock the 6133 as well...

I have to wait 3 months though, new contract...

Is there a good website to pay for the unlocking that is reputable?

I am a bit worn out working with the iPhone the past few weeks...

Danke

Posted by: Cingular-sucks

Will this work with the AT&T nokia 6126 also? Will this remove all AT&T stuff & unlock the phone too?

If so, where do i get this software and cable from.... I'm new and unbranding phones.

I've also been desperately looking for a way to unlock my AT&T 6126 so I can use my T-Mobile SIM. I called AT&T and they said wait 90 days (NOT); and I even called T-Mobile and they said they can't unlock AT&T phones. Sooo.
Any software technique or reputable firm to pay to unlock this 6126 ?

Thanks in advance

i've heard you can fully flash 6133 with 6131 updated firmware if after you change the product code w/ NSS, use the nokia software updater.

Nice post, I will look into this...

Actually, this WAS true, but Nokia has since updated the NSU software so that no longer works. Now, even if you change your product code back to the original, NSU will no longer recognize your phone. I've spoken to Nokia about it (I just told them my NSU would not recognize the phone) and they have said that if I send it in they will flash it with the new SW for free. My phone is still under warranty though.

Am looking for info on how to unlock brand new Nokia 6133 T-Mobile cell...just bought it stateside but for use in Canada only, it's a replacement for one that was stolen...any ideas ... THANKYOU

theres info back one page on how to do some unlocking.

However, ANYONE LOOKING TO DO CUSTOM RINGTONES EASILY ON THE Nokia Tmoblie 6133 READ THIS!!!! - Simply convert the mp3 s to wma s using an audio conversion program. The phone totally allows both wmas and aacs to be set as ringtones!!

Posted by: serik

perhaps a stupid question but i assume you have to have a Nokia USB cable to connect the 6133 to NSS, correct?

Posted by: serik

ok, ive done a fatory reset on my phone and it gives me app access and mp3 rigntones, however it competley removed the music player app. Is there a way to restore the app, or perhaps another app java or otherwise i could use to play mp3s? Thanks

4 replies in a row, sorry. But i figured out that the music player isnt gone, you just have to add it to the list in the "Goto" section.

I'm trying to debrand a 6133, and so far I've tried doing a factory reset with NSS numerous times. I haven't really noticed many differences. I can set MP3s as ring-tones now, but there is still T-Mobile crap throughout the menus and at startup and shutdown. Does anyone have any advice on how to get the rest of the T-Mobile branding off the phone?

I partially debranded my Tmo 6133 using POWE6563's instructions (thanks!). However, now my organizer folder has disappeared and I cannot even access it through the "Go To" button. Is there any way to get it back?

Thanks,

Forgive me if you already tried this but sometimes it's the simplest answer... Have you gone to settings for the "GOTO" menu and selected organizer as one of the items to show up?

Ok guys I've been out for a while (got a MotoROKR now ) but unless there's been a breakthrough recently, the ONLY way to remove ALL T-Mobile branding from the phone is to completely flash it. It can be done at home with the proper equipment, but that equipment is expensive and not worth the money unless you plan on unlocking/debranding multiple phones. The other option is to send it off to one of the many companies that specialize in this. It usually takes around a week or two and costs less than $50.00 (US).

Hi POWE6563,

Unfortunately, the Organizer doesn't show up in the "Go To" menu.

Thanks again for all the help!

It's true that it takes a complete flash to *completely* remove all of T-Mobile's software from the phone; but it's not necessary. You can enable web access for java applications and MP3 ring tones simply by following the process I outline in an earlier post (all you need to spend money on is a USB data cable for $10).

Oh, by the way... you can't get the "Organizer" icon back; but everything that "Organizer" allowed you to access can be added to the "Go To" menu. The calculator, to-do list, notes, etc etc can all be added to the "Go To" menu. Therefore, although you lose the convenient "Organizer" menu icon, you don't lose any of the functionality of the phone; you just have to access it in a different way.

Good luck!

Kudos to the admin/moderators that keep these threads clean from moronic spammers. Much appreciated! (Got an e-mail notifying me of a new post; but it's not here... re-read the e-mail and it was nothing but a gazillion-page spam.)
