I'd love to see more responses to this as I have the same questions.

First I couldn't get NSS to connect to my phone, so i figured out that my system is running on vista so i ran NSS in compatibility mode of xp and as an administrator. Then NSS connected just fine so I changed the product code to 0535156 for the 6131 and tried to NSU but it said no update available. So I did a full reset to factory settings on the phone thru NSS and power cycled the phone manually, It booted with the nokia startup and then the tmobile startup, i was then able set mp3s as a ringtone, the IM application was still there(but under the messages menu option), but the music player was gone. I didn't try to use opera mini sorry. I didn't see an email app(if i was suppose to). I tried to update using NSU but there still wasn't one. So i thought i might have done something wrong for some strange reason and decided to flash back to the original version. i did that by using nss and changing the product code back to 0532575. I did another full factory reset through NSS, power cycled. This time it seemed to goback but not all the way, so I used NSU and did a update this but all of tmobile's crap back on as if it was fresh from the tmobile store. i might try flashing to 6126 0532575, if do i'll let you know how it goes. sorry for the long msg |

First NSS or Nemesis Service Suite is a free beta software for use with Nokia BB5 phones. A google search by name should get you to a free download site. NSS is intended for use with flashing and programming boxes that are sold seperately, however unlike Phoenix and many other flashing programs NSS supports the abillity to connect directly to your phone via the data cable and make changes without the box or any other pricey equipment. PLEASE NOTE: NSS will not fully debrand or flash your phone using only the data cable connection. It will not unlock your phone from the Service Provider either. It can however be used to unlock many of the features that are blocked by your SP's Software, such as third party MP3 ringtones, Java Apps, and connection settings that are blocked by T-Mobile when they put their software on the phone. That being said lets get started... WARNING: I don't know how the NSS debranding will effect the Fav 5 feature as I never had it on my phone to begin with. However it did change the menu style and navigation some. You can still get everything but some menu options like the gallery and calendar have to be added to the GoTo menu and accessed that way because they are no longer on the main menu grid. Paying for a professional debranding may prevent the menu from being changed, but I have heard that it will kill your Fav 5 program as that is a Tmobile SW only. First you of course need to DL the NSS program and install it. Once installed connect the phone and open NSS. There will be a button on NSS that says "read phone" or something along those lines. (I did this a while back so my memory is a little foggy as to what all the buttons say but it should be enough to get you through it.) Use NSS to read the phone. There will be 3 tabs at the top of NSS one is the tools tab and one is the phone tab. Look at each tab and find the one where there is a spot on the right to display the product code. If the code is not displayed there is another read button in that tab as well. Just read the phone again and the code should pop up in the box along with some other information about the phone. MAKE SURE YOU WRITE DOWN THE ORIGINAL CODE FOR YOUR PHONE SO YOU CAN CHANGE IT BACK WHEN YOU'RE DONE. Now, check the box that says "enable" and then change the product code to that of an unbranded 6131. You can google for the right product code and I believe there are some posted in this forum. After the Product code is changed, go to the tools tab and select the Master Reset or Full Reset option to the right and hit ok. The phone screen will go blank white and look scary for a minute. This is normal. When the reset is done you may need to disconnect and restart the phone. It should now be reset to the factory settings and theme. It will still have the T-Mobile or AT&T theme and logos but it will also have Nokia's logo at start up (Hand Shake) and MP3 ringtones along with some other features should now be unlocked. Reconnect the phone and follow the process from the beginning to change the Product code back to the original. Now your phone is what I call partially or half way debranded. Java APP settings are now able to be changed to allow access where they used to be grayed out, but you will still need to load some settings onto your phone to allow Java Apps to access the web. There is a post by Ravi about a file he created called NokiaProv that you will need to install and set as the default configuration for JAVA APP's in order to be able to use them. You can get the file and learn more about that process from here. After you load the PROV file and set it as default you will need to adjust the settings for your MMS amd TXT messaging. If you need to you can have those settings sent to the phone by your SP. Once that's done just go into the message settings and select the correct settings for each. I think that about covers it. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Like I said Its been a while so those instructions may be a little bland, but I'm happy to look at it again if needed. I hope this helps! |

1. Your phone does not need to be unlocked by tmobile (or any other service4 provider, I imagine) to to this unlock. 2. After you change the code to 0535156 and do a factory reset, your phone might not go blank. mine didnt. Still I turned it off and for a minute or so. Also nss acted funny and gave me an error the first time. I turned off my phone and tried again and it worked. 3. Dont forget to change your phone's number back. Great guide I am having a blast using homeade custom .mp3 tones. |
And thank you for the additions. I looked for forever for a way to enable the mp3 ringtones and java apps myself. That's why I posted it here. I figure there's always some poor schmuck looking for this info.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get the rest of the T-Mobile branding off the phone?
