TOUCH - My thoughts and Dissassembly Help

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi,

I've been using the TOUCH for a bit now and wanted to give my thoughts. I also had a question so please answer my question at the bottom of the post!

First off, im from an area where 850mhz is almost necessary. I've tried a bunch of SE's and other phones (high end) in this area and i would get the dreaded "emergency only" message in many areas and triband phones just would not cut it... But because I wanted to try the touch so bad, I gave it my final go. And let me tell you... reception is SPECTACULAR. Im not saying this is so for it being a triband phone, NO, the reception is great. I've never gotten the emergency calls only message, nor have i gotten the "no service" message. Well, the only time is when i was in the subway, thats with every phone. EDGE is always on as well.

The 200mhz processor seems like it would be a drawback, but the phone runs surprisingly smooth (maybe minus the scrolling of webpages). MUCH Smoother than your typical wm5 smartphones such as the Q or Blackjack. And I've even used the ETEN x500 with a monster processor, and performance doesnt seem to differ too much.

The only thing Im not really happy with is the "soft touch screen" and the miniature keyboard made for the stylus. Im using Phone Pad currently and it works fine. But can be a hassle at times. I have not tried the SPB keyboard yet, i may try it sometime. I wish they could've made the screen sorta like the iphone, using a hard glass instead of the soft plastic or whatever it is......................

WHICH leads me to my question for you all...

I have been getting some sort of build up under the screen. Not sure what it is. Looks gray and almost like a scratchy smear or something.

1. Does anyone know what it is, and how to get rid of it? Without sending it in for warranty (takes too long).

2. Does anyone know how to dissassemble the touch (especially the front face), so that i may possibly be able to clean it off.

3. Are housings available for this phone yet?

Thanks! (I think this is my 1st post by the way!)

To answer your first question, I don't have that at all. Did you try using a soft cloth, or maybe a slightly damped cloth?

Well, it appears to be Under the screen, on the opposite side of the screen, so I think i need to get under it somehow...

I unscewed the 3 torx screws behind the battery cover, but couldnt find a way to take the faceplate off. Well, i didnt try too hard because i didnt wanna break anything.

There have been a lot of screen issues, especially with permanent smudges, being talked about on xda. People have been sending back their Touch and getting a replacement from HTC. They aren't giving them a new phone, but rather fixing the current issue and sending it back free of charge.

You can find the Wasabi green housing I am sure. The 201 Mhz doesn't bother me as much as missing 3G.....

I have been switching back and forth on keyboards using happy tapping keyboard and pocket CM keyboard, I think I find myself going back to HTK full time now. I removed SPB as I find it worthless on this phone for some reason and I dislike phonepad too.

Welcome to HoFo....

How can you type on the touch's garbage virtual keyboard? Thats the whole reason why I don't like the phone.

well you can always use the transcriber and write on the screen it selff.. its a lot faster then using the stylus and poking those small keys

^ or you can add 3rd party kb, too me the best ones are the free ones, like phonepad, and happytapping kb.

I have the same "smudge issue" and it is definitely under the screen and not on it. I haven't seen the xda thread yet but I posted this in the stickie in the pocket pc forum and somone else said they had the same issue. I got mine used and the seller conveniently neglected to tell me of the issue. I was going to sell this as is used and pick up another but think I'll wait a bit. I have tried all of the keybds and have just settled on the HTC PhonePad but I mostly read messages and don't have to reply too much on the Touch.

When I bought my first touch (brand new), it had a smudge about the size of a quarter, it didn't bother me that much, but i exchanged it cause of another issuse, and the new one that I have doesn't have that problem at all.
