I've been searching a while to see if att will offer a discount/ price drop in the coming months with commitment. if so, when and how much?

No one will have any idea, and the few people that know would never tell because they are in very high places and can be easily tracked and sued.

Everyone is going to bs some stuff like they know, but no one knows for sure.

i guess it is a bit early to ask.. better start saving. one last question:

will the iphone's edge network be improved? im looking at comparisons on youtube and its not a very good sight.

thanks!

my guess is discount will only start happening after xmas... there's no way apple would drop the price right before the peak buying season - they'd be crazy (the iphone will be THE hot gift this season)... at least they never did in the past for ipods (the prices always dropped after the holidays, but never before)...

peace

I don't think there's going to be a price drop for a while, at least a year.

EDGE is at good at it is going to get. As for moving the handset sub. to the consumer this is a likely thing in the coming months given the sales, activation, and return history of the weeks following launch.

I expect to see a $200+ price move for new activations in 3-4 months. Don't know if it will hit before the US Holidays.

You might see a rebate if you buy a Mac (similar to the current back to school program).

Apple very RARELY drops prices. The only time you'll get a discount on an Apple product is if it's a refurb, open box sale, or an old model will be on sale to get rid of stock AFTER they have released a new model...

...The only time I can remember Apple dropping the price is when they dropped the price on the video iPod from $299 to $249...and when they did this, it was still a new model.

If you want a discount, check out eBay.

...drrjv also has the right idea too...in that apple might extend the iPod rebate to the iPhone at some point in the future...Buy a mac and get $150 off an iPhone.

If you want a discount get the best free phone at&t will give you, then buy the iphone for the normal price as an existing customer and sell the free phone on ebay. There is your discount.

Apple isn't going to cannibalize iPod sales like this. They are more likely to release a new cheaper iPhone lower end model than they are to make a significant price drop like that and force competition with the iPod line-up. Look at the way Apple has handled the iPod line-up. They tend to keep their price structures the same and just introduce new models instead of lowering prices very much. The iPod started at $399/$499 (for the low and higher capacity models respectively) in 2001, had a slight drop to $399/$449 in 2004 and then dropped to $299/$399 in 2005. Last year they finally dropped them to $249/$349. All along they added the shuffle, mini and nano models to create different price points. It would be difficult to be succesful in the mobile market with just one phone, you really need to spread out your line-up to appeal to different customers. This fall may be too soon for a new model or Apple might just surprise us but I doubt we will see a price cut in any way. It would be nice I admit but it would be a major departure from Apple's MO.

If what people say is true and Apple is getting a cut of AT&T's service for new customers I don't see Apple wanting to give up that chunk of money and AT&T isn't going to offer a $200 subsidy on a product they already have to pay Apple for.

Dropping the price really depends on demand, As long as the demand is high there's no reason to drop the price on the iPhone. Usually the price on the phone is dropped to also entice customers on other networks to come over to the exclusive provider. A number of people have already switched and paid any early termination charges so that's not really anything that would precipitate a change in the price either.

But overall, remember, it's not just a phone that you're getting, the size of the hard drive in the iPod portion is what helps the phone retain it's value. I really don't think you'd see it until the phone is opened to other providers as an enticement for you to choose their network.

The Royal Bank of Scotland is telling investors to expect higher capacity units and price drops on existing units in q4. They are also predicting 3g models with higher res screens in Spring 08.

So yes, there may be some price drops in a couple of months.

I think it's pretty safe to say any tech. product will get cheaper/better in 6-12 months. It happens with everything else, why wouldn't it happen with the iPhone as well?

If Apple stock drops much more it may be worth picking some up.

480x720 screens? That's a lot of pixels in a small space, if they aren't going to increase the size.

I am hoping to save a few bucks on my iPhone. Amazon is always good for no tax/free shipping but I do not forsee them carrying the iPhone for awhile (post christmas). The other option would be the Apple refurb section. I don't mind a refurb unit, so if Apple starts putting them up on their store I'd buy one.

as a vzw customer there are always new phones within a few months of my new phone. They already updated the chocolate ( i have the old one). well i hope to see some refurbed iphones soon...
i also had another chance to use one this time with edge. it wasn't as fast as wifi but not as slow as i thought. all the hoopla made it sound 56k. not the case.

thanks for the feedback
