iPhone earpiece broke - but not Speakerphone or Bluetooth!

My iPhone was charging and froze. I couldn't get it to un-freeze using any of the resets for 30 minutes (the phone has been perfect up to this point). So after it un-froze, the earpiece no longer works. I can use Speakerphone (which is complete junk anyway) and Bluetooth headsets, but I can't use it as a regular phone. I tried a system restore, no dice. My problem is that I just finished a 2600 mile road trip and the nearest Apple Store is half a day's drive from my vacation spot. Any suggestions or should I just swap it ASAP?

My suggestion would have been to restore the iphone software/firmware. Since you did that, yeah, swap it.

My earpiece went out in my phone. I had to swap it. I could hear over speakerphone, bluetooth, and the headphones, nothing else...I tried a restore with an Apple tech on the phone, didn't work. I would highly suggest swapping. Mine never froze or anything, one day, it just didn't work anymore.

Bummer! Thanks for sharing, I feel better about making the drive now. Oh well. I haven't had a super great experience so far, but the iPhone is so awesome I'm willing to wade through the problems. My wife's first iPhone had a fried SIM card, which we ended up swapping fairly easily. Now my earpiece is dead. AT&T has terrible reception inside all of the residental homes I've used it in, unless you're near a window. The voice quality, both from AT&T and the iPhone hardware, is not stellar. The joys of first-gen hardware

Did you by chance plug headphones into it immediately before the phone's earpiece stopped working?

There is a switch in the socket that turns off the earpeice and mic on the phone itself when that switch is tripped. A couple people have had that switch get stuck, which leaves the earpiece disabled.

Try inserting and removing your headphones a few times before you get restore or return happy!

Holy cow, it worked! You just saved me a 3-hour trip! The only thing I can think of is that I used a tape adapter in a U-haul truck, but the cable didn't fit. I had it on Speakerphone then so I wouldn't have noticed that the earpiece didn't work; I charged it up right after that, which is when it froze up for about a half-hour. Lesson learned: an ill-fitting headphone cable can trip the earpiece switch and cause it to be disabled until you can trip it again with a cable that fits to re-enable the earpiece. Thanks so much!
