Iphone 5 vs 7 series

how are people choosing whether they want a 7 or 5 series Iphone? Is this something you can ask for and what are the differences?

Posted by: pflau

Some people think the 7 series screens are prone to have tiny white dots..

My very small informal research shows 5 series screens tend to develoip dead spots a few weeks after you get them. The dead spot issue, unlike the white dots issue, is in the news.

I've visited two Apple stores and one ATT store, all the iPhones I was able to check had 7 series screens. That tells me the 5 series screen might no longer be used.

If you want to find/exchange for a 5 series, that is perfectly fine, just keep in mind you might end up getting a refurbished one.

ok.. then what about this report: http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/hughes/16483
this research concludes that the 5 series have brighter and better screens,, whereas the 7 series are defective!!!

Both mine have been "5s" including the new replacement from apple (sum wouldn't eject). No deadspots, great screen, I'm sure they still use the 5 panel.

My original had a 5 series screen, and it did indeed look better...

Okay first off, It's a BLOG entry. It's not a "report." And no real "research" was conducted. The blogger (Gina Hughes) cited a Computerworld article, which in turn relied on a forum poster on an Apple support forum for its "hard data." Hardly the stuff that's sceintifically valid by any stretch of the imagination, and not something I'd call "research."

Besides, I can point to people on the macrumors forum who are clamoring for 7-series screens and saying the 5-series are the defective ones. Who's right? Probably no one.

The blogger also didn't care to read page 2 of the Computerworld article, where the likely cause is quoted:

Quote:
Other iPhone owners, however, attributed the criticism to whiny buyers -- or dismissed it outright as in those users' heads. "The dots are normal," argued "IdleWanderlust" on MacRumors. "They are the sensors for the touch screen and must be there to function. Sometimes they are more noticeable than others but this is not a defect and it will be very surprising if Apple attempts to do anything since there is nothing wrong."

So can we quit relying on bloggers now as authoritative sources please? Really, this is getting ridiculous.

And for the record: I have a 7 series screen that I've compared to 5-series screens. No difference! So what gives there?

Mine is a 5 series. I bought it at an AT&T store about 2 weeks after launch. No dead spots on the touch, no bad pixels.

quoted for truth.

No visible differences between my series 7 and wife's series 5, tried several brightness levels, I even pulled out a magnifying glass and looked at them.

Just realized that if we were talking about a cheap, or free phone...or a RAZR...nobody would give a damn.

But...a stinkin' $600 iPhone... . Now, that's a different story!!! Grrrrrrrrrr...

My phone has a 7 series screen that I purchased two days after the launch date. It is bright and has not white dots. I assume that there are defective phones of both series. That is why we are getting conflicting reports. The bad phones are probably defective, no matter which series it is. I feel like we are all talking about BMWs (i.e., 5 series vs. 7 series).

Goto keypad in the phone app, and dial "*3001#12345#*" press "call" then select "versions"

My 8gb is a 7series and my wife's 4gb is a 5series. With brightness turned all the way up on both, mine looks noticeably better. The screen is sharper and the black is deeper. No white dots on either one.

Your 7 is sharper than your 5? Isn't that the complete opposite of what most people are reporting??

I'm beginning to believe this screen deal falls into the same category as "the 1.01 update increased my volume!" category. And that category is "I imagined the whole thing!"

Yes, that's what I said. If you read enough you'll see that the camps are split. At normal brightness (~half) the two are near-identical to my eyes.

Subjectivity is a funny thing...isn't it?

Posted by: BIGMERF

i have a 5 series and no probs on mines

Posted by: tuncer

i got my 7 series iphone on friday and the screen is gorgeous and nice and bright. That said, i do see the small white dots but they are almost unnoticeable and you really have to look close and on an angle to see them. Bottom line is that they don't detract me from enjoying the iphone.

I plan on going to the local apple store to compare mine to the ones apple has on display to see if i notice a difference.

I had the 5 series first, then when I got it replaced i ended up with the 7 series. The first phone was indeed brighter but I can live with the 7 series.
