How to: MP3 Ring tones on Branded SE Phones (Working!)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Vrexe

Just got your new shiny Rogers w580i? But wait! It won't allow you to use your own ring tone and it won't let you use .dm file in your ring tone folder.

Follow these steps and you'll be good to go!

What you need:
DRM Packager 1.35
MyPhoneExplorer

Creating a DRM'd MP3 file:
1. Install and open DRM Packager 1.35
2. Drag and drop the MP3 file into the window and click on Create DRM Content.

Importing MP3 ring tone:
1. Plug in your w580i. IMPORTANT: Choose Phone Mode
2. Open up MyPhoneExplorer.
3. On the left side, click on down arrow beside the word Files.
4. You will now see Memory Stick and Phone Memory on right side window.
IMPORTANT: Do not go into memory stick or phone memory
5. Drag and drop your .dm MP3 ring tone into the white window. After successfully transferring, you will not notice if it is done on your computer window.
6. Check on your phone. It will have a pop up saying you have transferred a music file, click yes to install it into the Music folder.
7. After that another pop up will come up asking you how to use it. In the list of options, choose "Ring tone" and you are done!

Keep in mind, if you try to install it in a ring tone folder, it will not work. You have to let the phone install the file in a folder for you.

Having said that, now your Rogers w580i is basically all set. You can have your own MP3 ring tone, AND you can play any MP3 music file without having to DRM them on Walkman player.

It should recognize the file extension. Did you put them in the right folder?

Posted by: Vrexe

w580i doesn't recognize the .dm file.

I tried with a theme in .dm extension put it in others folder and tried to install. There was no option to install. Only "send" option was available.

Same with MP3s in .dm extension. No other option except "send".

Posted by: FuturePilot

Put them in the "Ringtones" folder. Not the "Others" folder.

Posted by: sandini_power

or just drag the file into the root folder...
when u c both Phone Memory and Memory Card folders in phone mode
thts where u drag and the drop the .dm file

it auto puts the file for u when u do it this way

Posted by: Vrexe

No dice.

Where ever you put them, the phone will not auto read. I know how it works because I've done it many times on w810i. For some reason w580i won't do that.
You can easily find the file through file manager but it only has option of "send" not "use as".
The phone will not put any MP3 or .dm to the ring tone to choose from list either.

Cellery suggested in another post to try wma. Looks like it's blocked as well.

I think Rogers did a solid job crippling its phones, I'm also guessing this is just start. Future Rogers phones will be worse.

Update: Curious question, anyone know anything about .dcf extension?

Using v 1.35 which I think is the latest. Isn't your instruction referring to the upload button at the top of the menu list? Tried that, nothing. The phone itself doesn't read .dm file extension. I have w810i and have been successful with uploading .dm ringtones. So I know I'm doing things right.

I was just hoping maybe someone would know or find out some other way now with information gathered.

Posted by: FuturePilot

Are you sure you're putting them in the Ringtones folder? If you put them in the Others folder it will not work. I don't think just putting it in the root will work either. You have to put them in the appropriate folder.

Posted by: alpha tag

if not, then right-click the .dm file, and use upload... myphoneexplorer should add a context menu to files when ur phone is connected...

how come some w580 dont work?
I did my a few days ago and it worked perfectly

Not sure, it's weird. I know you and another person on this forum was able to get it working without a problem. And then there were a few others like me who still can't.

Can you tell us the settings you used for DRM packager? I've just used default forward-lock setting as I have been with w810i.

The weirdest thing is, Walkman and Rogers music player is allowing ANY mp3 (without DRM) file to be played, yet it won't read MP3 file as a ring tone.

Posted by: MleXxus

im having the same problem too, when i go into my phone by bluetooth i see that all the ringtones in the phone have a .dcf extension and no .dm. Could this be the problem?

anyone know how to convert with drm to .dcf?

thanks

** i have a rogers branded w580 **

Posted by: gatherer

this is the same problem I was having with my Z550 (which I made a post for further down) but I just tried alpha tag's method and it works, thanks alpha tag

Posted by: sandini_power

u plug ur w580 in then u choose phone mode
then u go into SE File Manger and click on My W580
Now u will c 2 folders Phone Mem and Mem card

Drag ur .dm file in here...where the two folders are
dont drag it into the folders but just drag it where u c the 2 folders, into tht window

Once u do tht ur phone will sudden move and it will transfer the .dm file
you will c it on ur phone screen
Now it will place the file in the Music folder for u automatically and ask you if u want to use it now..

If u get all tht you did it right

Posted by: Vrexe

You are a genius!

That works perfectly. I will update this post so people will know how to do it.

If it says cannot find the phone, it means you don't have the proper drivers installed.

I have Windows vista and it was able to install all the drivers for me. I think there were about 6 in total.

Posted by: Civi22

I installed the drivers, i can now get to the screen that shows the phone memory and memoery stick, after droping the drm file it goes about 1%(sometimes) and then it says "phone didnt answer"

Posted by: TheImpulse

sorry, a little off-topic but I didn't want to create a whole new thread on it;
what's the deal with the Rogers music player and the Walkman? like, what did rogers do to cripple it... do we still use the walkman? or did rogers somehow force you to use its own player? :O

Posted by: Civi22

you can still use the walkman, still not sure why they included two players.

please if someone could help me with my problem it would be greatly appresheated

Posted by: Vrexe

Walkman player is the standard MP3 player that comes with w580i. On my Rogers w810i, Rogers crippled it by not allowing it to play normal MP3 files. But on Rogers w580i, it plays normal MP3 file fine.

Not sure if you know about the music download service that Rogers has. Basically Rogers music player allows you to play Rogers music service files. For about $20 you get unlimited music download and you can play it on rogers music player for as long as you have their service.

About the problem with 1%. Not sure if I can help because I haven't seen this problem. Though I did see the error message pop up now and then, the file still successfully transferred to my phone. I would try again and basically ignore the message you get on computer. Check your phone. After a few seconds it will pop up with a message asking what to do with the file you downloaded.

Posted by: TheImpulse

thanks vrexe, you're very helpful

Posted by: MleXxus

they should sticky this thread, maybe future phone will need the same steps.

Posted by: InfernalAffairs

Hi there, I'm having some trouble with the connection:
After I connect the phone via USB, select phone mode and open up MyPhoneExplorer. when I click at the arrow beside "Files", I get an error msg saiding:
Obex Protocol could not be initialized!
OBEX Error: NO CARRIER

I tried restarting and uninstalling the software but no luck, if anyone can help it'll be great, thank you

What size is the file you are trying to transfer? If it is large, try a smaller file size and see if the same problem occurs.

Make sure you have all the drivers installed. Also make sure that your phone has reception with SIM inside.

Posted by: Civi22

the file size was 4,613 kb
do u think its to big? and what size was the 1 you uploaded

There shouldn't be such thing is too big of a file.

But I've had no error message whatsoever when uploading >3MB files. Most of my mp3 ringtones are 2mb to 2.5mb.

I've had error message like yours when uploading a 5.1mb file but it still uploaded fine and had the pop up message on my phone. You should ignore what goes on the computer but rather pay attention to what goes on your phone.

Posted by: alpha tag

make sure drivers are installed correctly.... should auto detect and install when plugged into the usb port.. install those drivers before using myphoneexplorer.... if u need the drivers, may have to grab them from pc suite

Posted by: Civi22

is there a program that i can use to trim my mp3 files? to maybe i can have a certain section of the song and the conver that? maybe it will work then

Edit: I got it to work but i used the SE PC Suite program to send the DRM file, Thanks a lot guys for helpin me out

Posted by: Civi22

thx guys if anyone gets the same error as me, i recomend using PC Suite

my computer isn't detecting my phone and I installed all the drivers that came with the suite! anyone know why it still says "phone not connected" ?

and i'm very sure that it's not the usb problem because when i go into "File Transfer Mode" , it can read whatever is in my memory only! (still does not detect phone memory)

is there any drivers in device manager that show up with a yellow question mark? when you install most software that communicates with the phone, it normally installs several device drivers. maybe one of them isn't installed correctly. have a look in Modems and Ports.

Posted by: dedalus1

might want to update the thread title to reflect that this only applies to Rogers phones. The AT&T f/w doesn't have these drm restrictions.

thanks for the quick reply!

the only driver with a question mark is my modem (but i don't need it)

other than that, all the drivers seem to be working however, it's detecting my phone as "Sony ericsson Device 616" --> should it be saying that?

Posted by: mmcnier

Rogers doesnt allow for your own content to be used as ringtones? I have been making my own MP3 tones with my own music for YEARS & have had no issues at all....

Posted by: Virus-D

Wow... I have a w580 and I didn't have any problems =/
MP3 drag drop to music folder bam, done.

I wasn't aware that locked phone included the lack of such features as stated above. Unlocked is the only way to go =)

Not necessarily. My W600i & my Z520a were both locked. AT&T/Cingular doesnt require you to buy their content. Heck, even my Moto handsets were totally customizable. Rogers just sounds like ring tone buttheads...

Posted by: kwokinator88

wow it detected my phone after a few restarts! thanks a lot for the help!!!

but the problem now is that when i click on "myphoneexplorer", it's a blank, there are no folders for "phone memory" and "memory card"...

Won't let me edit this thread anymore so I can't change any of the instructions or the title.

Use the file manager on the phone. It's the icon on the left, third from the top.

I had the same problem. I realized that my M2 card and the stupid plastic flap were kinda loose and the memory card wasn't "in" all the way. I hope this doesn't become a big problem.

Posted by: daveh_cdn

Am I missing something here? I just saved a section of an mp3 as a .wav file and put it on my memory card. I can select it as a ringtone and it works fine.

Why would I DRM / file explorer and all that trouble when I can just do this?

Posted by: mmcnier

You have to remember that generally .wav files are larger & lower in quality than an mp3. Unless you have it majorly compressed & set at a high quality rate, it will take up alot of space on your phone. My MP3 tones range from 200-500k. As for my videotones, they range from 700k-1.1mb, since it includes video playback.

Posted by: gordieranger

Vrexe's directs are perfectly correct. You just need to follow the directions properly. For those who are curious about working setting here what worked for me:

Sony Ericcson DRM packager 1.35, forward lock mode. The packager created .dm files which is correct. Navigate to "My Sony Ericcson 580" in explorer and drop the .dm file here, not in either of the two folders already there (memory stick and phone memory). The phone will acknowledge the transfer and ask is you want to use the file. choose ok and your new ringtone is done! Just follow the direction exactly as above - I tried a million ways before I re-read the instructions . . .

Posted by: vegass

I followed all of these steps, converted files to DM, etc. I can transfer the files exactly the way it says I should be able to, but when the message pops up on the phone saying "file stored in music folder on memory stick use now?" and I select yes, it STILL only gives me the option to use it as Message Alert or Alarm, and when I try to select Use as Ringtone it says "Info" then Cannot use this file. It does this whether I try it with a DM converted file or a MP3 file.
It seems other people can get it to work...whats going on? Im pissed. I had a w600 and it transferred easily and I could use MP3's no problem as ringtones. HELPPPP me! This phone came with the crappiest ringtones I think I've ever heard

(Im on At&T)

Posted by: zerocrash

vegass i had the same problem until i figure out it wasn't that AT&T was blocking mp3 ringtones but the fact that they have a filesize limit on their ringtones its like under 600kbs or something.
hope that helps

Posted by: vegass

Aww thank you so much! I'm gonna try cutting down the files and see what happens! It just sucks that you like one brand of phone, then they go and switch things up on u, just leave the good things alone! lol

Posted by: Vrexe

That's very interesting. I assume the rule of thumb would be make the mp3 about 30 seconds?

Posted by: zerocrash

yeah its about 30 secs. but then again there were some ringtones that just didn't cut to the filesize limit at 30secs so just decrease the kbps. I use GoldWave to cut up my ringtones if that helps.

Posted by: nastradamus

you do not need to use myphoneexplorer. You can navigate to the same place using windows explorer when your phone is in 'phone mode'. If you cannot get MPE working try this instead.

HOW TO:
1) click 'start'
2) click 'my computer'
3) double click 'sony ericsson file manager'
4) you should now see your phone. double click on the name of your phone.

you should now see two folders, "memory stick" and "phone memory".

5) drag and drop your .dm music files into THIS folder (not into "memory stick" or "phone memory")

Posted by: vegass

ZeroCrash---I used ur advice and YAY!! it totally worked! I had to go into my MP3 ringtone maker and cut down the files to about 20 seconds each on average, and it Worked perfect! Ur awesome. I seriously was pissed and you saved my day! lol Thanks!!!!! Now if only u could add a flash to my phone camera!!

Posted by: drunknm6nky

Alright I got it to work, I'll see if I can post or email some pics to go along with the step-by-step. BTW, MyPhoneExplorer does, it tricks the phone into thinking it's a legit ringtone that's being downloaded. The phone creates the 'rights' file for you. That's what the *.dcf stuff is. It's the media without the rights. Anyone wants pics can email me @ lord_cyphrus@hotmail.com and I'll send you what I've got. Sandini you're a freaking genius!

Posted by: Isoforce

just i a note too...that I got this working on a w580.

Actually the first time I connected through a usb it had some sync'ing issues. However, when I used BT it worked flawlessly and w/o a hitch. I didnt even have to cut the mp3...i used a full song...7 meg file and it worked.

Posted by: scyzor_tay

how come DRM Packager wont convert like over half the songs I put in it? Wtf is up with this its pissing me off.. I cant even chose My own songs? Anyone have this problem.. it doesnt even convert certain songs and all my songs are .mp3.. just some work and some dont!!!

Posted by: saltles

Guys Guys Guys! I have a Rogers Branded 580i. If you follow the instructions at the top of this page it will work! It works perfectly in fact. Please read and follow instuctions carfully. And don't forget to release the phone when you are done so you don't have trouble the next time!

Posted by: Baldilocks

I am going to sticky this thread.

Posted by: Tyrfing

Hey guys, after reading all these posts and having no success getting my own ringtone on the phone I figured out the problem.

If you have a w580i from AT&T the ringtones are limited to a certain file size. Either cutting the bit rate (what I did) or possibly picking a 20-30 second long clip is required.

So far i've got it to work on any mp3 file (have not tried wma yet), no DRM required.

I haven't found the max file size yet, 576KB was small enough but 592KB was too big. These were all songs I chopped the bit rate on, it was still full length.
My guess is 580KB or 590KB is the max.

I used the Disc2phone software Sony recommends and was in "File Transfer" mode.

The phone will also play any song reguardless of DRM, length, or size in the mp3 player.

Anyone know of a good free program to cut clips from a MP3?

edit: I just tried using MyphoneExplorer. You can also just drag and drop the appropriate sized songs into ANY folder on the phone (in phone mode) and it'll work as well.

Posted by: jokerspk678

u think u can help me not much ppl online right noe

Posted by: xxtolkienxx

i have tried as said to no prevail, i have even tried using drm set to forward lock method and it did all what it was suppose to, got msg on phone saying would you like to play msg, but set as ring tone still not highlighted, when i have drm set to the combined method as all say to do it places drm in other folder and just no pop up msg.

Posted by: xxtolkienxx

OK for you guys having problems doing the DRM way or have ATT do this and it WILL work..

Download AVR converter at www(dot)miksoft(dot)net/products/MobAmrCon14-setup(dot)zip
open and install but dont start yet. DL the update @ www(dot)miksoft(dot)net/products/amrUp15(dot)exe update install
Now open up the AVR converter.
Select WAVE/MP3 to AMR
then in first box click browse and find the mp3 you want
in second box click browse and select name and where to save it
then click drop down menu under select MR>select 12.2
then click convert now.

now find the .amr file you made and upload it to your phone via phone mode and my phone explorer
once phone receives avr it will pop up saying use now and you will have option to use as ring tone
its not cd quality but does do the job and will be full length

This was used to make a mp3 as a rington on a se w580i on att service

Posted by: grimtripper

Worked for me ! Thanks a million HOFO and OP! I was sure that I wouldn't be able to do this without DRM Packager 2.0 or something but it worked fine ! wheeeeeee

Posted by: newmannator

Thanks

This ringtone method works for a Fido Ericsson z310a as well

just one thing, when you go to accept the download on the phone, push the round ok button in the center, not the one on the left, like the phone screen suggests

Posted by: dgjr7

Thanks. It Works Fo Me. Thanks Again.

Posted by: Renfon

Worked fine for me as well, Thanks a lot

Posted by: saltles

Protected successfully means it worked! Go find drm folder and the file will be there!
usually the folder goes to where your music is stored!

Follow instructions and read "IMPORTANT" message!
Most of the work is done on your computer not your phone; just make sure when you plug it in you go to Phone Mode

I have a similar problem because my k850 takes 20secs to react/popup the "saved in memory card..........".
It says OBEX error 00: Phone didn't answer.

Even with the error the file still showed up in the phone and is usable.

Same here on my Rogers K850i... I thought it hadn't worked, then all of a sudden it appeared and I could use the song as a ring tone.

I'm happy that it works, but there's gotta be an easier way of going about this?

Posted by: feelyou

thank you very mutch

It works on my K850i branded to Rogers

Hihi...I was following the instructions below but then I don't see the 2 folders (phone mem and mem card) when I go into SE File Manager --> my w580. Does anybody know what's wrong? I also get the "OBEX Error" and I don't see the two folders when I use MyPhoneExplorer. Grr this is so frustrating! Did anybody encounter this problem as well? (and solve it?)

Thanks!!

If you don't want to deal with the DRM repacking, you can re-enable MP3 ringtone on Sony Ericsson phone.

Create a text file called Customize_Upgrade.xml and copy it (using XS++ or FAR Manager) to the directory tpa\preset\custom . The file should contain the following lines:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<customization>
<drm>
<settings>
<enable-ringtoneplayer-mp3>true</enable-ringtoneplayer-mp3>
<enable-ringtoneplayer-aac>true</enable-ringtoneplayer-aac>
</settings>
</drm>
</customization>

yay got it! many thanks to this tutorial

Posted by: acids7n

thanks again

Would this work with my Rogers K850I?

I've made the file, downloaded XS++, got it to connect to my phone, but I'm clueless as to what comes next...

Tried this on my AT&T w580i with no luck. Still can't use full mp3's as ringtones. The phone will allow small clips but not full songs. Guess I'll have to debrand the thing.

That's controlled by your ring duration, controlled by your network provider and indirectly by you.

where can i download this SE File manager??????/

Posted by: tehpwne

Ummm..I have problems installing the software at the beginning so the phone explorer cannot sense it. Any help?

Posted by: yomanhomes

how come i cant drag the .drm file from the packager to the myphoneexploer?
it doesnt let me

Posted by: JUSTSUMCHICK

O.k I have read over this whole thread, this is what is happening to me

I convert the mp3 to what I am supposed to, drop it in the white box under memory card and phone memory..

then I receive it on my phone and save it to music files. I then open it only to discover I can ONLY play it, the use ring tone option just says info.

SO I then tried to shorten them down to about 20 seconds using goldwave...I get the same problem.

I also tried that make a text file then copy it on Far Manager...but honestly I have no clue what the hell to do or how to copy it.

SO I still have my lovely phone with ****** ring tones. Any suggestions? PLease

Posted by: White Out

ugh. so ya.. this works great.. except when whenever i upload stuff i randomly get the error
'OBEX Errorcode: 00 - Phone didn't answer'

i can get some files in 100%, but then that will pop up and i have no idea why. thoughts?

Posted by: b_ingram

yea im having the same problem.....tupid rogers.......ive tried all the ways listed here and nuttin is workign so im unlocking my phoen to c if thats workx

Posted by: Jophen

I bealive its the .dm you have to go to Configuration > and select Forward-lock
(When you are converting ur mp3 to a .dm file!)

Posted by: Firespite

has anybody figured this out?

Posted by: tfp

not really sure why anyone is having issue's with this. i've put custom ringers on 2 of my se's (w810 and w580) without any issue's as well as on numerous friends se's (3 w300's 2 w580's 2 w810's and a k850) also without any issue's.

are the programs installed correctly? all the drivers installed for the phone's correctly? are you copying the drm file or the original mp3 file?

Posted by: Firespite

i'm copying the drm file...i believe the drivers are installed correctly...

Posted by: tfp

and you're using mpe, selecting files and then dragging the drm file into the big white empty window???

Posted by: Firespite

yep...I run into the same problems that everybody else described

Posted by: bhebiangel_17

k.. so i got everything set up..
my phone says its my ring tone..
but when ppl call me, there's a different sound that comes out..
and no i dnt have the "set ringtune" for the ppl calling me..
it SHOULD work perfectly fine cuz apparently its my phone's ringtone now.
but the sound is different.

help
