How IMPORTANT is GSM 850 support for AT&T? Anyone running without it?

There are SO MANY unlocked GSM phones to choose from, but it seems like only a handful of them support quadband which includes 850.
Some people tell me phones that lack 850 will still work on AT&T, but I might have trouble depending on where I live (I'm in Los Angeles).
Some tell me to avoid non-850 phones.
Can anyone give me an idea of what NOT having 850 will mean?
Anyone out there using non-850 phones care to share their experience?
Thanks!
