saw today on PC World that there are 4 versions of the Razr2. If i bought an unlocked version from one of the online retailers, which version would i be getting?

RAZR 2 V9m = Sprint/VZW (and any other CDMA carrier that wants it)
RAZR 2 V9 = at&t
RAZR 2 V8 = any GSM carrier

I believe there are two versions of the V9 (one with the Euro/Asian 2100MHz band for 3G and one with the 850MHz/1900MHz bands for 3G; the former is for Europe/Asia; the latter is headed to at&t). If you don't have 3G in your area, then the V8 is the one you want. Otherwise, get the V9 with the 850MHz/1900MHz bands for 3G. That said, you can buy the V8 now (unlocked and unbranded). T-Mobile is supposed to get the V8 also; at&t is getting the V9 (with the 850MHz/1900MHz for 3G). You need not worry about the V9m, because it's the CDMA version and headed to Sprint/VZW (and any other CDMA carrier that wants it).

Ok, if you're using at&t there are only 2 (possibly 3) versions of the Razr2:

Razr2 V8 (512MB) - Available now unlocked/unbranded, uses JUIX for it's OS, EDGE is the highest data standard it allows. Has 512MB of memory built-in - no expandability.
Razr2 V8 (2GB) - Supposedly available beginning in September with T-Mobile. Same as the 512MB version except it has 2GB of onboard memory.
Razr2 V9 - Available from at&t in September (and unlocked/unbranded a little before or a little after that), uses the newest build of the Synergy OS, HSDPA is the highest data standard it allows. Has 60MB of built-in memory with microSD expandability up to 2GB.

If you bought one today from an online retailer it would be the Razr2 V8 512MB.

Keri,
thanx for the advice. I will wait. i don't understand what an unbranded Razr2 V9 would do for me. It would cost more. the AT&T version is a 2 year contract.

what features would i get with unbranded?

thanx

You wouldn't have the irritating (in some people's opinions) Cellular video, at&t mall, and other at&t branded options on the phone (in the software or the hardware). But since this phone is synergy you can probably unbrand it easily anyway thus saving money by getting the at&t version on a 2yr. contract.

If it's unbranded it usually works better--YMMV, but that's been my experience. Take the N75, for example. I have used the at&t version and the unbranded version. With the unbranded version, I have network select; it lags less, because it lacks the carrier software, and I can turn off 3G (if I want). I currently use an unbranded RZR2 V8 and have no plans to buy the carrier version. Someone once said that freedom isn't free; we pay for it (in various ways). I don't mine paying for the freedom of no contract.
