any word on Minneapolis 3G? I heard that the bridge collapse did delay it. I don't know if that is true or not. Well hope they get 3G soon.

Posted by: natecarlson

Now that AT&T owns the proper spectrums, I've heard real soon now(tm).

After being in NYC last week and being spoiled by the 3G on my 8525, I can't wait to get it here.

oddly, on my 8525, I didn't notice much of a battery difference.. no complaints here.

Posted by: llkoola1

yeah well if anybody has any info post it on here.

I heard from a AT&T rep, Minneapolis 3G in October '07

Its always "In a month or two." I have been getting that since the beginning of the year!

Posted by: llkoola1

any updates about Minneapolis 3G, I know that my phone is switching from gprs and edge. Is that a sign of 3g?

Or maybe your phone is broke.

Posted by: formercanuck

Your id should be
'rm -rf /'

Posted by: llkoola1

is October still the date?

Posted by: Cloudscout

I've been told, "The Twin Cities market will go live with 3G in mid to late October." This seems to echo the information MNTwinsFan has.

Posted by: llkoola1

Well i'm ditching my Blackjack and getting a Pearl, once 3G rolls around I guess ill find some 3G device like the Duo.

Posted by: rm -rf

Do ya think that maybe if I bump this thread up to the top we'll get 3g sooner in Minneapolis?

Who gave you that date? Whenever I called, they said they had no clue. Not even the in-store reps knew a thing about it (yet they were all pushing 3G phones, of course).

Oh well, too bad I won't be able to enjoy it (going to school in NJ, and my smartphone doesn't support 3G).

Posted by: fmg9800

I keep hearing Oct 21st. Heard it from 2 reps at company stores.

Posted by: cve

I have cracked the code for the official date! You take today's date and add 14 to it. 3G will be live in Minneapolis on 10/25.

To determine when the city-wide wifi will be up and running, you take today's date and divide it by 0.

Posted by: Joel954

How many days now?

Posted by: teride

yeah...I'm sick of waiting for 3G in MPLS....

Posted by: fluxcap84

I am no longer anticipating 3G here in Minneapolis anytime soon.
If one morning I wake up and see the 3G icon on my phone, I'll have to call in sick to work, due to shock.

Posted by: petard

Another expected release day with no release.

Posted by: cve

They should wear T-Shirts at the stores that say "3G Tomorrow".

Posted by: Joel954

ha ha Good idea! Why don't they just announce that they will not offer 3G in the Twin Cities?

Posted by: Joel954

Is the new go-live date November 15th?

Posted by: haritia

Based on my observation, the go-live date is officially "sooner or later" (or maybe even never but I am an optimist)

Yes! I believe it a more accurate way of determining the go-live date.

Posted by: Cloudscout

The information I received was accurate at the time it was given but there have been delays. The initial target of "mid to late October" was revised today to "November 5th". Again, I believe this to be accurate but I also believe AT&T is capable of missing the target again.

I'm still annoyed that there isn't so much as a hint as to when we will see the Treo 750's WM6 upgrade which will be necessary to make full use of the 3G network anyway.

I've seen the G icon in my 8525 in Buffalo, intermittently...and I've also seen it as far west as Howard Lake, though it changed to E as I was passing through.

So...they're playing around with it...

How does that prove they are playing around with it? You getting a poor signal means 3G is on its way? How does that work? Now if you see 3G on your phone, well That's a different story...

Posted by: Evil_Ed

IF you read my note, it says "I've seen the G icon" indicating that there was an AT&T 3G presence up and operating around Buffalo, and again somewhere around Howard Lake. If 3G wasn't being tested, I wouldn't have seen the icon or signal strength, now would I? I'd say that's pretty conclusive proof that they're testing it and possibly preparing to deploy it sometime in the near future.

Posted by: Joel954

Sorry, apparently you don't realize what the "G" icon means, do you? It DOES NOT mean 3G! It means GPRS, which is the data service that is slower and older than Edge.

I dont think he got that memo.

Posted by: petard

Everyone is thinking that G means 3G. IT DOES NOT! 3G is represented by either a 3G, U, or H icon.

Posted by: Joel954

It's so obvious it's ridiculous!

Posted by: frostycakes

You guys should be getting it turned up soon, since us here in Denver just got ours a few days ago, and we were the only other major market with the "spectrum issues" besides you all...

Wonder what the delay is? Has the weather been bad up there lately or anything like that?

No its been perfectly fine. I guess they just don't want us to have it.

Weather has been fine. at&t has really dropped the bar(or ball) on this market.

Posted by: Cloudscout

If I remember correctly, we were one of the first AT&T markets to get GSM, weren't we? Kinda funny how we end up being one of the last to get 3G.

Posted by: petard

Its Here! Its Here! 3g Is Finally Here!!!!

Posted by: petard

Wirelessly posted (HTC Wizard (Cingular 8125) WM6: HTC-8900/1.2 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.6))

Pulling anywhere from 750-1100KBPs!
Can't wait to wake up and actually try it!

Posted by: Cloudscout

Yep. Just checked my email and noticed the "U" where the "G" usually is. Is this permanent or just a testing phase right now, though?

Posted by: Cloudscout

The "G" is back now. I should have known it would be too good to last.

Posted by: MobileServer

Confirmed a brief sighting of 3G and H data in Eden Prairie area.
I was only able to get 550k speed before it returned back to 'E' again.

Seeing '3G' and 'H' on my BlackJack for the first time was sweet.

Posted by: Cloudscout

I got the "U" again for a little while but now it's back to "G".

Now if they'd just release the WM6 upgrade I could see an "H" instead of a "U".

Posted by: cedar1

I'm happy to report that we got 3G in Apple Valley. It's been up since after midnight.

Posted by: Joel954

I have 3G in Burnsville right now. About 10 minutes south of the Mall of America.

Posted by: fluxcap84

Finally! woke up and saw the 3G icon on my 8525. amazing!

Posted by: superlftman

Woke up this morning to a U on my Treo 750. I live in Rosemount which is about 20 minutes south of Bloomington. Finally!!!!

Posted by: toddlermn

I'm downtown minneapolis, in the warehouse district (7:30am), and I have 3G on my blackjack right now! woohooo!!

about 411 kbit/sec on the mobile speed test

Posted by: wearytimes

it's in the northern suburbs too. my drive from roseville to downtown minneapolis (washington and marquette) was 3G the whole way with no handoffs.

Posted by: cve

DSL Reports Mobile Speed Test with 100K file Downtown:
Mobile speed test
unstable/too fast a result (2.377s) please choose a larger file

My 8525 is switching between H and 3G.

Posted by: scopingu

I can't believe it, but I've got 3G up in Forest Lake!!! What's next, WM6 on my Blackjack?

Posted by: Daynja

Flipped open my phone 15 minutes ago and saw the 3G icon for the first time in the minneapolis/st paul area. I am in st paul, and I hope it stays. I know there's been a lot of debate on voice quality, but my phone sucks in the minneapolis/st paul area. Everywhere else I go it sounds great. Maybe with 3G it will be beter?

This may give me an excuse for a data plan...

Posted by: MobileServer

Just called out my phone's test mode.
Found out that in Minneapolis, at&t is using 850Mhz frequency band.
Maybe it uses both but I was connected to the 850.
Maybe at&t has spectrum issue with 1900Mhz

Posted by: ceeceebee

3G (HSDPA) is up for sure in Minneapolis/St Paul DSL Reports speed as:

DOWNLOAD :1177 Kbs
UPNLD: 216 Kbs

Results with an Option GT 3.6 PCMCIA Model Card

wahoo!

Posted by: fmg9800

In Plymouth - at 707 kbit/sec. What connection are you guys using. Media Net or ISP? the connection for isp.cingular doesn't seem to work anymore. Is speed affected by what connection you use.

Posted by: ceeceebee

I'm getting my 1177Kbps on isp.cingular

Remember I'm on a PC Modem card, so there is little chance I'm being bound by the platform's ability to keep up (XP with 2Gig Core Duo). Your phone might not be able to run at full speed for such long bursts, just a thought.

Posted by: Joel954

What are they getting for speeds elsewhere, like Denver?

Posted by: netsyd

Denver is getting about the same ... anywhere from slightly better than EDGE on bad signal to 1.1M

And congrats guys - I know you've been waiting through it all just like Denver and a couple other places that should have launched over a year ago.

The coverage map showed the whole metro area.

Posted by: Nash1404

Anyone noticing hand offs from 3G to edge? I notice this in low signal areas in the metro, particularly indoors. I'm guessing 3G is running on the 1900mhz band which doesn't penetrate the walls as well as the 850mhz.

I can make very clear calls on 0-1 bars on 3G though which is very nice.
