i would love to know if were ever going to get 3g in this state this century

thanks

I too have been anxiously awaiting 3G here in WV..mainly in Charleston.

I spoke to a rep at the ATT store in Chaz Town Cetner and I told May 07, then July, and now its by end of year. According to the rep, there are three issues here:

1) TDMA is still on in a lot of places in WV. They're making a big push get people onto GSM by not replacing ANY TDMA hardware if it breaks. Once TDMA is out, they can use the spectrum for 3G.
2) With population density and regional size taken into consideration, WV has one of the country's largest EDGE deployments.. so they're holding off here as long as they can.
3) Our market. Lets face it, the number of subscribers in WV is a drop in the bucket when compared to the nationwide numbers.

Number one sounds plausible. Number two sounds like a total BS... although I ALWAYS have an EDGE signal in most places in WV. Number three I agree with. However, I think at LEAST Charleston should have 3G.

Now that Verizon bought up West Virginia Wireless (the employees are already switched over and their accessories in the store are just rebranded Verizon parts), I'm sure that ATT will push 3G with a REAL EVDO competitor in town.

Huntington Representative (Sales) just told me this area February 2008. I told her that I will wait until February and see

Posted by: edoublep

a rep told me that 3G is already in Charleston and currently being tested.. will be up end of 1st Q 08. This rollout will only be for data, HSDPA and voice will still be carried on GSM (damnit!). GSM coverage IS fantastic in Charleston, so maybe thats why they're not worried about it.

Is this even possible? I thought a phone could be either on GSM/GPRS/EDGE or UMTS voice/UMTS data/HSDPA, but not both at the same time. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Posted by: SHoTTa35

doesn't make sense. HSPDA runs off UTMS which is the upgrade to GSM so they can't limit the voice and just allow data. If UTMS is available the phone will use it and when you switch on data services it'll bump up to HSPDA if it's available.

3G is currently running on the 1900mhz band so unless they don't have that license in your area then that's the only thing i can think of. They way they are doing it now tho is keep GSM on 850 and 3G on 1900 os if you have a 3G phone it will jump to 3G when in a 3G area with good signal.

UMTS (with or without HSDPA) does both voice and data at the same time.
I.e. you can be on a call (lets assume using Bluetooth for logisitical purposes), and browsing the web at the same time on UMTS.

I was told by a rep here in Morgantown that the Motown/Fairmont/Clarksburg area will get 3G before the Charleston/Huntington area due to our proximity to DC and Pittsburgh. I dunno how true it is but so far at&t has built around 5-6 towers in and around Morgantown with more to come in the other two cities. I think it would be best to launch both Morgantown and Charleston/Huntington at the same time since the three cities are so important to the state's economy and such. I am very excited for it I figured I would have to wait years and years and its coming as early as this spring!

Posted by: edoublep

Charleston WV is still not 3G.. ive been told end of March, so we'll see.
I did however, get to use 3G voice when in NYC over the weekend and the difference in voice quality was ASTOUNDING. oh, and the data speeds were great too. one thing to note is the battery life on my Samsung a737 took a MAJOR hit. here on GSM, i can get 3-4 days of heavy phone / data use. In 3G, I had to charge my phone twice over a weekend, but that may be because I was playing with data a lot.

Expect this to be a fact of life once AT&T brings 3G online in your area.
Granted that a few already stated that their battery doesn't take a MAJOR hit, but my Treo 750 does when when I'm ripping through on 3G. 2-3 hrs is the max from a full charge my Treo 750 will live until I need to re-charge again.

Something random and some what exciting. I was watching TV with my roommate and was reading her a text I recieved from a mutual friend of ours and when I checked my phone again I had a "3G" next to my service indicator on my Tilt and I was flipping out I didn't know what to do. I had a 3G signal for a short bit tonight here in Morgantown. Its about to happen soon here. Anyone else seeing this occur in WV? I know Sprint users get the EV-DO to show up around Morgantown but it shows up so quickly its like a Bigfoot sighting. Before you know it, its gone. Makes me wonder how much longer I'll be waiting.

Theres nothing new in the northern panhandle around Wheeing...but that is promising news about your occasional 3G in Morgantown. Hopefully that means this area or region is close to a launch.

Posted by: just2584

I know it was the first time I've seen it since I got my Tilt. Dunno how flukey it is for that to happen as its been doing it with Sprint customers for the past couple months here switching between 1x and EV-DO. I hope its very soon it would be very awesome!

Posted by: MyPyle

the rep here in parkersburg said he wasn't allowed to say when it was coming because it keeps on changing. He also said that athens, oh has 3g which is true i checked on the coverage viewer. but then the installation crew went on to portsmith and then supposed to be coming to parkersburg. I dont know if this also cover marietta because i think marietta only has 850 coverage.

Posted by: MyPyle

I thought the TDMA is supposed to be shut down this month. I think that they should send all those tdma users left gsm equipment and just tell on this date your old cell phone wont work and you need to use this gsm equipment. Now i dont know about the rate plan but they shouldn't be trying to force them onto the current rate plans. but keep them on the old and take care of that later.

i just spoke with a rep in the Charleston Mall and he says that because of the CellularOne buyout, that Charleston/Huntington is now pushed back to end of 2nd quarter. UGH!!!!!!!!! I am ver much beginning to hate at&t. For so long I would tout the wonders of GSM, like better phones and global standards, but verizon and sprint are looking like real options since att wont get on the ball.

its just so frustrating, i mean really? crappy moto and lg flip phones are mostly all they carry. if you want a qwerty keyboard phone you have to buy a smartphone or the iphone. verizon and sprint are loaded with qwerty phones.

i really have to wonder if apple is pushing att to not release qwerty phones to urge everyone to buy a damned iphone.

i can only think of one phone att had before the iphone that was a qwerty, and was also no a smart phone either.

I was seeing some weird things last week in Morantown and Fairmont areas. Was hearing other peoples conversations on my cell phone and actually heard the same from several other AT&T customers in the area. I'm pretty confident they must be deploying 3G especially w/ the reports of people have the 3g indicators light on their phones.... Now if they could just make either a 3G Iphone or Blackberry I'll be set!

Posted by: just2584

I have noticed when I make calls here now I hear a loud ring and then a lighter and sounding further away ring. It is really odd but doesn't really hurt anything just odd. I haven't had the same problem icehouse has had yet. Yea I totally agree edoub at&t needs a phone like the Rumor that Sprint has. With the amount of teens getting phones they don't want a smart phone or Blackberry they normally want just a phone that has the QWERTY for texting and a camera and some want the music and CV. If we had an at&t version of the Rumor at my store they'd fly off our shelves. I also think that Apple is one that is really putting some hurt in the at&t lineup keeping hot phones away when they used to be the first with them. Like this mobile TV thing I think Apple is unhappy with it since the iPhone cannot support it thus there we go pushing back top phones that should have been out this month like the LG Prada phone which I think was called the Vu when it debuts with at&t. I'm still uncertain and not saying they are 100% to blame but I do think they are putting some hurt into the new lineup of phones in some way. This is just my opinion.

you know that you have mentioned it. things are pretty strange around here to. text messages being received later in the day. girlfriend telling me it just sounded like i through (wrong spelling i know) my phone accross the room. but i really havn't had any serious problems. so hopefully this is all due to the 3g network upgrades which hopefully will be online soon.

Posted by: edoublep

our AT&T rep for our office sent out an email to all of his customers stating that May of this year is the Charleston, WV rollout for 3G. he better not be pulling our chain.
FYI - Sprint is rolling out EVDO in Charleston in June, which apparently is a definite..so maybe AT&T is trying to one-up Sprint.

Posted by: kscwv

I started with at&t a week ago and the Main office in Morgantown said that the release of 3g would be end of 3rd quarter start of 4th. They seemed to be sure of this. Ntelos has sprint by the balls in this area, they (intelos) had no plans (as of 01/08) to upgrade from 1x to ev-do. They would have to upgrade for morgantown or sprint buy them out and upgrade and I dont see this happening.

Posted by: urmobilesky

Up north around Wheeling,WV the local stores are saying anytime now, so hopefully either this month or April. This area is just west of Washington,PA which has had 3G since October, and Wheeling is only a half hr west on I-70.

Posted by: kujars

I live in the freakin boonies in french creek, wv and they say 3G will come by the end of the year here. I'd expect you guys to get it sooner. But I have also had 3G sighting but they were in Elkins, WV. To the person who said they are starting to hate AT&T for buying out all these cellular ones just think about it...Most cellular ones charge an insane amount for roaming fees so by at&t buying them out you roam less and should recieve the savings later on. I was excited to see them buy out our local cell 1 cause now I can get something better than dialup for internet access at my home.

Posted by: kujars

oh BTW...I forgot to mention in the last post that I used to work for a sprint dealer and Sprint Rents Tower access from Ntelos PCS in WV. The reason Sprint has been dragging their feet on EVDO is related to Ntelos being slow about the deployment. Ntelos has been dumping a lot of money into expanding coverage instead of upgrading their current towers. In the last 2 years they've built new towers in Upshur county, and Cell Service doesn't get any better than theirs from morgantown all the way to the charleston. I've got good service from weston all the way to charleston. But I had to choice but to go with AT&T for my internet cause they are the only ones who will have high speed wireless data in my area as US Cellular is dragging their feet even worse than any other cell company I've seen.

The latest word in the Wheeling area is 3G launch is within a month, so hopefully any day now or by mid-April. Anyone heard something different for the northern panhandle launch?

Posted by: MyPyle

nope i havn't.

Posted by: icehousewvu

According to a sales guy at the Morgantown Mall (swallows Tablespoon of Salt) Morgantown is a year and half away from going 3G. Which is basically the opposite of what ive been told at the Corp Store over on Van Voorhis. He claims Charleston will go 3G first and didnt have anything to say about Wheeling.

Posted by: edoublep

That's what I keep hearing in Charleston. That Chaz and Huntington will go 3G first, then the rest of the state.. but who the heck knows. I think these reps just say this stuff to keep folks from switching (which is odd because Sprint/Verzion arent 3G yet). Does anyone know if Alltell or NTELOS is?

Posted by: kujars

Alltel is EVDO in kanawah county. It registers 1470kb/s with an average ping of 297ms in corridor G. Ntelos will be 3G by the end of the year which will also mean sprint is.

Posted by: kscwv

I dont think Ntelos is 3g, only AT&T/Cellone. GPRS is 3G and CDMA is EVDO.

Posted by: kujars

Oops. I used the wrong words. Ntelos is EVDO. My Bad

The cell site on top of the union building off Virginia Street is 3g ready. I used to work next to the site and caught the guys out there working on it a few weeks ago and they confirmed they were finishing the installation of 3g equipment to THAT site.

Thats cool. at&t is sure taking their sweet time in the Wheeling area with 3G. We got Verizon back in the fall. I hope they get on the ball, they got a new guy in town now.

I live very close to the Union Building and this news makes me very happy. With that information, I'm fairly confident that 3G will go up soon!

Once Apple releases the 3G iPhone (hopefully in June) and ATT updates Chas with 3G, I'll be set. Let's hope for VideoShare enabled on the iPhone (with a front mounted camera!)

I was in touch with managers and system developers - nTelos now had EVDO everywhere in West Virginia, not just Huntington. Not bashing, just sharing the knowledge with all the rest of us hillbillies that are left on high speed (and everything else till last.

You can add EVDO to you ntelos account for $27 (covers all phones except smart phones) and the smart phones are $30/mo PER PHONE on the account. Also you have a 5 GB limit / mo and they reserve the right to bill you accordingly for usage after that. Not the greatest for tethering but hey, it would still definitely suffice. I'm thinking about getting the EVDO plan on my TREO since my stupid *** iPhone can't be tethered on the EDGE connection.

As a matter of fact... I'm going to have to head over to the Apple forum and ask a question about something.

Hope this info helps everybody out.

Tueday the 22nd I noticed that from 12:30 AM to ~1:30AM I lost data coverage on my phone at my home in Morgantown. My phone displayed on GSM whereas normally it displays EDGE. Today the 23rd my boss told me the same thing happened this morning as well. Anybody else notice this? Think this is indicative of 3G Deployment

*Crosses Fingers*

Of course I still need a 3G BB or iPhone before I make the switch from cellone.

My EDGE completely dropped in Buckhannon / Weston today. A good friend of mine just switched over to our wonderful AT&T and the rep told her that they are indeed upgrading to 3g now. So - good news for us I guess WV is getting it.

Well my best friend is the Business Accounts Rep for Att in the entire Charleston area, and he gave me a (confidential) release date of June, 10 2008. I can't wait. I used to live in Charlotte and I was cruising on 3G all the time. I was running an average of 2.4mbs. Fast enough that would tether my phone, plug it into my xbox 360, and use it as a high speed modem and play big team battles on halo . So yep. Its going to be rockin.

I added my partner to my plan on Monday, and another rep in the Charleston mall said that June 26th is the 3G rollout date for Charleston.

You know whats interesting? Is that's the one year anniversary of the iPhone & the WWDC apple event. I wonder if they're going to release the 3G iPhone and at the same time, announce HUGE 3G deployment across the US, announcing it at the Apple event.

Posted by: ArrowMaster

I purchased an 8gig iPhone for my wife last night in Charleston. The clerk told me that same thing about the 3g rollout but didn't give a definite date. Just said sometime in June.

Posted by: Dr. Triffid

I bought a Samsung Sync in Wheeling in November 2006. The saleschick was all a-flutter over its 3G capability. I asked when 3G would be coming to our area. "Any time now!"

That's what they've said every two-three months since then.

I totally agree, the last I heard was 3G is coming by this summer, so hopefully Wheeling has 3G here soon, it is definately long overdue. They must be waiting to launch really big footprints.

Posted by: platniumgold

I just spoke to the reps. in Morgantown about the new iPhone and we were casually talking about the new 3G that will be on it. I said it wouldn't matter for us in Mo-town because we wouldn't see it for another couple of years and he responded with "next year".

Posted by: scikotc84

My phone showed 3G in Huntington today at 4:30pm. It was only on there for about 15 seconds before it went away. I noticed it while I was in Ashland, KY also. It's done it there 3 different times on 3 different days. Sign of good things to come? I just hope my phone isn't jacked up.

Posted by: cingtony

6-16 in Huntington according to mti. Been noticing it for a few seconds the last few days

Posted by: just2584

According to a flyer we have been giving out Huntington-Ashland-Charleston will now be getting 3G first. It would have a been awesome if it would have been the backwards L corridor of the I-64 and I-79 area starting in Ashland and coming to Morgantown.

well, Charleston IS the state capitol and quite a bit of the state's commerce takes place here.
Just be glad that it will eventually get to MoTown...so many larger cities still don't have 3G.

Posted by: just2584

Yes the state capital and that is it. Morgantown is the only city showing signs of significant growth in population and business. Eventually Morgantown will become the largest city in the state by itself but will be behind metro wise since Morgantown's MSA will be smaller seeing how it is just Mon and Preston Counties that are apart of it compared to Charleston who has to throw in half of southwestern WV to keep government cash coming into the city since both it and Huntington have dropped below the needed 50,000 mark which gives them substantial government allowances for infastructure. Right now Morgantown is being treated just like Martinsburg has been treated when they became the hotspot of growth and still is. We are now the red headed stepchild of WV. I just hope at&t doesn't see us in that manner when it comes to rolling out some much needed 3G as they lag behind every other carrier on the planet.

Posted by: edoublep

I spoke with an AT&T rep at a table yesterday in Charleston at the Festivall Chili Cookoff, he says on the evening of June25th, Charleston will have 3G. I pressed him on it, saying that we've been promised over and over; he assured me that it is set in stone and will be live on that date. woohoo!!!

-just2584 explain why you think martinsburg was treated like a red-headed stepchild.

i was planning on switching to AT&T....anyone can give an opinion on the service? i was thinking about getting the new iphone? internet speeds on edge, since 3G isnt here yet.....

This really excites me. Even though I just sold my blackjack II, and am using a Curve. That's ok, just waiting on the Blackberry Bold.

25th is tomorrow... We shall see!

Posted by: just2584

When Martinsburg needed funds for I-81 improvement projects they were denied many times to road projects around the Putnam County area where growth has started to slide into businesses leaving the area. Martinsburg is heavily traveled through and from my last few experiences driving through that area this past Mon and Tues its still in need of some definate widening projects and new exit on and off ramps to help this area grow in the right direction. The reason I said Morgantown and Martinsburg were being treated in such a way is because once the people in Charleston see significant growth occur far away from the area they become nervous about how the capital city is going to be seen on the national and global level as it continues to shrink in population and job growth. It's already been found that at Morgantown's current growth it has the best possibility to become West Virginia's largest city overpassing both Charleston and Huntington within 10-15 years which if current estimates are correct Morgantown is about ready to surpass Parkersburg or Wheeling for the 3rd or 4th largest city. Estimates have Morgantown surpassing the 30,000 mark up from the last estimate of 28,000. If Martinsburg wasn't squeezed inbetween VA and MD there would be more businesses moving there but at the moment its more people moving there than work. Since VA and MD have better business climates and favorable taxes for businesses I think its another way of keeping Martinsburg in check since the panhandle is always talking about breaking away and this is just another Charleston and Capital trick to keep it the way it is in that area as they deal directly with 2 states and pay rates, business taxes and incentives.

Talked to the manager at the South Ridge location and he told me tomorrow night (6/27) at 9:00pm. We'll see!!

Posted by: Decker169

The sales person at AT&T Charleston Town Center Mall that I bought my LaptopConnect Card card from 06/25, advised me 3G would be active 06/25 @ 9PM.

I called at 10:05 AM 06/26 and asked if a) they had a network issue b) what was the updated ETA, as 3G was not available. Additionally, that if it was going to be over 30 days they could have the hardware back.

They confirmed new date 06/27 @ 9PM.

Still not in Charleston!

I hope your South Ridge rep is correct and I hope 3G extends beyond downtown Charleston (something tells me it wont)

I have 3G access using my Option 3G Ultra.

I have seen the download side as high as 732kb/s.

3g is good to go in huntington. It's actually live on 64 from morehead, ky to charleston. This makes me happy. And to whoever asked about wheeling. The current planned date is mid-september

I spoke the a rep. from the Morgantown location beside Starbucks and she told me that Morgantown would be getting 3G in the first of next year. Anyone else have any more information on Morgantown and 3G?

KY to Charleston?!?!?! HOLY CRAP! Thats a 1.75 hours of straight 3G coverage on the Interstate. I dont think I've seen coverage maps that wide. Great stuff.

Two reps I spoke to in Morgantown gave me the same information. I was stunned to find out it was coming that fast.

Wow - it's performing really well! I'm so happy I haven't been to bed yet LOL

I just checked for 3G with my GT Ultra here in St. Albans where I work, and to my surprise no 3G. I won't say I'm not surpised, but seriously? 15 miles from Charleston, and no 3G, what?!?!

Good thing I have 30 days to decide.

Something's wrong - you might wanna try rebooting your phone?? I live in St. Albans and 3G is working great on my Tilt.

BTW, I'm loving watching full length movies and TV shows on Hulu.com using 3G, the beta Syfire browser and my Tilt. It's awesome!

WOW! Great coverage! I'm very surprised that the coverage is that expansive. Way to go AT&T! Now if we can just get the rest of the state covered, we'll be set.
