Maybe they can flip the switch for 3g all across central IL to eastern IA at the same time. (once the switch is actually hooked up to some nice 3g!)

Just my guess, but I figured ATT would roll out in the same areas Verizon had their EVDO first, so Bloomington/ Peoria, Springfield / Decatur then go into other areas. My first thought was they weren’t going to even touch Champaign since Verizon didn’t, but I did hear from ATT it was in the plans. |

Springfield because its the capitol and Bloomington because of state farm. (I know, I know....U of I is in Chambana.) |
I have no problem with Springfield and Bloomington getting it first but Champaign deserves some love at some point.

I know someone that works for AT&T internally and they let me know there are no plans to add any more 3G in Illinois through 2008, but believe whatever you would like.

) areas of Springfield and Bloomington. I'm talking about places like McLean, Athens, Petersburg, Pawnee, and Virden. These are pretty darn rural towns. Commuter-towns yes, but very rural. Cornfields rarely need 3G, and so it seems odd to me that AT&T did the upgrades to get 3G in these places but have not touched areas where there should be more of a demand, such as Champaign, Decatur, Macomb, Peoria, Galesburg, Carbondale, etc. I'm sure AT&T will get there eventually.
Local ATT reps still claim we should see 3g here by the end of the year, so I'll believe that over the 2009 rumor.

Let me shed some light on this. Who was the first provider to deploy Evdo or 3G in the Central IL Market? It was Verizon. They released EVDO RevA in the Bloomington/Peoria area in early 2006. Then Verizon again came out of nowhere and in October 2006 released EVDO RevA in the Springfield / Decatur market (see http://news.thomasnet.com/companystory/496091 or http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/...footprinkj5.jpg Now AT&T had to do something in this market to compete with Verizon so in October 2007 (a year later), release 3G in the Springfield/Bloomington market. Note AT&T did not cover a path from Springfield to Bloomington they did though make a rather large footprint north and south of each town. (See http://www.wireless.att.com/coverag.../Central_IL.pdf) In October 2007 when AT&T deployed their 3G, Verizon did another step to shove AT&T behind by deploying a monsterour straight path from Springfield to Bloomington covered with EVDO RevA. (http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/...ootprinkj5.jpg). Now everyone is debating whether or not AT&T is going to deploy 3G in Champaign, IL this year or even in the near future. The odds of that are VERY SLIM. Think now Verizon has Decatur, Springfield, Bloomington, and Peoria covered (and surrounding towns), as well as paths from Springfield to Decatur, Springfield to Bloomington, and Bloomington to Peoria (up and down I55 and I72). AT&T has a lot of catching up to do with Verizon before it can really think of deploying elsewhere. If Verizon steps in and deploys in Champaign, we can all bet AT&T will as well. Now this is just my opinion, but let’s be realistic why would AT&T deploy 3G in Champaign if there is no other completion there right now? There are other places they need to catch up on first. No a few people are sticking to the point that the college is in Champaign that’s why AT&T is going to deploy there first. To be honest that’s probably the least of their concerns. Also people are saying they are hearing from AT&T workers that 3G is coming in Champaign this year. I hate to break it to you, but sales people lie. I was told 3G would be in Springfield, IL back in May and June at the latest, but look it came in October. Now Verizon does have EVDO right outside Champaign, just it hasn’t covered the city yet. I am assuming like all it’s going to here soon, but not within this year. If Verizon covers it in early 2008 I assume AT&T will have it covered by late 2008 early 2009, but AT&T isn’t going to touch Champaign this year. They would have done it at the same time as Springfield/Bloomington. Let’s just face it AT&T is playing catch up. Verizon has a year ahead of AT&T on deployments in this market and that’s that. Just think it could be worst, Sprint hasn’t even touched this area. Ill answer questions if anyone has any, but if you’re going to try to argue with my interpretation of what’s going on, don’t expect a response from me. |

I know people that are still mad that they had to give up their analog bag phones. Seriously.
Your profile lists that you have an iPhone, which can't take advantage of 3G speeds anyway. |

Unless you see a build map with towers, I wouldn't count on it. Nowhere in central IL is big enough to get 3G for a long long time... not to mention the issues with taking a region with all 850 gsm and trying to get their phones to handoff to 1900 umts without dropping... took them a month in springfield to figure it out. I'd put the over/under at Q3 2009 for anywhere else in central IL to get 3G. |
