thanks for the advice in my other thread regarding 8525 vs kaiser

my new question: what are the major benefits of buying an unlocked phone? i can buy my phone directly from an at&t/cingular store since that's who i have my contract with for at least another year and a half, but i can also buy my phone online unlocked and was wondering what the difference was, other than i can use an unlocked phone with a different carrier.

Unlocking the sim makes it where you can use another carrier and unlocking the cid lets you install other apps....both can be unlocked for free

yes but cid is more risky, the carrier them self will do the sim unlock for you but unfortunetly the CID unlock you would have to research on your own to see who can do it for you

can you install third party apps without the phone being unlocked?

or does one need to unlock the cid....?

some you can...alot you have to unlock first...
