BJ or 3125 ?

Crazy ---- I'm sure but inside of 2 weeks, I bought a Cingular Blackjack (has G) and then a 3125 (has E) and both seem to be great phones with WM5. I put my Cingular/AT&T Sim card in either and they work fine.

I frankly would like to keep one of them and sell the other but can't decide which to keep.

My question: Which one do you believe has the best RF --- because the phone connectivity and stability is the most important things to me right now.

That is a pretty subjective question and will depend on where you tend to operate with your device. I've had a 3125 and prior to that an imate star trac and have always had good reception with that model, but here are plenty of folks who do not. I had the Blackjack and always found that to be good also especially when I operated it only in gsm. I'm in a fringe area with 3G and had some switching issues and chose to operate in gsm vs. 3G most of the time. SOme users complain about the BJ RF though also. Since you have both of them in hand, it should be fairly easy for you to do some comparisons.

Hi john1027.... and thx for replying.

What do you mean by ""especially when I operated it only in gsm"" ??

3G tends to be a bit of a battery hog esp. when you are in fringe areas and it has to constantly keep seeking 3G signals. If you want to improve your battery life, you can switch to gsm band vs. 3G. How to do that and an easy way to do so is well documented in the AT&T pda forum here and should be easy to find with a search if you are interested.

I've owned both. If the battery life is good with the BJ then keep it. It was the only reason I switched from a BJ to the 3125. I miss the 3G.

I'm up for an upgrade from ATT, and have been using an 8125 and before that an MPX200. I'm down to choosing between a 3125 and a Blackjack for my next phone. I like the 8125, but broke the LCD twice. That's why I'm leaning toward the 3125 with the flip form factor, to give the screen a little protection when not being used. I never really used the qwerty that much, so I won't really miss it.

I am going to miss the wifi from the 8125. Does anyone know the status of the micro SD wifi card Spectec has been touting since last year? Will these work on a phone with the card buried inside?

I did the "How to" search about how to chg from 3G to GSM and got a billion pages, sorted thru some for a while till cross eyed.... no how to yet !!!

Does anyone have a URL to the How To...??

I used a 3125 for a long while before switching to the blackjack in Nov 06. My advice is this: if you do a lot of downloads or streaming or messaging, go with the blackjack. If you don't, go with the 3125. Data is fast on the blackjack and it makes a big difference in streaming, etc. Good voice dialing alone (MS Voice Command) might reason enough for some to go with the 3125 as it doesn't work on the blackjack via bluetooth.

To lock the blackjack to GSM, you can do one of three things:

Connect your phone to your PC
Explore via Activesync to My Device/Windows and create a short cut to either Bandselect.exe or AdminSettings.exe. Cut the short cut and paste it in the My Device/Windows/Start Menu and name it whatever you want. You'll then have access to either the admin settings which will give you access to several things including selecting GSM (it's under call settings or something like that), or you'll have access to the band selection and you can choose GSM 850 or GSM 1900 and it will stay. Also, you can choose WCDMA if you want to lock the phone to 3G for data purposes. Lastly, there is a code (I forget what it is) that will allow you to enter the admin settings but this doesn't make much sense since you can create a short cut in your start menu as described above.

I use the bandselect shortcut so that I can quickly manually switch between GSM and WCDMA. I leave it on GSM most of the time to avoid the dropped calls associated with AT&T's UMTS/HSDPA network and to increase battery life. I switch to WCDMA (UMTS/HSDPA ) when doing heavy web browsing or downloads or streaming.

I have a 3125 and love it. Great size and easy to use. My boss just upgraded to a BlackJack and while the reception is better on it, he can't stand the small keyboard and says he types no faster than he did on the 3125 with T9. So I'm happy with my 3125 for now until the Kaiser comes out.

A BJ is a one time deal. A phone, you can use over and over.
