Thinking about iPhone

I can't believe I just said that! But now that it can be unlocked and used on T-Mobile, I am looking at it again.

Anyone else have input?

Well, after reading the kids blog I can see that this is not a trivial job. The majority of people are not technically savvy enough to use a soldering iron let alone patch their firmware.

Also, while it is great that it can be used with T-Mobile, there are still some issues to be dealt with:

1) The phone still costs $599
2) You have to sign a two year contract with AT&T
3) You can break that contract for $200+ if you want to only use T-Mobile
4) You have to perform the unlock operation

Now, if a cottage industry pops up selling unlocked iPhones, I suspect they are going to cost quite a bit more than $599.

I will be curious to see if the iPhone follow-ons, such as the rumored iPhone Nano, will be exclusively AT&T or if they will be available to other carriers. Personally I would wait until at least the iPhone 2.0 or iPhone 3.0 for this "exclusive" locked nonsense to go away.

Wirelessly posted (Palm Treo 680: Palm680/RC1 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98; PalmSource/Palm-D053; Blazer/4.5) 16;320x320)

you don't have to sign a contract to get the phone... go buy it at the apple store!

its software, easy.

Even if you can unlock it, there is no guarantee it will work smoothly on T-Mobile. And if something goes wrong, obviously you won't be covered under waranty anymore by Apple or at&t. If you really want the iphone, just go with at&t.

the question is will your miss the treo's keyboard compared to just using touchscreen on the iphone??

YESSSS

i dont know what I was thinking. I once thought about getting the HTC S710 (Vox). Boy I would have missed my Treo!

My husband has an iphone and I just purchased a new 680. I can tell you imo the only thing the iphone has on my Treo is it's video capabilities. It is really nice watching video on the large screen that the iphone has.

That is the only thing I like better about it though. His ringtone volume is really low, and you can't really listen to music or watch video and actually hear anything without headphones.

Also I really like the fact that I can do cool things with my Treo like make my own songs into mp3 ringtones that husband can't do with iphone. Paying $400 isn't enough, you still have to go through Apple/itunes for anything extra on that phone and even still there isn't much available seeing as how you can't even put applications on there.

I've tried several other smartphones and keep comming back to my treo, I like some of the features of the iphones but couldn't give up my treos keyboard.

I'll stick with my 650 until palm releases the new linux os models in late '07 or '08. Hopefully we will see a many of the improvements the palm community has been asking for.

Here is a list of changes proposed to palm by Engadget

http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/21/...n-intervention/

and Palm's response:

So I still have hope

No...the iPhone is slimmer, has 8GB built in(or 4 if you got an older one), has a better UI, bigger screen, Wi-Fi, an OS that hasn't seen an update in years, better Web browser/music player/video player...

* You get slimmer, I get a real keyboard, removable battery, infrared, MMS, and stereo bluetooth (with optional driver).
* 8 Gig - Yeah, but I can swap 4GB removable media, can you?
* Better UI - Better is subjective - The iPhone can have a simpler interface because there are fewer things it is allowed to do. There are other interfaces for the Treo as well.
* Bigger screen - Give you that
* Wi Fi - Only usefull if you frequent hot spots
* Better Web browser/music player/video player - the full version of the player that comes with Palm (Kinoma, $25) can do things the iPhone can only dream of, including flash. http://www.kinoma.com/Player4

Can the iPhone get live, streaming TV?? http://www.mobitv.com/products/products.php?i=treo Opps, forgot the iPhone doesn't have 3G. Guess that also means you can't do Slingbox or Orb. Too bad.

That being said, in a year or two, when the used iPhones come down enough in price, I would like to get one and put my prepaid SIM on it just to fool around with.

I think the IPhone is way overhyped. The dealbreaker for me is the fact that its closed. Palm OS may be old but at least I can customize it the way I want.

Not just that but a Palm can be unlocked in a vendor sanctioned way. Apple is determined to keep iPhone's locked to AT&T and undo that various hacks that have been created so far. That alone is indicative of a bad attitude towards their customers. I would be interested, some day, in trying out an iPhone with my T-Mobile service BUT for now I will stick with my Treo 600 and other devices. I have a 4G iPod Photo that serves me well.

don't do it.read the web.people been having problem.plus apple is banning them.i have both a 755p and a prepaid iphone from att.the palm os is way better than the iphone.the amount of apps that are out for the iphone are very very limited.its just a pretty screen.no free mobitv no free telenav.no turn by turn navigation.iphone just sucks.period.give it a year then maybe it will be cool.i just use it for safari and email.i still cant get it unlocked no matter what I do

Palm OS is dead...pick up an iPhone, and if Palm every gets a new OS out the door, then look back, and reconsider.

Until Palm OS II ships, forget about it

In addition, you can buy unbranded, unlocked Treo's directly from Palm. Apple does not even offer that option.
