I have avoided installer.app until NOW, this is sweet! I am going to play...

------

Big news today on the iPhone development front. This morning brings the release of both a native instant messaging client and a native IRC client.

Apollo IM just entered Version Negative 1, an early beta release. It is available as well via Installer.app. Apollo IM has been developed by "Arminius" and offers iPhone-native instant messaging capabilities. Future releases will support file transfer as well as MSN/Yahoo/Jabber/Gtalk support.

"Pogi"'s iRCm provides a GUI-based Internet Relay Chat client for your iPhone. You can join channels, issue raw IRC commands and take part in conversations. iRCm is available for download at Google Code, and packages have been loaded for both Installer.app and PXL.

Both applications have been developed with Shimmer/PXL, the iPhone auto-updates library. Shimmer allows iPhone code to "call home" and update themselves when new versions become available. Both developers are looking for feedback and plan to use this update feature to allow the program to keep growing via its installed base.

If you're interested in developing for either application, pop over to Google Code and download the latest SVN. Both projects offer a great opportunity to get involved in open source.

The IM client doesnt run in the background. It signs you off if you return to the main screen. The Web based client still is better it would seem.

Which web based IM clients run in the background collecting IMs while you do other things on the phone?

You can download Installer.app from here:

http://iphone.nullriver.com/beta/

You need a Mac to install it.

Once installed on your iPhone, Installer shows you a list of apps you can download over the Internet and then install on your iPhone. Real nice.

I assume its not possible to do this on a windows based pc yet?

The client looks sweet and it will be fun to try out.

You can install the installer.app from a windows machine. I did...You need to find one of the programs that lets you browse the phone's file system. I think one is called "iPhone interface" I believe that is the one I used (I'm not at that computer). And you install the installer.app on the phone. There are some directions floating around somewhere on how to do this if you don't know how.

P.S. Make sure you phone is already jail broke and all that good stuff.

Back OT: I installed the IM version and it works ok, if it didn't lose connection everytime. And also I can't find the IRC client yet, so I will wait to give my verdict on it.

I know all I use is winscp now, but if you install installer.app with iphone interface then you can install sshkit on your phone from that easy. It kills 2 birds in one stone...instead of having to install both of them.

i do not like installer.app

i prefer to install manually..but thats personal preference

I love installer, it updates apps, uninstalls, everything from gui itself, and wireless....

also, b.i.t.chx has been out for a while afaik it was the first irc client...

Posted by: k0mpresd

i do not like installer because when the nes updates were rolling out it couldnt keep up w/ them

i was installing nes versions a lot newer than what installer was the "newest"

also, if i did install them manually it did not update to the new version in the installer app

Wrong. ircii (which *****X is based off) was first. Panasync (the creator of *****X) borrowed ircii's codebase and improved upon it to make what we now know as B*tchX.

I think the only way we're gonna see a Chat program operate in the background is through the works of a proxy server that collects all your IMs, chats, session changes, etc.etc. and then pushes them to your phone when the application is open and collects when the app is closed. This is how all the Sidekicks do it as well and it works beautifully.. So if you lose signal, the proxy will keep collecting your messages as if you were still online and then when you regain a connection, you will get the messages that were pending for you.

So either Apple will need to setup a proxy for chat or ATT will have to. You're not going to want an application running in the background constantly connecting to a server for chat updates, it will kill the battery. But in fact, Sidekicks do stay connected to the Edge connection 100% of the time if it's available, but thats why they only last 12 hours a day on a full charge as well. The iPhone doesn't seem as efficient when it's connected to a "Live" EDGE connection..

this is definitely a good first step. I can't wait for Apple to release iChat... they need to hurry it up... I'm predicting towards Leopard release...
