Can I use Motorola StarTAC?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

If I bought a Motorola StarTAC would it work with the Verizon network? What versions of the phone would work? Thanks.

Good lord man, there were several models (versions/look alike outside) of Startac, so which one u have?

Posted by: VeriForce

I don't have one yet. I want to buy one that will work with verizon.

Posted by: jsmithepa

A 7868 should work. Be sure u add the expense of a new battery... if they still sell them.

If it is not E911 capable, Verizon will NOT activate it.

Posted by: VeriForce

Will verizon let me use it if it is already a verizon phone? Using it again wouldn't be considered activating, right?

If they won't let me use it, would a calling card work?

Posted by: jsmithepa

Nope, you don't undertand. It's a government mandate that devices by certain dates must have E911 feature. They can't cancel your current service if u don't wish to buy a new phone, but any transfer of ownership (which is what happends here), then it's an activation.

A calling card won't do didly if the phone can't contact tower.

What your fixation with the Startac anyways?

Well, I want an older phone. I don't want to have the RAZR like everyone else. Plus, the StarTAC looks awesome. So, what are the oldest phones out there that have E911 in them?

Moto T720...

Motorola V60S, maybe. I can't remember if it had a monochrome or color screen. It was E911 capable.

The earlier V60i and V60c models did not have E911.

Whoa! The V60s looks awesome. The screen is monochrome. Thanks for the help everyone.

There's also the v120e from around the same era if not a little older than the V60.

I had a v60s and it was a tank! Loudest speakerphone ever made.

Now I can't decide on v60s or v120e. Thanks again.

Do a search for these two models in the Verizon/Motorola section of HoFo. You can read old threads to see what issues owners of these phones had.

I think the V60S was an OK phone. It was really a rebadged V60P (push-to-talk) model that didn't sell well. The PTT service sucked, not the phone itself. Anyway, Verizon converted much of the V60P inventory to V60S by a firmware and sticker change.

I don't think the V120e was quite as good. I believe it was a lower priced phone than the V60S. I also remember some early V120's weren't E911 capable. I'm not sure that all V120e's had E911, but the last ones made did have it. Check out the old HoFo threads and Phonescoop. These phones are probably cheap enough on ebay to buy one of each to try out. Make sure they are Verizon branded, or Verizon won't activate them.

You can activate it on pageplus prepaid. They use verizon's network and will activate verizon or alltel startacs.

Posted by: VeriForce

I found their website. How do they get away with this? Wasn't there a law that phones can't be activated unless they have E911? Will the phone get a number for people to call it? Could I use MicroTAC as long as it's verizon?
