Here's the Cause of Low speakerphone volume

We all know the speakerphone is a joke. I believe Apple has the speakerphone volume capped on purpose (We all know it's capable of much louder volume).

The volume is capped to keep the echo problem from getting worse. When I try to talk on speakerphone, callers frequently complain that they can hear themselves.

The iphone's speaker is too close to the mic. The mic "hears" the speakerphone and sends what it hears right back to the person speaking. If Apple gives us more volume, we still won't be able to use speakerphone, because of horendous echo. Can the echo be fixed via software and still keep the iPhone full duplex? Don't think so, but maybe Apple has some revolutionary DSP in the works. More likely though, a hardware fix.

And I doubt it can be fixed via software. How could software recognize and filter sounds from the phone vs sounds from your mouth?

Of course that can be done, and its not even 'revolutionary DSP'... in fact it's pretty basic. Many speakerphones today already do exactly this.

I highly doubt this is the reason for the low volume, and this thread title should read "Here's MY OPINION on the cause of low speakerphone volume"

It's called sidetone.

A little bit of sidetone is good because when you hear your own voice in the speaker, you can confirm that both the microphone and speaker are in working order.

Too much sidetone and you get feedback.

Thanks for this post, I thought it ws just my phone. Everyone I talk to on the speakerphone says there is a echo they can hear themselves. Does everyone have this problem or should I send my phone in.
