phone keeps crashing

Before I start I would like to say I totally don’t know what I am doing. And I hope this is the right place to post.
I have a Moto. Razr v3, and whenever I flip it open (e.g. to answer a call) the phone goes crazy, I have had the screen half work (half blank half the 'desktop'), I have had the screen flicker for a while, and often I have had the phone either turn white or just stop working. The problem seems to be worst if I open the phone fast, and I can get it to show this problem if I repeatedly open and close the phone. I have a feeling its a software issue (the phone is old and has been dropped many times, not that dropping it should affect the software).
I am going to stop hear for a second to see if any one has any ideas....
If not, then I think I would like to erase and reinstall everything, so it’s as if it just came off the assembly line (like when people format their computers).
The best I can tell is I do it as follows
1) remove the sim card
2) hold down * and # and turn the phone own
3) using a p2ktool install new flex and flash software.
#3 seems to be my problem
a) where do i find the proper software? My flex version now is GSMV3xxRGR01NA0A5 and I have no clue how to find my flash. I am on Rogers (in Canada)
b) Just in case I screw things up how do I save my original flex/flash
c) I have downloaded p2kMan to try and see if that would do something, but it tells me 'phone not detected'. On the other hand Moble Phone tools can detect my phone (when it is turned on and not in boot loader). Motorola Explorer 0.96 also seems to work--so if we could use that, I would love it.
any advise for someone who is hopelessly lost would be appreciated

What is the software version currently on the phone? There was a recall on V3's about 1.5 years ago for a faulty flip detector, but it was only a certain range of phones manufacture dates. It's doubtful that you have one of these phones if it just recently started doing this.
Did you try a Master Reset or Clear? This will restore it to the factory new condition. If you still see the problem, it's likely a hardware and not software problem. Dropping the phone won't break the software, but it can cause problems with the display (as my brother found out). It sounds like you are ready for a new phone. Might want to pick up a padded case, just in case
