(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: aznfreak

Anyone know how i can install a traditionall chinese pack on my P1i?

Thanks

sorry if this was brought up be4

Posted by: fryrice8850

lol man i don't they ever release one for the p1

Posted by: GT-[R]

the one for the m600 works on the w950 as well as the p1, ive tried on both

Posted by: fryrice8850

really it works with the p1? thx im gonna go try it now. oh also is it true some ppl say it takes up more memory space cuz of the chinese words?

Posted by: aznfreak

woooooh thanx thanx

can any1 send me the link to dl the chinese pack for it??

Posted by: fryrice8850

idk i went to se website in both the hong kong site and the usa site both check the m600i language pack but don't see chinese

Posted by: darkir3

can anybody post a link for that chinese pack file? or Email dimsumboy@sbcglobal.net please... THANKS!!!

Posted by: usydbandage

Do you know Chinese. You can refer to www.myse.cn or www.sonybbs.com the two biggest sonyericsson forum in Mainland China. I saw one instruction of uiq substitution which may solve your problem

Posted by: GT-[R]

hang on let me find the m600 files

you can only read chinese/japanese font, u cant hand write it... its a quick and free fix

Posted by: GT-[R]

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=HUJBF0PV

NOTE: THIS WORKS FOR M600i, W950i, P1i as i have tried it on all three phones

need to put it in this directory
M2://Resource/Fonts/

unless its the w950, you dont have to put it on the memory card since there is none, just create a folder within the phone and name it Resource, and another folder called Fonts inside, then put everything in the zip file inside

Posted by: aznfreak

woooh thanx thanx owe yah 1

Posted by: GT-[R]

no problem... =]
feel free to bump this thread so others can use it too, i dont think megaupload links expire

Posted by: fryrice8850

wait so u don't have to put it in the system folders or anything like that just in the m2 card and thats it?

Posted by: GT-[R]

yes
root directory of your m2 card, create a folder named Resources, then create a folder inside that and name it Fonts, then drag and drop everything from the zip folder inside. You have to restart your phone after for it to work.

Posted by: fryrice8850

oh okay it was that restart that i needed to do thx man!

That was AMAZING...!!! thank you for the help... they need more pplz like you in SE. cant belive they just throw the phone into market with no support. and WHY only TRI-BAND!? I'll pay extra for quad-band, and EDGE!

I named Resource<s> it didnt work, but without the "s" it did after reboot, and IMO even the english font look much better now ^^;

Posted by: chanman87

i think someone should STICKY this

Posted by: mcg

Just got my P1i today... mmm.. gonna try it out

Posted by: mcg

Hmm, so how does this exactly work? It made my fonts a weird one and things look weird, but at least it supports Chinese. Any way to restore the original font but also have Chinese support? Or does this method sort of "tells" the phone to use this font set?

Update: OK.. I just found out this method also destroys any formatting applied in the phone.. ie. bold... etc

Posted by: mcg

OK, I have just found a way for TRUE CHINESE SUPPORT on this phone, it requires flashing of the phone to the HK F/W, but it's free:

1. Head over to SE-NSE.net and download the program XS++ 2.2
2. Follow instructions to put your phone into flash mode (hold C) and let the phone detect your phone
3. Go to the "flash" section and run the script for the HK CDA CDA162024_74 - make sure everything corresponds to your organizer version, and firmware.
4. Run the script, follow the instructions as provided.
5. Your phone should now have 2 CDA's if you boot it up. Run SEUS and update regardless of your version of software; after the process, you should have full Traditional Chinese Support (ie. menus, everything) w/ UK English as your other language.

Many thanks to the programmers at SE-NSE for making this possible!!

EDIT: OK GG... don't do this method unless you want to lose your english keyboard input... I'm still trying to figure this crap out lmfao, argh my phone is too chinesey now.. haha

Edit 2: Nm... got it working. Great firmware HK as usual!

Posted by: fryrice8850

so it works well? im gonna try it now, and it will support hand writing chinese too?

Posted by: mcg

Here are some bonuses for flashing:

- native Chinese TRADITIONAL support
- full handwriting support
- enter character by stroke support
- Blackberry data software for input/output
- Chinese-English dictionary (And vice versa)
- Camera shutter sound can be disabled

Here are the only disadvantages I've found so far:
- text antialiasing is gone (partly due to make Chinese characters show up better)
- more memory consumption (RAM is less, well of course due to the CHN support)

Posted by: fryrice8850

looks like the site is down, can't access the download page.

Posted by: GT-[R]

i like the thinner/smaller font of the chinese pack :P
is the flashing 100% safe? and do you still retain your english keyboard, but add on top chinese character writing?

Posted by: mcg

Yep it is 100% safe as long as you choose the right script package and no blackouts kill your power.

You still retain your english keyboard, there is a little popup that lets you choose symbols, and switch between English/Chinese on the fly - very convenient if you ask me!

Posted by: fryrice8850

you guys able to access the download page, cuz it says for me "under maintenance" can u show me the link to get the XS++ 2.2

THX

Posted by: mcg

I have uploaded it for those who can't download it.

these directions are correct right? cuz i don't want to brick my phone.

Posted by: mcg

I just took the risk and used their software to try to fool my phone into thinking it had an HK CDA #, and it worked. If you feel I left out something, ask me or use your intuition to find out what is missing (although nothing should be lol).

Posted by: fryrice8850

oh did u backup ur data and restore it back afterwards?

Posted by: mcg

Yup, calendar, contacts, tasks, etc.

Posted by: fryrice8850

found a little issue, the hk firmware can't view .png files.

Posted by: mcg

Really? Damn. Any 3rd party apps to do it?

Posted by: fryrice8850

idk but y did SE made the business card scanner only black & white and not colour? it can take colour business card pics, i remember the original firmware that i got can take colour business card scans.

Posted by: Quantumo

The HK firmware only has traditional chinese yes, no simplified?

Posted by: mcg

No simplified. Only Traditional, I think you may want to go with other firmware and see if they have simplified chinese.

Anyways, I just tried viewing PNG on the HK firmware... works perfectly fine.

Posted by: fryrice8850

u serious? it crashes my phone everytime i try to view the png file. maybe i have to reflash or reupdate the phone. also when i change the calendar to set the start of the week to be sunday (instead of monday) and date format to be month/day/year (instead of day/month/year) and i restart the phone it changes back to the original? don't know if u have the same issue? might be a bad flash or something

Posted by: angelakawong

do you think you can put more in detail? I just purchase my p1i phone,, and I really want to have the chinese in my phone. however, I have no idea what is HK CDA#.. where can I find that?

Posted by: fryrice8850

hey mcg which one do i use if i want to take off the hk firmware? gw1 or gw2?

Posted by: mcg

I think GW1 is preferred. Why do you want to take off HK Firmware =(

A cell phone's CDA # is its "region" that its use was intended for... say you're in HK, you buy a P1i there, you will probably end up with an HK CDA #. But if you buy one here, you will probably get a "generic" or "world" CDA which usually has most of the common languages in the world other than Chinese. You can find your CDA by going into the service menu, using your scroll wheel and * button in this sequence in standby:

* up * down down * down *

Posted by: phw

Would anyone tell me where to get the script for step 3. Thanks.

"3. Go to the "flash" section and run the script for the HK CDA CDA162024_74 - make sure everything corresponds to your organizer version, and firmware."

Posted by: mcg

Should already come with the program, just select it and hit "Run Script"

If that doesn't work, check that you have the latest XS++ software, being 2.2.

If you want to check, just boot up your phone. If it boots up properly, that's good. Then go to your main screen and press More --> Status and check your CDA. You should have two listed on there. Afterwards, just go to SEUS and update your phone.

Posted by: KingRyu

After I restarts seems to be the same. Where do I go after?

Posted by: mcg

If it's the same, you didn't run the correct script perhaps, choose the one for your organizer version ie. R6E28 or w/e, or R6E30, and pick the Hong Kong CDA one.

Run the script, take your phone out, start it up, go to More-->Status on standby. Check your CDA versions - should have 2 there. If not, something didn't happen, or didn't happen correctly.

But once you do see two CDA's, (or if it has changed), turn off your phone, start up Sony Ericsson Update Service, follow their instructions, and flash your phone regardless of having the most up-to-date FW. It should get you own the new HK one.

What this trick essentially does is just "fool" SEUS into thinking your device belongs to another region of the world, thus making it upload the appropriate firmware into your phone. Most P1i's sold here in Toronto, or Canada are "Generic World" - ie. they have English, and all these other funky langauges on it. However with a Hong Kong CDA (essentially an "identification #"), you can obtain the specific Chinese software that is probably distributed with P1c's in HK/China/Taiwan rather than the P1i's here.

Posted by: mcg

Actually I missed a step ... ****... press "BACKUP GDFS" before running the script, it should then work properly after that.

idk the firmware is weird, especially the calendar, i changed it to start the week on sunday instead of monday and when i restart the phone it changes on me, and its the same thing when i want the calendar display the date as mm/dd/yyyy it keeps converting back to dd/mm/yyyy when restart. but i love the HK firmware though with the dictionary and chinese writting

Posted by: mcg

Oh yeah, those are some bugs I don't like.. that's why I'm probably gonna get rid of the HK firmware too.. LOL

Posted by: fryrice8850

mcq try to update to the new firmware. I know there is a new firmware out for GW1 idk if there is a new one for the HK firmware. Do that first and see if it fixes that bug.

The new update fixes the camera when you finish taking a pic it don't show u a preview of the pic u just took on the old firmware, but the new one shows u the pic and ask u if u want to keep it/delete it.

Also do u know any way to get that chinese/english dictionary from the HK firmware, that thing helps me in my chinese class im taking ^_^

Posted by: mcg

Don't think there's an update to the HK firmware, tried to update it via. SEUS and it didn't work.

I think the Chinese/Eng dictionary is only part of the HK firmware, I'm not advanced enough to know how to "extract" the dictionary as an actual program... so too bad I guess... gotta stick with the HK firmware if you want the dictionary!

Posted by: DeathAbyss

dunno if this helps.. but i thinkk there was an update on SEUS for the hk firmware a while ago >.>

Posted by: ca_lo

I followed the instruction below and my phone works BEAUTIFULLY now with Traditional Chinese / HK firmware!! Thank you for sharing this information out!! I was quite sad to find out at first when my phone was simplified version (the sales lady said it was traditional version ) Anyways.. everything is fine now and i am quite happy!! Thanks!

Posted by: KingRyu

That's great to nkow.. thanks I've not tried yet... but is it possible to put it in the system folder since I soetimes swap memory cards. Is this just the fonts or does it also allow input? Let's say I want to text or email or type document in chinese can I do so with this? I need that more than anything else or a english-chinese dictionary would be so useful too.

Posted by: fryrice8850

just wondering what is the current firmware that u guys are currently using on the HK firmware? GW1 is currently at R6F41

Posted by: mcg

This method I have described effectively swaps your firmware with the HK one. Meaning, it isn't a simple replacement of fonts, but an overhaul of the phone's software.

KingRyu, your data will all be lost unless you perform the necessary backups via. onto memory card and Outlook, if needed. It isn't just the fonts, it is an entirely new firmware, meaning input, output of chinese characters is inherently supported. What's great is you can write the character down too as a method of input, and not just by entering it by the stroke method.

fryrice, not sure, I have sold my P1i for the K790a!

Previously, I started a thread regarding problems writing chiense e-mail at hotmail. Unfortunately no one replied. Does anybody have similar problems or don't have this problem? Basically, when I write up a chinese e-mail on hotmail, it would show up fine, but the receiver gets all "???". I only had 2 successful attempts with very short messages(7words or less). Can somebody be kind enough to test this out? If it works fine, please let me know what firmwire you are using. Thank you!

DeathAbyss, did your e-mail work with chinese hand-writing? I mean the reciever actually reads chinese words instead of a bunch of "???"'s.

My firmware is:
PDA software version:
CXC 162156 R6D23
Phone software version:
CSC 162037 R9G007
Bluetooth software version:
CXC 162143 R1C
CDA version:

Should I update the new one? Thanks!

Posted by: Zaku_4

well apparently this works for my p990 too lol.

Posted by: mcg

Hmm yeah theoretically that works as well lol.

Posted by: LCH

Just updated my p1 with the new firmware. Haven't tested it out though, but I do notice that animated gifs work now. Wat else should I look for?

Posted by: LCH

Still can't properly send uot chinese e-mails. Is it just me, I find the new software a little slower. Have to set ringtones from sound & alerts, the option to set from file is deleted. Other than the animated gifs, I don't see any benefits to the new firmware. Is it my phone or...? Also, I cannot send sms. Do i have to change the account?

Posted by: mcg

Can't answer your questions, sorry, as I no longer own a P1i - just hope that other members with one have answers to your questions

Posted by: LCH

Thanks, anyway. I'll see if I can solve these problems. I found out that my sms account was already set to Rogers according to sim. I might have to take it to the store late. Just curious what phone did you change to MCQ? If my phone doesn't work out, I might have to consider a WM6 phone. I love my P1i though.

Posted by: mcg

Just using a K790a now, nothing too flashy

Posted by: fryrice8850

mcg how u liking the edge speed? but the screen is somewhat small. but one thing i miss bout the k790a is the camera, mp3 player, and that clock on the top right when ur in the menu u know wat time it is instead of having to go back to the standby screen

Posted by: LCH

Finally solved my problem, ort of. Opened an e-mail account on yahoo china and worked perfectly! Finally! Should have thought of it sooner, would be nic if there is a software for this so i could write on hotmal though.

Posted by: mcg

Good to hear you've solved your problem.

I do not have a subscription on ROGERS for EDGE service right now, don't have a need for it either.

mcq, I'm surprised you sold your P1i though, so much fun. Although this is a Chinese Pack thread, I'll try to relate my following question to it. Anybody use Fring? I heard some good comments about it. Can it also manage things like QQ(chinese icq, I think)? Also, is fring free?

Posted by: KingRyu

I wish I can use the wifi feature more often wonder where I can get free access.. would be nice to have access through email without using my blackberry network it gets expensive. Any ideas? Sorry as for the Chinese pack thanks for the help I got lucky and my girlfriend was willing to trade her Chinese version fo mine so no updates needed. Mine was the Euro version which is now with her.

Posted by: mcg

Yeah I would have kept it, but the fact the phone was triband, and its market price shooting down told me to sell it... I could use the extra cash for school anyways. Perhaps there will be a better "P" phone coming out soon. For now, I'll stick with the K790a, but when the new firmware to fix all bugs comes out for the K850i, perhaps I'll use that instead.

Fring is free, I tried to use it, but it only works if the other person you are calling has Fring installed as well. You can't use it to call people with regular GSM phones.

As for wifi on the P1i, it was great because I could practically use it anywhere downtown UofT campus... Wifi network in most buildings!
