AT&T 3G rollout north of Marin, Napa and Sacramento, when?

When will AT&T 3G extend north past Marin, Napa and Sacramento? I do know AT&T Affiliate, Edge Wireless it testing and will be soon deploying 3G in their markets (NorCal, S Or, SE Id and W Wy), with deployment in some markets coming later this year.

Edit-In NorCal, Edge Wireless serves Mendocino, Lake, Humboldt, Trinity, Del Norte, Siskiyou, Modoc, Lassen and Plumas Counties.

Probably not until Edge Wireless does.

All sites are currently in the planning stages to go 3G, but I won't tell you when

I'd like to see Grass Valley / Nevada City and Tahoe / Reno covered.
I'd also like to see an updated coverage map.. hasn't been updated in a quarter.

Fine, be that way Lol Can you maybe hint at towns?

Redding?
Red Bluff?
Chico?
Yuba City?
Marysville?
Williams?
Colusa?
Oroville?
Santa Rosa?
Petaluma?
Rohnert Park?
Windsor?
Cloverdale?
Calistoga?
St.Helena?
Sonoma?

You forgot Nevada City, Grass Valley, North San Juan, Truckee, Tahoe

I don't get over that way very often, so I probably didn't even think about them I do get to Truckee and Reno on the train (California Zephyr, Capitol's) and by car every so often though, so it would be nice to have it there.

Look for Marysville/Yuba City and other major cities on an interstate/freeway to go first sometime after TDMA is taken off the air and torn out in Feb. For now, infrastructure is being built to handle all the new traffic expected (UMTS MSC level etc) and gaps are being filled in the Sac metro area.

Cool, thanks for the update and info! It sounds like most of those places should get it then, as all but the Napa Valley ones are on 101, 99 or 5.

Edit-I am hoping to see it on Edge Wireless (AT&T Affiliate) here in the Ukiah area later this year, or at least early next year. They are also shutting their TDMA off (they officially stopped supporting it in June, and have sold GSM only for quite a while), and 3G is much of the reason as it is with AT&T. Of course, Edge doesn't have any AMPS to deal with, so they can pretty much shut off TDMA at will.

Edit2-I assume AT&T phones will be able to use Edge's 3G, as Edge is an AT&T Affiliate (AT&T has a 40% interest in them, 60% is privately held). All features, like GPRS, EDGE, MMS, etc, etc work seamlessly on Edge, I take it 3G will be the same?

Any updates?

Are we only a couple of days away from 3G in most of California?? I am only 5 miles away currently in the Sacramento area (Cameron Park).
Has anyone heard of the latest plan for ATT and 3G?
Thanks
Darrell

Don't expect the AMPS/TDMA sunset and 3G turn up to be on the same day.

yes my AT&T phone works flawlessly on EDGE's 3G

Posted by: ilvla2

Yep, mine too So far, only Ukiah has it, though I wouldn't doubt Eureka does too, but I haven't been up there in a while to test it. I did notice Edge's 3G and EDGE were very flakey the other day, speeds would range from 150 down to 2.0 Mbps down, though I think that had more to do with AT&T's data problems than Edge's network. Edge hasn't officially announced it yet, though I expect them to before the AT&T buyout completes the end of May.

Right on, I'm excited! I have some 3G here too, via Edge's 3G in Ukiah, though still no 3G here in Redwood Valley (8 miles north of Ukiah). Of course, the AT&T buyout of Edge is set to complete by June, I hope AT&T keeps the same commitment to Edge's areas as Edge has.

Edit-Do you have any more info on the buyout/merger of Edge into AT&T? I'm just curious if they'll keep the same MNC, 310-090 or consolidate it into AT&T's 310-410. I have found some good articles, and AT&T "says" they will keep as many employees as they can, and actually were very impressed with Edge's network and call centers, if that holds true, things will stay good here.

I have a cabin near Lakehead, CA which is about 25 miles north of Redding, CA on I-5. I have an Aircard 875 (and a Top Global MB6800) and I'm getting "Edge" speeds (100 kbs down) now. Will there be any joy for me soon or am I SOL for 2008? Hoping for some improvement someday. Thanks.

Hey, what about Auburn? psst, get GV and NC but not Auburn? Auburn is bigger, and less rural.

Posted by: formercanuck

I almost consider Auburn a suburb of Sacramento/Rancho Cordova. Grass Valley/Nevada City (almost like a set of twin cities) are a little off the beaten path.

Eh, Its more of Roseville than Rancho, but its still out here, and no 3G from ATT thats the main reason I went to Verizon, because they got it out here in the window they told me ATT promised me the beginning of 07 then it was end then Jan 08 still none.

Yup - sales can never deliver on their promises. They also stated L.A. would be covered back in December 2006... they turned up about a dozen or more sites, then sat on their hands for ~ 8 months before adding any more.

Posted by: VZW_rules

Yup, it would be very beneficial to them if they'd get goin, I seriously hope the end of 08 for my area is decently covered like EVDO is. If that happens, I'll be back on American Telephone and Telegraph , but only second to Verizon, because there 3G coverage can only grow now.

is there anyway att can even speed up the deployment of 3g anymore?
