8525 Digitizer Replacement Help!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Howdy Folks!

I've had a 8525 for several months, really like it, running the WM6 ROMs now.

Anyway, the "screen" got scratched, and from what I could read the digitizer was the outer part of the display system. So I ordered a replacement from Fleabay (finally got here from Hong Kong after 2 weeks). Cheap, with tools it was like $20 shipped.

Anyway, I followed the 8525 disassembly guides (the video and all the printed material), got everything apart down to the LCD.

OK, so what the heck? While the digitizer looks to be the correct size (and have the correct connection) how in the world is it attached to the LCD panel? Is this not a serviceable part? Strange that several people sell this.

Any ideas? Hahaha, my phone looks pathetic right now. I mean at worst case I can put it back together, and I'm out $20 (I think it was actually $18).

Does the digitizer separate from the LCD assembly?

Much thanks in advance to anyone with incite into this mystery

Several dozen views so far with no responses - I'm guessing nobody knows. I contacted a PDA vendor about service, but they don't deal with the 8525 (gave me some links to people who do).

Figured I'd reassemble this $500 phone sitting in parts this weekend! Putting new HID projectors in the ride, so this will be a good "hands on" weekend

Spelling checker sidenote: Just noticed I'm asking for someone to stir up a riot vs. having some additional perspective. Nice

Did you ever find the answer to this?

I don't know if I should just buy a digitizer ($20) or the LCD/digitizer combo ($60). Can anyone explain the difference for me? I just have a cracked screen and I want to replace it. Who has done this successfully and which one(s) did you buy?! You could save me $40 (if I don't need an LCD).

I did! Here's my final solution:

Worked great! However note the incredible tough digitizer seperation (plus the so-so dig-to-LCD connection). I'd do the digitizer+LCD as a single piece for $60 if I did it again.
