RAZR2 V9m mp3 ringtone problem

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I just got my RAZR2 V9m today through Verizon. I had a microSD card from my previous Moto phone, so I cleared it and put it in the RAZR so it could make the default directory structure. I took it out of the phone and put it in my computer. I made an mp3 that I wanted to use as a ringtone, then I copied it to the microSD at /motorola/shared/ringtones (or something like that). It's the same directory where I used to store ringtones for my E815. PRoblem is, the stupid RAZR doesn't see anything. The manual says to use WMP11 or some stupid process. That's ridiculous. I should be able to copy files manually. My mp3 doesn't appear under ringtones or the music player on the phone. Any suggestions before I throw it off the concrete?

The folders the V9M uses are different then the E815/V710...

for Verizon V9M info see -> http://mark.cdmaforums.com/V9M.htm (item #10 might help you)...

Btw, ring tones can NOT be on the card. They must be in the phone's memory, and the option to copy ring tones from card to memory does NOT exist on the V9M.

There is more discussion on the Verizon V9M over in the Verizon/Moto section -> http://www.howardforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=294

Thanks for the info!

I would like to sarcastically thank Verizon for crippling the hell out of this phone. I can't copy mp3s via Bluetooth. I can't send them via txt messages. I can't even find a USB cable for this phone. Anyone know where I can get one? No one sells them. Freakin Motorola used a different connector than everything else.

All I want to do is get an mp3 from my computer to my phone. How hard is that?

See that link I posted Its not too hard... just have to work around some limits..

As for the cable.. Verizon has their Music Essentials kit in stores now, and it contains USB Cable, Driver CD, and Stereo Headphones w/Mic and Send/End button on it (so you can listen to music as well as answer/make calls).

In the threads in the Verizon/Moto section, you'll see discussion threads about the V9M, and talk about getting the cable... Dealday.com has them, and/or the adapter. Moto Part numbers are listed on the V9M.HTM link I posted.. you can search the NET for them too.

Be patient... these are the FIRST phones using this MicroUSB connector. The Q9H is also said to use MicroUSB connector, but I have yet to see that phone to confirm.. I've seen some online sellers sell V3 accessories as compatible with the Q9H, and that can't be right if the Q9H really uses microUSB... the Q9M i can confirm does NOT use microUSB, but rather the same old USB Mini-B...

As for the process, I'm good. I'll be using BitPim once I get my hands on a cable. I've just been very frustrated because none of the 5 ways I've tried (sans cable) have worked.

I bought this phone because I read that it ran a form of Linux, so being a Linux user, I was hoping to just connect it to my machine and access the filesystem...

Um, you CAN'T use BitPim... Brew file system locks prevent bitpim from accessing the folder where Ringtones are stored.

Better re-read the V9M.HTM link I posted if you are thinking about ring tones/pictures/videos.

I don't know the CDMA V9M actually runs Linux, or if that is the GSM version of the phone which does.

That's what I get for assuming... Time to do some actual reading instead of skimming... I'm beginning to think I should have went for OpenMoko.

Since I don't yet have my cable, Nelson5693 was kind enough to share how he gets ringtones to his phone... by changing .mp3 to .qcp and bluetoothing it to the my_rings folder. That gets the file there, I can play it from the Call Settings menu, but it doesn't play when I receive a call. So for anyone else with this phone, the above may or may not work for you, but it's an easy first try...

Again, you should have done more reading instead of skimming...

The only device I have with bluetooth is a Mac. I've been having trouble getting obexftp to compile, hence the try with standard bluetooth. What do the OBEX tools to that standard bluetooth doesn't? Any information on that anywhere?

You are using OBEX File Transfer Profile... or You are using Object Push profile (OPP)... It really depends on your drivers/bluetooth stack... I don't have a MAC so and I didn't know you do until this post.

On the PC side there are various Bluetooth Drivers/Stacks... Widcomm, Bluesoliel, Toshiba, Microsoft.. each has its own tools/interface, and they also may support different profiles. (MS for example doesn't support BT OBEX FTP. Widcomm uses a "my bluetooth places" icon to start everything... Bluesoliel has their own interface/tool to start/use all bluetooth services...

The point of my post was... earlier in this thread I pointed you to that page which does say you can use Bluetooth Object Exchange (OBEX) File Transfer Profile (FTP) and what conditions need to be met.

I guess what I'm trying to understand is why, if I got the files on the phone in the correct place, do they not play when I receive a call? Do different bt stacks taint files? As far as I knew, bluetooth was bluetooth, and as long as the file got from A to B, it worked. Obviously there's more to it than that and I am clueless when it comes to bluetooth.

No, they should play... what encoding rates/settings are you using?

However, I did run into an insteresting thing... when the V9M was connected to my Dock-n-Talk, and an phone call came in... my custom ring tones would not play. Built in ones would.

Connect to my Moto BT headset (HS820), and all tones, even my custom ones would ring just fine.

Posted by: slonkak

My files are 192kbps, 44khz, stereo, ranging from 16 seconds to 34 seconds. The one I have set as the current ringtone is 16 secs and no dice. I don't have any headsets or anything, just the phone. And bluetooth is off when I'm making/receiving calls, so that shouldn't interrupt it.

I found in some of your links people saying to remove id3 tags (same problem), convert it to mono (wouldn't even transfer to the phone), and other things. No dice yet...

Posted by: slonkak

128 44 stereo also doesn't work

Posted by: Mark_Venture

I'm using 48kbit/44khz/mono and 64kbit/44khz/mono.... other than the DNT issue... these work..

I'm also using General Midi Type-0

Posted by: slonkak

Geez, don't your songs sound like crap at that low of a bitrate? My ringers are snippets of classical music. But tomorrow when I'm in front of the Mac again I'll try encoding them at 64/mono and see what happens...

I thought we were talking about RING TONES.. not songs...The phone's built in speaker/speakers are NOT that high fidelity.

On every phone I've had... encoding rates higher than 64kbps/44/mono sound no better via phone's speakers.

Yeah, using stereo headphones they do not sound that great... BUT as ring tones, playing out the phone's speakers... they sound just fine.

My tones -> http://mark.cdmaforums.com/V710_Ringers.htm

Posted by: slonkak

We are talking about ring tones, however my ringtones are snippets of real songs, so I just refer to them as songs (which is probably a bad thing when trying to solve a problem). I just converted one of them to 192/44/mono and it played when I received a call. I will convert the rest and see how it goes. Does the "over 30 second" problem happen all the time? I guess what I'm asking is should I even bother putting ringers on there that are over 30 seconds, or should I just cut them right from the start?

when talking about not being able to ringtones on the card, thats only for verizon right? Because with sprint when u go to Tools>Sounds>Voice Calls> it gives you the option to select a ringtone from the sd card; the problem is that it cant find it; and i've tried different bit rates and switching from stereo to mono, buts nothings happening..

My point is that you should be able to use the memory card for ringtones if it's listed in the sounds section, but figuring how it works is a whole other story

I can't comment on Sprint, as I have Verizon and haven't tried the sprint V9M or using its firmware (because you can't get working data using Sprint firwmare on Verizon's network...)

With Verizon, Alltel, USCellular and Criket firmwares on the V9M... you can not use files saved as SOUNDS for ringtones, and Ringtones must be in the phone's memory, not on the card.
