2G vs. 3G on my V3xx

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I just unlocked the network options on my V3xx to go manually change from 3G to 2G if I wanted to.

Now my question is: what's the advantage of NOT using 3G all the time? Battery saving mode?

battery, but why would you want to be on 3g. calls are much clearer.

Sorry misunderstood you a bit when your post said "why would you want to be on 3G" so I was confirming.

I just figured I'd switch my phone to 2G for when I'm at work so I can save battery life while it's on standby. Might as well save battery if I'm not able to really use it beyond being a pager while I'm on the clock at work you know?

Two advantages to 2G only:

1.) Better battery life as mentioned
2.) Less problems with 3G->2G handoffs, and vice versa. I've had calls drop repeatedly when leaving a 3G area. On 2G only, you don't have to worry about such things.

I've had my seem edits and what's the settings for 2g?

That depends on the area. Only in areas where 2G is overloaded will you notice any significant differences in respect to call quality.

Does 2G save battery in standby mode also? I've heard conflicting info that 3G is fine, if not better in standby mode. However, I only saw that from one source. Mostly I've heard 2G is better for battery all around.

Basically, if I know I'm not gonna really be using my phone, I've been setting it in GSM mode. If I know I'm gonna be using it, I'll use 3G for call quality.

Also, this is for the guy that wanted to know how to fix his network settings:

there's no extra charge for accessing the 3G network for voice, right? (i.e. there's no reason for AT&T reps to push a different plan if you want to upgrade to a 3G phone like the v3xx)

Correct. You do not need a data plan to utilized 3G voice.

I'm just trying to find the best way to be battery efficient when I'm not using my phone that's all.

Whenever I'm using it, I make sure it's set to 3G. <3 to 3G!
