Ok Im sort of flipping around in my mind coming over to att and one of the phones that caught my eye is the black berry pearl, it only has edge based data acess should I wait on a 3g version of the pearl or for most phone based data access the speed differance is negetable? Also does the 3g network improve other features on the phone like general voice calling? Im besides the backberry there alot of cool edge on phones. The v9 seem to priced at crazy prices right now 200+ for a 2 year contract even for non smart phone, The if I didnt got with the pearl I was think about v3xx or even maybe the sync, they seem to be the most reason 3g phones. Thanks of any constructive posts Bob S.

PS if I did go edge for standard phone it probelly be one of the Sony ericsons. Oh btw I live in LA county area of So Cal.

3G offers a SIGNIFICANT performance increase over EDGE when it comes to data access. Basically it's like high speed internet vs. ISDN.

Also, call quality is better, and clearer, over 3G. The only disadvantage is that 3G eats battery like no tomorrow.

So basically you'll need to charge your phone daily. No biggy because that what I usually do anyway

3G > EDGE

Just kills off the battery a lot quicker.

Who is the Hugh guy?

But yes, 3G is significantly better, although it is not rolled out in many areas. As others have noted, the only negative is the battery life issue.

I'd get the v3xx over the Sync any day.

I'm probably a perfect example of what you're asking, I kind of live in a deadzone area and until more recently the only service I was able to get was via a 3G signal. At least for phone related data (WAP/Opera) I didn't really notice a huge difference between EDGE v. 3G, I understand and witnessed it was faster but not to the point I cared as much as when I dropped back to GPRS. I guess what I'm saying is that 3G is nice but I could live with an EDGE connection. Maybe I was lucky, but my LG CU500 had great battery life, I was able to get away with charging every other day or every third day even with heavy data use. I wouldn't recommend the phone though, as the build quality could have been better.

After having 3G for a year, and then moving to a place that is EDGE only, I can attest that there is a huge performance difference between the two. I certainly do not stream video like I used to (using orb) since the quality is so low now, not to mention, you can't EDGE and get a phone call at the same time, but you can surf all day long while you talk on 3G.

maybe becuase there is maybe one tower of 3g in suffolk county long island but when i am on edge at my house its much faster then the 3g at work. this is on a v3xx phone.

I ran a speed test and 3g for some reason kept coming in really slow.

probably because of weak signal, same thing will happen with EDGE.
