TyTN II-- GPS programs?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I heard that TomTom GPS program that comes with the TyTN II is limited and things like maps cost money. So.... would Google Maps work well with the TyTN II GPS?

I would like to know the answer to that question as well.

TyTN II comes with a Taster version of TomTom meaning that the program is registered and comes with one free map of your choice. You will have to pay for additional maps (one time fee). Google maps will work but you will need an internet connection to use Google maps.

TomTom and its great for trips where mobile covg isn't enough for streaming maps. Also you get turn by turn spoken directions, sure it costs money, but its cheaper than standalone nav?

I use live for local stuff. It tracks with direction arrow rather than google's blinky dot. Can also search local to that map for certain things and pan around without loosing gps center like google does.

Is the turn by turn nav month to month or is it one set fee? You say you use "live" for local stuff, what exactly does that mean? I'm coming from the Nokia based GPS so I'll be a total noob to windows mobile and this GPS when my phone gets in next week. Thanks in advance for the info.

If you download one of the independent navigation software such as Tomtom, iGuidance, iGo, etc. then you pay to download turn-by-turn maps for your city/state/country and then you use it for free. If you use Windows Live or Google maps, you'll need internet connection because these two software do not have full maps to download. These software download maps as you go.

Well.... data isn't a problem.... I just want it free.... So I guess I'll go with Google Maps. I used to have Google Maps installed on my Samsung i730, and it works with a GPS radio, so I think I'll go with that. Thanks!

Edit: By the way, the reason I uninstalled it was because it stopped working one day for no reason.

Another option is always TeleNav; They charge monthly, and also stream the data over a data connection, and so it's also subject to the same cons as GM and Live- that is, usage while on the phone and in spotty coverage is tricky, and of course you need a data plan.

The pro, obviously, is that the directions/mapset you are accessing is always up-to-date!

I haven't tested whether it works with the Kaiser yet, although my Cingular people tell me that it definitely should be for the 8925.
Also, they released a version for the Advantage X7501 (US version of the X7500), so I imagine that it could be ported easily.

TomTom is the best software out there. Turn-by-turn is free. No data plan is required.

Has anyone tried iGuidance 4.0? I prefer the Navteq maps used by iGuidance (same at that used by all Garmin products) and they are better than TomTom's TeleAtlas maps (at least in North America). And they also have "Text-to-speech" (they pronounce the actual street name). Not sure how well it would work out in real life.

I had it but don't believe I ever installed it.

Wirelessly posted (Nokia N80: Mozilla/5.0 (SymbianOS/9.1; U; en-us) AppleWebKit/413 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/413 UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)

I'm using iGuidance 4 on my PC and it works great but i'm not sure how the mobile is. The TTS is also awesome.

Does anyone know of software that tracks and saves stats such as speed, distance etc.
My brothers cheapo handheld GPS does "trips" saves stats such as Avg speed, trip time, trip distance, max speed etc....
TomTom doesn't do this, netiher does google or live as far as I know.

I'm using this great program called Tracky for hiking and general walking as it uses google maps and shows your actual route over the map. Also gives you all kinds of other statistics like speed, distance etc.

I was on Eurostar recently and note the speed on the attached screen shot.

Where can one get tomtom software if it wasn't loaded with your TyTnII package? That's my dilemma.

I had TomTom Navigator 6 on my 8525 paired up with a bluetooth GPS receiver and it worked awesome! just as accurate as, the garmin nurvi 650 that I have used in the past.

so say i was to get the tilt, i could load up my navigator 6 software onto it, and use the internal gps receiver?

That's cool, but what is it that you pay? If its the maps, are you able to keep those for reuse? I assume if you have to download the maps then you are able to buy the application; however, I can only find application packages with maps on a DVD costing $150...

$150 is an average price u pay. Look on ebay. Buy the DVD package. Copy the entire content onto a 1GB+ micro SD card and install away. You don't need a data package to use TomTom6. Maps are on your DVD you buy so you do not have to download anything more to use.

I didn't buy the application or maps

Did you try TomTom website ?

http://www.tomtom.com/products/category.php?ID=2&Lid=1

Google is your friend, now if ur asking about the "other" kind we are not allowed to talk here about that and I do not encourage it either

In my experience it is best to have Google Maps and Tom Tom Navigator loaded on the Tilt.

The Tom Tom software does not allow you to search for a place i.e. Circuitcity, but Google Maps does.

Once you have the address from Google Maps you can use the Tom Tom to guide you with Voice directions...

Try TomTom. I'm not an R66 fan but it's all I can use with my N82's internal GPS. TomTom is just..... wow. It's just so great!
