CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS PHONE!

Posted by: bastienvans

argh, what am I waiting for!? order one already

Posted by: JwY

I like the thread title, but think you should have been a bit more general as people with the 8925 and other variants may get confused.

Posted by: ur bud-dee

does anyone know if the TyTn II is as thick as the first one??

I like the specs on this phone, however, from the pics, it looks a little too thick for my liking.

TyTN II is actually thinner than the original TyTN (I think by 2mm or so).

wow... 2mm doesn't sound much.. but i guess in terms of phones, could make a difference.... I guess i would just have to see an actual one to make a decision.

Thx

Posted by: i880/8525junkie

From what people tell me...It's a bit heavier although it's thinner..I'm guessing the Qualcomm's Dual core might be the reason for it...

Posted by: drunkm3nky

Here's a comparison pic of Tytn II vs Tytn. First time doing this, hope it works.

Posted by: drunkm3nky

Here's a couple more comparison shots. A bit blurry- low light.

Posted by: drunkm3nky

Sorry- should've put them in one reply... Here's a group shot

Left-Right order: C730, TyTn, TyTn II, Wizard, N95

Posted by: i880/8525junkie

Jesus Christ!The wizard is gargantuan!!

Posted by: drunkm3nky

lol yeah the wizard seems large compared the the Tytn II. However, the Tytn is nice and dense (heavier)- feels like I can hit someone over the head with it and crack their skull.....

Not that I would or anything...

showoff!!! nice collection! regarding the size, i too was concerned since i've been using a Trinity as my primary device. it's slight larger than the Trinity and definitely heavier, but it works for me...

Posted by: Dain

LOL damn I gotta get something other than this wizard LOL man thats huge!

Wish I had the cash for a TyTNII thats for sure

Posted by: drunkm3nky

You have a nice collection yourself Cortez

Couple things so far I'd like to mention about the phone:

1) Battery life: So-so. I'm only using Edge with PUSH activated. Do about an hour or so of calls throughout the day. I also have it paired it to a bluetooth headset, plus around 10 min of web browsing. I have about 10% left at around 9 pm. I had to recharge it today during the day since I was using it a bit more.

2) There's a little bit of play if you push the left and right edges slightly- nothing major here. Maybe it's only isolated to mine? Someone who has a Tytn II can chime in here. Also, if you talk on the phone with the right hand, the sliding mechanism may move a bit. I use my left hand to hold the phone, so it's pretty solid.

3) Reception is very good. Better than my C730, N95, and Tytn. The speakerphone is also nice and loud for those who use it often.

4) HSDPA: Can't comment on this since I don't use it yet. I have once and it sucks the battery as fast as a leech sucks on my blood.

5) Buttons: The buttons around the D-pad (and the D-pad itself) seems to have a bit of play as well. Moves around a little bit- again, it may be just isolated to mine...? Minor issue here- many probably won't care.

6) Portrait to Landscape: Takes 2-3 seconds. Not that fast, not that slow. I'd prefer it to be a bit quicker. It crashed on me once when I was running Resco Explorer, Audio Manager, WM player, and took a incoming call. The crash happened when I switched to landscape mode.

7) Camera: Haven't used it yet lol... i know... this is what many people are waiting for... I'll try to upload some pics tomorrow if I get a chance.

8) CAPS: Couple of times when I hit the Caps key once, instead of just the first letter registering as a capital letter, the second letter also registers it, but the letters after are okay (ie. "EXample").

This is all I can think of at the moment. All in all still an awesome phone.

Posted by: indiglo

1) The battery life is not the greatest but neither of mine is as bad you described. My prototype is better but then again it never shows HSDPA. My newer does and the battery does drain faster. After 8 hours of use on my production model one (1 hour of web browsing, both 3g and HSDPA, about 90 minutes of phone calls, and I would say about 15-20 minutes of it connected through BT to my car) and I still had 38% left. My battery has been charged/recharged a few times already so maybe that could be it.

2) I dont notice the play but the holding it in your right hand will always happen as your thumb is right on there.

3) Reception is very good. I second that, and it always has been even with my prototype model.

4) HSDPA: I read all the complaints about draining the battery fast. It does but not as fast as I have read. The speed makes up for it, that is why I have a car charger.

5) Buttons: I think this could be yours as if I try to see if there is any play the button gets pressed in. My complaint is everything is crammed together.

6) Portrait to Landscape: No crashes yet but it does take a little long. I would think that it would of been faster. Prototype is quicker though.

7) Camera: I never use the camera, it could come without one and I wouldnt care.
8) CAPS: Has yet to happen to me, but it could.

Before I get asked why 2 of them, the prototype GPS has a problem with it and if I try to activate I will lose the radio and the phone will become just a PDA. I had to deactivate the GPS so it would not ruin the phone.

Now the prototype version is quicker than the production model. I am thinking of installing that ROM into the production to see if thats it or not. Not saying the production model is slow just that its not as fast as my first one.

I'm buying a TyTn II (probably getting it tomorrow). Are there any must-have or nice-to-have accessories that I should be getting at the same time? Is there a convenient holder for the car if you want to use it as a GPS device? Any highly-recommended add-on software?

I'm quite new to the world of high-end cell phones, so any advice would be much appreciated.

For a car holder, I would checkout eBay. Just buy one of the ones available for 8525/TyTN and it should work.

I have a TYTN II coming on Friday from Mobileplanet.com, I am using it on AT&T. I now have a TREO 750, I have a SIM card that says 3G, once I install this SIM in the TYTN II will all the settings I need to use the phone be there, such as MMS & SMS as well as data? Sorry if this is a lame question I just want to get prepared to set this up as soon as I get it.

Posted by: blacksrt4guy

For those of you that have one, does it have any status lights on the front of it? Couldnt really tell from the pics Ive found. Also, how loud is the ear piece?

Posted by: souja67

I have a Samsung Blackjack right now, if i throw the sim card from my blackjack into this phone will the media net plan still work? I need this function because i use it so much. i just dont want to have to pay the $50/month pda plan if my unlimited media net plan does the same thing for $20/month.

Posted by: drunkm3nky

@BobD7- Personally, the software I use for PPC phones are Spb Diary, Resco Explorer, Google Maps (free), CorePlayer, SkTools, and eWallet. So far, they all seem to work very well w/ the TytnII.

@ Joey- Yes the phone should automatically detect the AT&T settings and you should be able to use it right away. I also have AT&T and the 3g SIM card. Plugged it in and the settings were configured off the bat.

@ blacksrt4guy- Yes there are status light on left and right side of earpiece on the front (bluetooth, batt charge light, etc)... Forgot to add- the earpiece is clear and loud, one of the best from HTC so far IMO.

It has the typical two indicator lights on the ear piece.

! My portrait to landscape is almost instantaneous - even with apps open it's no more than 1 to 2 secs.

Man:

I have been reading every review on this phone over the last month and no one, and I mean no one speaks to the use of the device as a true phone. That is, how easy or difficult is it to dial phone numbers without a dial pad. Can someone simply speak to this matter. I know you have voice dial. But I want ot know how difficult is it to use the keypad on the touchscreen to dial a number.

This is critical to me. Also, can you get a third party larger dial pad for the screen to make dialing easier. If this is the case and dialing numbers is no problem, I am ordering this phone immediately

Thanks

There is a great youtube video that I think will answer your 1st question...

Id still like to know if the ear piece is plenty loud or too quiet like all too many phones out there! I think it was the 6700 I had on Verizon and it was unusable it was so quiet!

By 8925, I am pretty sure he means AT&T Tilt. We don't know yet what features will be removed from the Tilt so he is just saying that if features get removed (video camera, GPS, etc.) then he will go with Kaiser (aka. actual version released by HTC).

Ok, well everyone knows friends dont let friends use carrier locked-missing features phones when you can use the full-powered goodness of the unlocked version. The way the manufacturer meant! Go unlocked!

I got the TyTn II yesterday, and I'm exploring its capabilities, and I can't seem to get the GPS working. I thought TomTom 6 was supposed to be included in this package, but I can't find it on the list of programs or on either of the discs that came with the device. There is QuickGPS, but, from what I can tell, it's just an updating program, not a GPS program as such. Is there a simple answer to this?

(considering that most opinions on sound are someone subjective...) for me, the call clarity and loudness on my T II is the best i've experienced on HTC PPC's that i've owned in the past (e.g., Wizard, Tytn and Trinity). this includes my Trinity, that to date, was the best. i'm interested to hear what others think about call clarity and loudness...

Fair enough. Im just super worried that Im going to have another WM device that has lousy sound quality. Hopefully not. Mine should be here next week.

I think the sound quality is excellent--better than the Sony Ericsson cell phone that I had before this. I called my wife on it and she said it sounded like a regular phone, not a cell phone. That's good enough for me.

I think I got the same discs as you. One disc is "Getting Started Disc" that has Microsoft ActiveSync and trial versions of Outlook. The second is "Application Disc" that has Sprite Backup Tool and GPRS Monitor. I can't seem to find TomTom app.

if gps for some reason wasnt on it, it would be a deal breaker for me.

In my case (Unbranded TyTn II) the Applications disc has three items Sprite Backup Tool, GPRS Monotor, and Tomtom Navigator 6. The disc also has the Tomtom logo and name in large letters on the disc.

Regardless of what's on the disc it does not mean the GPS is not enabled on the phone. In fact it would have to be deliberately disabled. I did not use the Tomtom on the disc just my own GPS software maps and it works great.

the reason he can't find the tom tom software is because the filename on the disk is not tom tom its - installer_kaiser_ttn_6_032_8351_htc_wwe_20070716.e xe

Nope. There is no file by that name on the disc that came with my TyTn II.

I just got mine yesterday. No gps software. Called the company I ordered it from and they said they didn't know if GPS was there and they were just shipping sealed kaiser boxes.

Called HTC's tech support in the US and the guy said Kaisers in the US may have GPS disabled.

I tried google maps but it couldn't find the gps and gave me an error message.

Finally, good news: first of all, if your kaiser has gps, an amber light will turn on up the right side of where your ear will be when using it as a phone. If you try to use google maps mobile, it trys to work but apparently doesn't initialize gps long enough. I tried windows live search and it worked after i went in to "external gps" and selected gpd1 under programs and access at 4800.

GPS works but you need to have software that can start it like the missing tomtom disks or use windows live search. Incidently, if i ran windows live search, it initialized the gps and then google maps worked.

Posted by: mikechannon

I'm sure lots of folk will be breathing a sigh of relief with that conformation. There were rumours that the GPS would be disabled. Though likely that would only have been softwarewise and a way would have been found around that. From what you say then, the only difference is that the program disk does not contain the free Tomtom6 application - otherwise the GPS is fully enabled and you can install your own software GPS application.

What experience has anyone had with Bluetooth compatibility. I am looking at the "iTech Clip Radio Bluetooth Stereo" and am wondering if anyone has had any luck pairing it with the TyTN II...

Posted by: y2whisper

yeah for some reason some of us (i know specifically with superiorgadgets, but not beyond that) got different disks, but don't worry gps is still there, only people that have the gps issue up in the air at this point are people that will get the branded versions (specifically the AT&T)

anyone order one from mobileplanet?

Yes, I got my Tytn II from them on Friday as well as other phones in the past. Never had a problem with them!

cool thanks
so far ive heard nothing but good things from them

did the one you got friday have all three discs?

2 discs. It had Tom Tom on one of them!

that answers one of my big questions
since ill be ordering one from them soon

If I get the ATT version of this phone and anything is missing, would I be able to flash it with an unlocked versions software? Or am I stuck with what I get? I guess what I'm asking is what is the mod-ability of this phone

sorry, I usually use moto, but I think I'm in love with this phone

Posted by: CLERiC_AJ

Can the unlocked version support AT&T apps like mobiTV? Will the secondary camera be able to be used with Video Share when they launch the service, or do both of these require using AT&T version roms?

In your language, the "mod-ability" of this phone rocks! If you get the ATT version and have it CID and app unlocked (pretty easy after they figure it out), you will be able to install any compatible ROMs.

If someone extracts the mobiTV app then yes it can be used with the unlocked version.

i wonder if it will be possible to order a european version of the kaiser if the US version has gps disabled??? also, if we are buying unbranded why would htc disable the gps?

Any chance someone who got the disks with the Tomtom app could post a link to it somewhere that those of us who got the version without tomtom can download the app?

I dont understand why unlocked ones would have the GPS disabled. Thats one of the things Im seeing as a selling point for the Att locked Kaiser. Mine is 2 days out, hopefully it has GPS.

Mine is one of the units that did not have the TomTom software on the application disc (not an oversight: it's not listed on the label, either), but GPS is certainly not disabled. I bought TomTom Navigator 6 yesterday, and it works fine.

one more question... by installing this rom will the gps work if it is disabled by AT&T? or will the hardware be missing?

I'm pretty sure that AT&T will not remove the GPS hardware. So, installing custom ROMs will unlock the GPS if AT&T has it locked to begin with.

Posted by: CLERiC_AJ

I am really debating whether to buy this unlocked or an AT&T version. Do the unlocked have PTT and if so will it work with AT&T. Also does AT&T still limit access to media-net for unlocked unbranded phones? I do enjoy using media-net from time to time.

I bought an unlocked version in the UK, no GPS software. Just bought TomTom 6 and waiting for it to be delivered. Is there anywhere I can get a trial version ?

7) Camera: Haven't used it yet lol... i know... this is what many people are waiting for... I'll try to upload some pics tomorrow if I get a chance.

8) CAPS: Couple of times when I hit the Caps key once, instead of just the first letter registering as a capital letter, the second letter also registers it, but the letters after are okay (ie. "EXample").

This is all I can think of at the moment. All in all still an awesome phone.

and no memory leak right?

I'm going to get the ATT version as soon it comes out... I'm betting they won't mess with the gps hardware. If they do I'll just return it. As far as software, theres a good chance the ATT rom won't play well with skype and gps software... we'll see soon i guess. What I'm not sure of is whether I can handle carrying this around. It'll be my first pocket pc rather than smartphone. But its all good cause its gsm, I can swap the sim to a smaller flip phone anytime. I'm justifying the purchase for the gps and pda functions anyway. I plan to use Iguidance instead of TomTom. I'm looking forward to testing this out in Japan and S. Korea, the Triband HSDPA should work for voice as well as data, right?

I don't why some of you are asking questions about a phone that isn't released. You have to realize that pretty much noone has seen the at&t version so asking for comparisons is asking people to guess the answer. I have some questions that might actually be able to be answered. I'm not saying they are good questions.

1. Can you watch Youtube videos on it?

2. with the Tom Tom software will you be able to acually say "Tom Tom where am I". ?

3. Does Tom Tom have things like hotels, camp grounds etc etc. ?

4. Can you compare the size and weight to a treo 600-current, I have one of those banging into my knee cap all the time so I'm wondering if it's the same.

5. I don't remember if the mem card has a cover on it but is it pretty secure in it's holder. I have a friend thats lost 2 SD cards because of the treo.

Thanks

HTC BRANDED units, have GPS but no TOMTOM preinstalled.
They even left it out of the included Manual.

Did a "QuickGPS update"

I downloaded google maps and it did not work on auto. Even with help from my supplier with manual set options google maps would not work.

I then was supplied the missing TOMTOM cab for my phone.
The included TOMTOM is a "viewer only" you get 1 credit to download a EU or USA city map. I live in Vernon, BC, Canada so the closest one usefull to me was Seattle!

With TOMTOM installed.. still no GPS Signal. (Mind I had hard reset this and tried variations of settings with reboots in between)

I then wondered is the GPS even working at all?
I installed TTY
"http://www.teletype.com/pages/support/verifying_communications.htm"
This bit of software will determine whether your Pocket PC computer is communicating properly to the GPS receiver. This process will help you to determine the serial port being used by the GPS.

I fired this up. and got a "port not found" be sure to exit and close TOMTOM or Google maps!

Once i clicked on Port 0 then back to Port4 I saw GPS data stream in.

Then TOMTOM and GoogleMaps would work!!

Settings and ports did not change, but it seemed that TTY helped mine finally turn on and work. (and stayed on after resets!)

I Have seen other simular posts about google maps not working untill TOMTOM was installed, so i am sure the same issue was to blame.
For those who want a quick and sure test I suggest TTY!!

Also Googlemaps 1 out of 10 times will say "locating "0" satellites"
and error out. I found that if it starts to say this and your not getting a quick signal, try browsing to your current "know location" and pressing "zoomin" (while its still trying to locate a SAT.) this seems to work for me, and I blame Google software. TomTom works fine and every time now.
(Even though im not in the city!)

I was supplied the missing true TYTN II TOMTOM CAB from a Trusted Private Source. I would post or host if it didnt get me in trouble :P

Hope this procedure can get GPS working for thos who have the same issue.

I ordered from Mad Monkey Boy Gadgets yesterday and it's set to arrive tomorrow.

Got mine today! Got home from the gym and a present was waiting on the front door! First, I did get the CD with TomTom on it. I ordered mine from phonesource-usa.com. They were very good to work with. A few things Ive noticed. One thing that NO ONE mentioned here in this thread, unless I missed it, it came with a very nice case!! WOW! I was very suprised by this! Guess Im used to Att taking EVERYTHING out of the box! I got 2 CD's, like I said one does include TomTom, a case, extra stylus, a HUGE manual, headphones and USB cable. It came right before I left for work so I havent had much time to play but so far so good. I missed one call and it was nice to see a blinky light to let me know! 3G is working and its fast. Having some trouble with Gmail at the moment but I'll figure it out sonner or later. The phone is just huge, theres no nice way to spin it. Its big and its heavy. Like that fat girl that knows shes fat and she flaunts it! I really like what HTC has done with the home screen! Keyboard works great so far too! Like I said, I just got it so I havent even done a sync yet, so I still need to tinker a bit!

i had a similar experience....in my case (after fiddling with the GPS settings thinking "i know how this works") i found its best to use the default GPS settings, install TomTom, GPSTuner or some other GPS software, let it find the GPS receiver (with the default GPS settings this is usually COM4) and then wait for it to fix on the GPS satellites. after hard-resetting my phone this week (due to a problem app) i first installed GPS Tuner with the default settings and got a GPS fix in 2 minutes. next i installed TomTom, the fix occurred within 1 minute. all has worked well since then.... just my 2cents.

the phone is huge relative to.... (your iPhone, another phone)??? in my opinion, it's not much larger than my Trinity, BUT, it weighs much more! it's heavy but in a "tight" package. you know, like firm, fit members of the opposite sex... and you know, muscle weighs more that fat!

Would anyone care to elaborate how is the flickering\panning experience?

Plz this could be an issue for me since i would love to buy the att version but it doesnt seem to be finger friendly at the home screen.

Also when scrolling would i need to use a stylus/fingernail...or how often would i need to use the stylus?
i did noticed that in the 8525 i couldnt scroll thru the programs list without using my fingernail.

Posted by: tycorp

Even with a screen protector, i have no problem using my finger (no nail required)

only time i have used my nail is (on and off) selecting a "right click menu option"

Panning and scrolling smooth.

with all the discussion about the supplied tom tom software, I think it all depends on which region the tytn 11 was officially distributed, in hong kong the tom tom disk is not supplied with the package, but I have the mapking 3D GPS software that I got free with the HTC P3600i, i'll be exchanging the P3600i to the tytn2 today, so hopefully it should work, since the map and software has not been registered yet.

also the GPS is one of the highlights of the tytn2, so I doubt it will be disabled (especially the unbranded/unlocked version), all you need is is the GPS software to get it working.

This something I have yet to figure out myself. I loaded TomTom but I cant get it to download the ONE city map it lets you use for free. Guess you have to buy TomTom to get full use. So still trying to figure out GPS.

Set TomTom to com4 and 4800 baud.

Do not change the settings in the Settings -> External GPS!!

You can test your GPS and get a quick fix to help TomTom along if you run GpsViewer first. Find it here:
http://pocketmap.com/accessories/GpsViewer.exe

Set it to com4, press 'Open GPS' and any of the Start buttons you like. I get a fix in 5 - 10 seconds and that is inside. Of course reception is better outside.
This is also really useful for getting the GPS up before running GoogleMaps.

Cheers.

Guys,

I got a question as far as warranty on the Tytn II (unlocked) version. If I wind up buying the unlocked version from a site, what kind of warranty do I get?

I'm currently with Verizon but thinking of switching to AT&T to get the TYTN. Currently with VZW, I pay the $5.99 fee that covers me for any warranty issues.

You could go with a 3rd party insurance. There are plenty out there.

Posted by: kms-lai

buy insurance or return it to the seller, some seller will provide a back up service, if not there is no warranty.

Ahhh, talking insurance always kills the conversation.

Probably the most detailed review (benchmarks, etc.) of the TyTN II here: http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/art...dont_paginate,1

From the Conclusions: "The most astonishing thing to me is that I cannot really find something substantial here that would cause me to ditch this phone for an upgrade, and for the first time I see myself possibly using the same phone for a prolonged period of time"

nice read. i agree, i cant see anything on the horizon that says the kaiser will be only with me for a year like my 8525.

Posted by: likegadgets

I would like to know buying experiences from mail order vendors other than mobile planet - as they charge sales tax in CA.

How to tell if I am getting one with US Warranty and Tom Tom included?

Thanks in advance

Posted by: kms-lai

just email or phone them and ask all the question you need to know, it's much safer if you email, so you have a record as backup, if the description does not match.

thats the sense i get with this phone
that i could use it for a very long time with no real need to switch
other than my ability to be distracted by new shiny things.

which completely helps rationalize the unlocked price.

Do you consider Mobile Planet a US warranty?

I do not know if mobile planet has US Warranty or not. I was asking if anyone offers it or if HTC does.

Hey there - to those of you using the unlocked version - does the TyTn II come with TouchFlo? That would seal it for me....thanks!

Posted by: y2whisper

touchflow = yes...no cube like the touch but there are 3rd party ones

Posted by: adamzeit

Thanks y2Whisper....since I am not familiar with TouchFlo per-say, does the lack of "Cube" mean I can't use my finger to 'flick' and 'swipe' up and down through web pages, email lists, etc.? This is the one thing that appeals to me the most.

Thanks in advance.

its funny, when i got my 8525, i thought i would be buying a backup 8525 as a backup because i really love the device and i thought to myself that this was the end all device. boy was i wrong!!! the reason though i think different because the kaiser incorporates two featres which i 'feel' i am missing
more memeory
gps
i have done the vp rom update so i am going to wait for the price to drop on the kaiser and the first batch gets done and over with and i think i am going to go a with a kaiser instead of the 8925

Posted by: masaki

I bought my Kaiser from a local store (PM me if you wanna know the store but I'm not gonna post it here.) here in Calgary late yesterday afternoon. This phone is great. It's so much more responsive than my other ppc phones. The camera is nice as well though I rarely use phone cameras. I loaded all the apps I use (same on the UTStarcom 6700 but the phone crawls) and it's still blazingly fast. I'm very impressed with this phone and glad I bought it.

<RANT>
On a side note. the store I bought it from dropped the Kaiser price from 1049.99 to 974.99. I called but was told there was no price guarantee. I haven't even had the phone for 24hrs. I was going to buy 3 more Kaisers for my friends this morning which was why I went back to check the store's website. The person told me they couldn't give me a price difference but maybe give me some money off at my next purchase. I declined.

So, as far as TouchFLO goes, there's a nice demo of the "cube" here: http://www.htc.com/product/03-product_htctouch.htm

From what I can gather from all the buzz, the Tilt will have some features of TouchFLO (flicks and wipes) without the "cube." I suppose thats to make the HTC Touch specialer.

In any case, I guess I can hope for some WM genius to figure out how to get the cube on my Tilt someday.

Yes it can do that as it's incorporated throughout the system. The cube is more like a shortcut to quickly pull up media, favourites, etc.

the cube menu is already available, but it's not the official one, my friend has it on the o2 atom life, and is rather nasty, well crap.

Posted by: kms-lai

how come many ppl have reported that the tytn 2 are selling like over USD 1000, in hong kong the official price is like USD 795, but i got mine fot USD 750 unbranded with a very cheap service plan.

BTW just purchase a 6GB micro sd for my tytn 2 today from ebay, although expensive, since it's not available in hong kong yet, so I hope it works.

Posted by: y2whisper

yeah the cube isn't the greatest thing by far the home screen overall is enough for me, if you get the cube now it isn't as swift as the touch (from what i hear) but it exists,

all other touch-flow features (i.e. flicking and scrolling) do exist on the official level (no add ons needed, also is talked about in the instruction manual)

Posted by: adamzeit

Great - thanks for the answers y2whisper, JwY and drokkon. Mine is "out for delivery" with UPS right now.....!!! More Q's to follow if I get stuck - thanks!

Posted by: y2whisper

not a problem, welcome to the club

Posted by: drokkon

So let's see if I've got a handle on this. There are 3 possible "home" screens:

1) HTC Touch Home (on the Touch)
2) HTC Home (on the HTC Kaiser/Tilt)
3) WM6 (on the AT&T Tilt)

The difference between 1 and 2 are minor. If you watch the demo at http://www.htc.com/product/03-product_htctouch.htm, then you're actually seeing some TouchFLO features that are on the Tilt (scrolling through contacts/internet) and some that are not (the cube, returning to the cube by swiping up from the logo, etc.)

A closer look at the standard HTC Home (click "interactive elearning" on this page: http://www.htc.com/product/03-product_tytn_II.htm) reveals that the only extra icons it has aren't on HTC Touch Home because you access them through the cube interface.

So - if that's the only difference between the HTC Homes and the cube doesn't work too well on the Tilt anyway, I'd be happy with the standard HTC Home.

Now for the big question - what makes 2 so much better than 3? If I get the Tilt, should I install the HTC Home screen instead of the WM6 Home screen? Where can I learn more about the standard WM6 Home screen?

Just got my Tytn2. Very nice phone. Couple of questions.

1. I have a hard time reading the screen out in bright daylight. Anything I can do about that? I just have all the default settings right now.

2. How do i change it from celsius to Fareheit on the weather section of the home screen?

Thanks

Posted by: masaki

BrunoD,

1. There's not much you can do but to try covering up the screen so sunlight doesn't bounce off it. Sometimes shutting off the backlight helps a bit in daylight.

2. Tap on the City label, when you're in the dialog for choosing your city/country, tap on the bottom right "Menu" then "Weather Options". In there you can select Fahrenheit.

You could try turning up the brightness.

push the button with the mail icon, and just insert all the detail, you can also try auto setup.

it only takes a few seconds to set up

will that be push email or will it just check every so many minutes?

I hae ATT. I had my tytnII do the automatic setup for ATT. Everything worked fine but I could not send or receive mms. Someone told me it was because I was on an iphone data plan. I switched the plan to unlimited media Net. Still no mms. Anyone know why this is. Could it be a wrong setting used in the auto setup? I switched my sim to my motorola v3xx. It sent an mms on that phone just fine.

I have automatic Netwrk Wizard on my 8525...never had a problem sending out MMS...hard reset your TyTn II and try again...if not...change SIM cards....if all else fails...you might have to send the TyTn II in for repair...

I just tried Remote Desktop on my TyTn II (Kaiser) to connect to my office like I used to do on my Treo 700W and it connects to the login screen fine but when I put the password in I can't type the "s". It takes all the other keys and the "s" works fine in all other situations.

Anybody else have this odd behavior with Remote Desktop?

Been playing with the 8925 for about 4 days now.

Having recently Sold my 8525, it fills a void for me. I miss the superior browsing vs. my Treo 750. The build is really nice and I like the slider a lot more. The tilt is useless! The GPS is ok but getting it jump started is a bit of a pain.
It is very heavy...much more than the 750 and slightly more than the 8525.

At this point my 750 is still my workhorse!

anyone know if this phone will work with Bell Canada or is it just planned for Rogers?

If Bell Canada is GSM, it should work as the Kaiser is an unlocked GSM device.

I can't comment on how the browsing compares with the Treo 750 (this is my first browsing-capable cell phone/PDA), but I have to tell you that I *LOVE* the tilt! Sitting at a table in a coffee shop, browsing the internet, if it weren't for the tilt, I'd have to prop up the back of the unit to be able to see the screen clearly, and then the keyboard would no longer be sitting on a solid surface. GPS works perfectly with TomTom 6. If you're outside, you turn it on, tap "I agree," and in 30 seconds or less you're connected. If you know where you want to go, you don't even have to wait for GPS to be connected; the trip planning can be done without a connection, and by the time you've done that GPS has connected.

As for whether it's too heavy, that depends on your expectations and what you're used to. It's heavier and bigger than the no-frills Sony Ericsson cell phone that I have, but smaller and lighter than my Sony Clie N73 (which is just a PDA--no phone, no Wi-Fi, no GPS). I'd say the tradoff is worth it.

Have had my tytn II about 2 weeks and love it. Mine didn't come with the TomTom starter app, so I order the app and maps, loaded it on, and it seemed to work. But over the next two days the device began freezing, needing to have the battery removed to reboot (the power switch wouldn't even work). So I de-installed TomTom and now the phone works great again.
Anyone else install the full tomtom app? Experiences?

I've had TomTom 6 with the North American maps installed about a week ago. (Mine didn't have the starter software.) No problems so far.

I run TomTom 6.03 on my Kaiser with USA and Canada map 665.1293 (About 900MB) without any problem.

Where and how much is everybody getting and paying for the tomtom 6?

No, it won't work with Bell. I've been with Bell for many years, but had to switch to Fido when I got the Kaiser - no regrets so far

I make appointments for people that call me on my Kaiser. Is there software or a hack or procedure that will give me a way to pop to the calendar and make an appointment whilst talking on the phone?

I find it tedious to try and find an open appoinment with someone still on the line. Is there program that will put a choice, while on the phone call, on the screen to go to calendar?

If its something obvious please be kind..

I still am not a fan of the silver / chrome d-pad plus dark case.

Posted by: neotekz

is there a version of the tytn 2 that comes with gps navigation software or is that always seperate?

Posted by: y2whisper

its not that hard to hit the calendar, just hit the windows button and go over to it on the list

The TyTN II comes with navigation built-in. Now, some carriers may disable it, but no one has officially done that yet. So, all currently available ones have it built in.

As for the TomTom software, it seems some shipped without it. But most came with it, as mine did. But you don't need the software to use the GPS. It works with Google Maps or Live Search, or any other GPS program pretty much out of the box. Honestly, the TomTom software is cool, but you need to d/l maps for it, so you have to pay to do anything with it anyways. (It allows 1 free map d/l, but in the US, that's essentially useless.)

I talked to the guy at my local AT&T store last week and he said the GPS would be crippled(my word) - you have to use the Telenav service. $10 a month for unlimited usage.

so it usually has tomtom just without maps? i have tomtom navigator 5 and the maps for it so i can just use those maps or do i have to get the new navigator 6 maps.

that;s still pretty good that it comes with the core program, i think the maps cost half as much as the full program maybe cheaper on ebay.

anyone know if you can use the gps recieve on the phone as a bluetooth or wired reciever and connect it to a laptop?

it also makes sense that some carriers will disable the gps function if they offer gps service but for my i would rather just buy an unlocked phone than getting one with ATT with the recieve disabled like that.

I'm pretty sure you can't use TomTom5 maps with TomTom6. Getting TomTom to let you activate the maps are unlikely. I've had horrible experience with TomTom with activations. Last I checked they only allow you to activate on 2 devices (not at the same time however. It's when you upgrade to a different PDA). I paid $170 + tax for my TomTom 6 DVD.

Try Franson GPSGate hxxp://www.franson.com/gpsgate/ It allows you to share your GPS data among other devices through Com/BT ports. I haven't tried it on my Kaiser but I have had good success with my iPAQ4700.

i thought it was u can't activate twice using the website, you just have to call tomtom support for the 3rd, 4th...ect. activations

i think i'll just use Nav. 5, can't justify spending another 170 after getting the kaiser

Just assign the calendar to one of the buttons.

I know several people have mentioned briefly that the GPS works well (those that got it working) I'm wondering if anyone could post a proper review of the GPS feature, does it compare with a standalone GPS device, does it get a good signal in a car, indoors, downtown metropolis city with scyscrapers, or do you need to be in a field to get a decent signal. I've read through a half dozen full reviews of the phone and GPS is always mentioned but never reviewed.
Also will this phone do voice navigation through the speaker (as in turn by turn voice instructions) I know this feature is disabled on the Nokia N95 unless you pay a subscription fee.
The answer to my last question is most likely that this is software dependent, but I just want some feedback from current users.

Next question, with my HTC wizard, the default media player had trouble playing quite a few video formats, I'm guessing that it was limited in installed video codecs, I'm wondering if the current version of WMplayer mobile is as fussy. I had to install a 3rd party app to play some videos, and even that was limited in functionality.

Last question, playlists. I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to make playlists, so every time I wanted to listen to mp3's I would have to open the media player, then open up a new list and add the songs I wanted to listen to. Anyone know of a way to make playlists for the Kaiser?

Thanks in advance, the last 13 pages have been repeating the same 4-5 questions and answers, hopefully this will revive the thread and get people actually talking about features on the phone. It took me forever to read this thread to make sure my answer wasn't already in here.

Well I haven't actually received my TyTn II yet (just ordered it yesterday and it is due to be delivered today Thanks Mad Monkey Boy!). A friend has it and using the TomTom software it does offer voice turn by turn navigation.
As far as Playlist stuff try these ....

I have used the editor for a year or so and it works. I have never used the sync.

Anyone have recommendations for a good T9 touch pad? The phone is great when the keyboard is open, but I would really like to reply to quick SMS messages without opening. Interested in findign something that I can use with one hand with the phone closed - large keys (no need to use the stylus).

I've found that when I'm listening to my voicemail on the speakerphone, it produces a really noticible buzzing as people talk... does this happen on everybody's Kaiser?

I talked about it here a bit:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...03&page=1&pp=15
In summary, it's among the best built-in GPS devices at the moment. I don't have a standalone car unit to compare, but the assist makes it lock almost as fast as SiRFIII.

Voice is dependent on the software like you said. I also prefer TomTom and GPS in general on the Kaiser to the one on the N95.

Just stick to TCPMP or Coreplayer as they really bother with adding more codecs on WMPlayer.

Posted by: DubDub

Here is what I think is one of the best GPS information sites around. Maybe even too much information.

http://gpsinformation.net/

Posted by: 66NICKS

Hi tks for the quick replies.
I was using TCPMP, I'll try coreplayer as I haven't tried it yet.
The playlist editors mentioned look like they'll do the job perfectly, and I'm happy to hear that the GPS is top notch for a mobile device. Look forward to getting my Kaiser, even though I'm sad to hear it doesn't have stereo speakers like the N95 or the Wizard, I'll miss that feature.

I have bought my tytn II from Hong Kong and it is english version, my question is that how do I change the time to 12 hours format?? I have tried to change the regional setting to h:mm but still showing as 24 hours. Another thing is that everytime I reboot my phone, the phone will not be able to recognize my carrier, since my phone is bought from HK and they only have some preloaded asia carrier on it, I am actually living in the US so is there any way for me to update that list??

It should be in regional settings for the 12 hour format. You may need to hit one of the arrow keys to scroll down. A bunch of people have missed that.

If I purchase an AT&T Tilt at full price in a retail store (no contract extension or phone plan), will this phone be formally associated with my account? That is, can I use my existing SIM card with the Tilt without alerting AT&T?
