Unlocked phone & network select?

Does an sim-unlocked iPhone always show the network select and EDGE settings icons, or only when you aren't on an ATT network? I have two different ATT towers in my location and would like to be able to switch between them, but I'm not getting the network select icon... one tower is much stronger and I'd like to use it preferentially.

I have the same issue - there is a much stronger CellOne tower in my area, and it prefers the ATT tower. Being able to do a manual network select would be a huge plus for me.

The Network select option and EDGE menu shows up when you are not on AT&T sim card only...
plus the only choice you will have is AT&T and T-Mobile on the network select menu...

I've never seen any stock handset have an ability to select between towers. Carrier networks, yes. But not towers.
What handset have you used that allows you to select towers?
